Safety Instr ucti ons 7
Safety Inst ruct ionsUse the following safety guidelines to help protect yourself and yourcomputer. For comfort and efficiency, observe t he ergonomic guidelines in"Sitt ing Comfortably at Your Computer" in the Tell Me How help file.
When Using Your Computer
CAUTION: Do not operat e your port able computer f or an ext endedperiod of time with the base resting directly on your body. Withext ended operat ion, heat can potent iall y buil d up in t he base. All owing sust ained contact wit h t he ski n could cause discomfortor, event ually, a burn.
Do not attempt to service the computer yourself. Always followinstallation instructions closely.
Do not carry a battery in your pocket, purse, or other container wheremetal objects (such as car keys) could short-circuit the battery
terminals. The result ing excessive current flow can cause extremelyhigh temperatures and may result in damage from burns.
Be sure that nothing rests on your AC adapters power cable and thatthe cable is not located where it can be tripped over or stepped on.
Place the AC adapter in a ventilated area, such as a desk top or on thefloor, when you use it t o run the comput er or to charge the battery. Donot cover the AC adapter with papers or other items t hat will reducecooling; also, do not use the AC adapt er while it is inside a carryingcase.
Do n ot use your comput er in a wet environmen t, for example, near abath tub, sink, or swimming pool or in a wet basement.
Do not push objects into air vents or openings of your computer.Doing so can cause fire or electric shock by short ing out interiorcomponents.
Use only the AC adapter and batteries that are approved for use withthis computer as indicated in this document. Use of another type of battery or AC adapter may risk fire or explosion.

o m Before you connect the comput er to a power source, ensure that t he
voltage rating of the AC adapter matches that of the available powersource:
115 V/60 Hz in most of North and South America and some FarEastern count ries such as Sout h Korea and Taiwan
100 V/50 Hz in eastern Japan and 100 V/60 Hz in western Japan
230 V/50 Hz in most of Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East
To help prevent electric shock, plug the AC adapter and external
device power cables into properly grounded power sources. Thesecables are equipped with 3-prong plugs to help ensure propergrounding. Do not use adapter plugs or remove the grounding prongfrom a cable. If you must use an extension cable, use a 3-wire cablewith properly grounded plugs.
If you use an extension cable with your AC adapter, ensure that thetotal ampere rating of the products plugged in t o the extension cable
does not exceed t he ampere rating of the extension cable. To remove power from the computer, turn it off, remove the battery,
and disconnect the AC adapter from the electrical out let.
If your computer includes an int egrated or optional (PC C ard)modem, disconnect t he modem cable during an electrical storm toavoid the remot e risk of electric shock from light ning via th e telephoneline.
To help avoid the potential hazard of electric shock, do not connect ordisconnect any cables or perform maintenance or reconfiguration of th is product during an electrical storm.
PC C ards may become very warm during normal operation. Use carewhen removing PC C ards after their continuous operation.
Do not dispose of batteries in a fire. They may explode. Check withlocal authorities for disposal instructions.
When setting up the computer for work, place it on a level surface.
W hen t raveling, do not check the comput er as baggage. You can putyour comput er th rough an X-ray security machine, but never put yourcomputer th rough a m etal detector. If you have the comput er checkedby hand, be sure to h ave a charged bat tery available in case you areasked to t urn on the comput er.

When traveling with the hard drive removed from the computer, wrapthe drive in a nonconduct ing material, such as cloth or paper. If youhave the drive checked by hand, be ready to install the drive in thecomputer. You can put the hard drive through an X-ray securitymachine, but never put the drive through a met al detector.
W hen t raveling, do not place the computer in overhead storagecompartments where it could slide around. Do not drop yourcomputer or subject it to ot her mechanical shocks.
Protect your computer, batt ery, and hard drive from environment alhazards such as dirt, dust, food, liquids, temperature extremes, andoverexposure to sunlight.
W hen you m ove your comput er between environments with verydifferent temperature and/or humidity ranges, condensation may formon or within the computer. To avoid damaging the computer, allowsufficient time for the moisture to evaporate before using thecomputer.
NOTI CE: When taking the computer from low-temperature conditions into awarmer environment or from high-temperature conditions into a coolerenvironment, allow the computer to acclimate to room temperature beforeturning on power.
W hen you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. As you pull out the connector, keepit evenly aligned to avoid bend ing any connector pins. Also, before you
connect a cable make sure both connectors are correctly oriented andaligned.
Handle component s with care. Hold a component such as a memorymodule by its edges, not its pins.
W hen removing a memory module from the system board ordisconnecting an external device from the computer, wait 5 secondsafter turning off the comput er before removing the memory module or
disconnecting the device to help avoid possible damage to the systemboard.
Before you clean your comput er, tu rn it off, unplug it from its powersource, and remove the batt ery.
