URBANISATION IN THE MODERN ERA
The year 1911 changed the course of Indian history. The many protest movements led by Bengalis , the MohunBagan Victory and an inclination towards Ancient Indian Culture led to the shift of the British capital from Calcuttato Delhi. A Mughal city was transformed into a modern Capital with an English touch by the talented architect Edwin Lutyens.

Delhi , being the capital city, offers an extremely smooth transport network. The history of modern transport in Delhi can be traced back to the days of Raj. Much before the Mutiny of 1857 , the imperial servants commissionedVictorian buggies which ran between the Company bunglows and residencies.The Delhi Junction is the oldest railway station in Delhi . It was established in 1864 with a single broad gauge train from calcutta.

textiles to European clothes and a
short phase of Swadeshi clothes.
Later it was influenced by the
migrants and now Delhi offers a
wide selection of clothes .The
urban teens are Contributing to
the fashion world everyday.

Developments in art : 1857 to 20001) After the decline of royal patronage for miniature Paintings , Delhi became an important centre for theproduction of Company paintings.2) Many craftsmen from all over the country migrated to Delhi in search for jobs after the Princely states signed The Instrument of Accession. Realizing the importanceof our traditional arts, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay foundedthe Crafts Council of India.3) The National Gallery of Modern Art was founded in orderto preserve works of art from the contemporary era and recent past. The museum is housed in the grand Jaipur House, designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield, as a residence for the Maharaja of Jaipur .

•Delhi has extremely clean and smooth roadslined with trees on the sides. Lutyen’s Delhi isthe cleanest part with patches of green allaround.
•Old Delhi is comparatively dirty and houses a large number of slums with unhealthyenvironment . This area is congested and polluted.Yamuna pollution is another majorthreat to the residents.
