Name: _____________________Dependent Clauses
A dependent clause is a part of a sentence that has a subject and a predicate, but is not a complete idea. Since it isn’t a complete idea, a dependent clause can’t be written on its own. It needs to be attached to an independent clause, which is a sentence that can stand on its own. Dependent clauses also usually begin with a starter word, like since, after, before, during, while, although, even though, or because. (I used a dependent clause in this paragraph. Underline it!) |------dependent------| |___________independent_____________|Example: After I went to lunch, I played with my friends on the playground.

Simple, Compound, and Complex SentencesSimple sentences are the most basic kinds of sentences. They have one idea, one subject, and one predicate. Ex: I like to eat at Arby’s.
Compound sentences combine two simple sentences using a comma-conjunction pair. Ex: I like to eat at Arby’s, but I also like to eat at Denny’s.
Complex sentences have a dependent clause that is linked to an independent clause. Ex: After I eat at Arby’s, I like to go to Denny’s.
