Bachelor of Visual Art TheBachelorofVisualArt(BVA)isathreeyeardegreeprogram,designedtoequipstudentswiththeskillsandknowledgetodevelopcareersaspractisingartists.Afocusonthefundamentalart-makingpracticesofdrawing,paintingandsculptureiscomplementedbyanemphasisonarthistoryandtheory,conceptualdevelopment,andprofessionalpractice.AtLevel3studentsaresupportedtodevelopacoherentbodyofworkbasedoncomprehensive,self-directed,studioresearch.

OncompletionoftheBVA,graduatesareequippedtodevelopanindependentstudiopracticeandpursueacareerasaprofessionalpractisingartist.Graduatesarealsowellpositionedtoundertakefurtherstudyorpursueemploymentopportunitiesinrelatedfields.TheBVAprovidesapathwaytopost-graduatestudy.Associate Degree of Visual ArtTheAssociateDegreeofVisualArt(ADVA)isatwoyearentrylevelprogramfocusedonbuildingfoundationskillsinkeyaspectsofvisualart.ThecoursecomprisesLevel1and2oftheBachelorofVisualArt(BVA)andincludesunitsindrawing,painting,sculpture,arthistoryandtheory,andcontemporarystudies.

TheADVAoffersanexitpointfromtheBVA,enablingstudentswhohavecompletedLevel1and2tograduatewithastand-alonequalification.OncompletionoftheADVA,graduatesareequippedtopursueemploymentopportunitiesinthefieldofvisualartsandinrelatedoccupations,orundertakefurtherstudy.

General Drawing 1

GeneralDrawing1isastructuredandcomprehensiveunitdesignedforthosewhohaveneverstudiedatatertiarylevelbefore.Startingwithbasicskillsindrawingbyobservation,theunitintroducesthestudenttodifferentwaysofseeing.Formandstructure,conceptdevelopment,expressionandcommunicationareexploredinthesecondsemester.

General Drawing 2

GeneralDrawing2furtherdevelopsstudents’awarenessofdrawingasacommunicativevisuallanguage.Studentsareintroducedtoincreasinglysophisticatednotionsofdrawinganddevelopabreadthanddepthofskills,processesandconceptualunderstanding.Drawing 3

Drawing3exploresthediversityofcontemporarydrawingpracticeandisdeliveredbyaselectionofexpertpractitioners.Drawing3projectsmightencompasscross-disciplinaryinvestigationsoftheconventionsofdrawinginrelationtootherdisciplines,suchaspainting,performance,three-dimensionalpractices,time-baseddocumentationandprint.Throughsetprojectbriefs,studentsdevelopanunderstandingofdrawingasinvestigativepracticeandstrategiesfortheexplorationofthepotentialandlimitsofdrawingconventions.

Life Drawing 1

LifeDrawing1providesstudentswiththeessentialfoundationalskillsfortherepresentationofthehumanformthroughdrawing.Whilethebasisofthecourseislargelydrawingfromdirectobservation,considerationisalsogiventothestudyofanatomy,conceptsofformandstructureandthecommunicativeandexpressivepossibilitiesoffigurativedrawing.

Life Drawing 2

InLifeDrawing2,studentsdevelopanincreasedunderstandingofthevariousformal,materialandconceptualconsiderationspertinenttodrawingthehumanfigure.Drawingisusedasaninvestigativetoolinrelationtosystemsofrepresentation,meaningandcommunication,semiotics,narrativeandexpression.

Sculpture 1

Arigorousandcomprehensiveintroductiontothree-dimensionalthinking.UnlikeotherLevel1units,thesesemester-longunitscanbedoneineitherorder.InSculpture1:1studentsbecomefamiliarwiththemateriallanguageofclayandtheskillsassociatedwithmodelling,mould-makingandcasting.Sculpture1:2introducesstudentstoawiderrangeofmaterialsandobjects,exploringtheirpoeticandcommunicativepossibilitiesthroughaseriesofexcitingandchallengingprojects.

Sculpture 2Level2Sculptureunitsareofferedaselectiveswithintheawardstructure.ThefollowingunitscanbeundertakeninanyorderorcombinationbystudentswhohavesuccessfullycompletedSculpture1:

• The Multiple in 3D Space Thisunitisspecificallyconcernedwiththedevelopmentofthree-dimensionalartworksconsistingofmultipleelements.Projectsaddressboththespatialdynamicsofmultipleelementartworksaswellastechniquesandprocessespertinenttothefield,suchasmould-making,castingandpattern-making.

• InstallationThisunitconsidersthewaysinwhichartistsmakeimmersiveexperiences,collaboratewithparticipatingaudiencesandworkinresponsetoarchitectures,socialsituationsandplaces.Studentsareofferedtheopportunitytodevelopcriticalawarenessofthefieldofsculptureandinstallation,andtodeveloptheseconsiderationsascomponentsoftheirpractice.

• Video and Performance Thisunitprovidesanintroductiontoartistspractisingintheseareas,basictheories,anddiscussionsrelevanttothefield.Theunitcoversrudimentaryvideoandaudiorecording,editingandpresentation,andencouragesstudentstodeveloptheirownpersonalandcontextualrelationshipswiththesewaysofmaking.

• Objects and InventionThisunitinvitesstudentstothinkaboutarangeofstructures,spacesandobjectsrelatingtothehumanbody(suchasarchitecture,furnitureandclothing)andinvestigateshowsuchobjectsmightbemeaningfullyutilisedwithinthree-dimensionalvisualartpractice.Theutilitarianmotivationsofdesign,architectureandrelatedfieldsareconsideredalongsidethemorepoeticorcommunicativeintentionsthatdrivecontemporaryspatialpractices.

Painting 1

Thisisafoundationcourseinthebasicskillsandconceptsofpainting.Studentswillreceivetrainingintheuseoftools,materials,techniquesandcolourtheory,aswellasgainanunderstandingoftheideasunderlyingcommonapproachestopainting.Oncethebasictechniquesareacquired,studentsareintroducedtothedevelopmentofideasandconceptualapproachestopainting.

ContemporaryStudioPractice2alsointroducesstudentstoprofessionalbusinesspracticesandprovidesstudentswithbasicskillstopursuecareersasself-employedartists.ThisprovidesafoundationforanexpandedprogramatLevel3,deliveredthroughProfessionalStudies.

Professional Studies 3

ProfessionalStudiesprovidesstudentswithaworkingknowledgeofprofessionalbusinesspracticesandequipsstudentswiththeskillstoembarkoncareersasself-employedartists.Studentswillgainacriticalunderstandingoftheindustryatalocalandnationallevelthroughparticipationinseminarswithindustryprofessionalsandvisitstovariousartsorganisations.Thecoursewillprovidestudentswithimportantstrategiesforgeneratingandsustainingaprofessionalpractice.

Studio Practice 3

Insemester1,studentsareintroducedtoanexploratoryapproachtoideas,materialsandprocesseswithinagroupfacilitationmodel,extendingthestrategiesestablishedintheirpreviouscoursework.Studentsdevelopaproposalforthestudioprojecttobeundertakeninsemester2.Insemester2,studentsworkundertheguidanceofasupervisor,developingtheirmajorstudioprojectintoaresolvedbodyofworkforpresentationtoapanelofexaminers.ItmustbeundertakeninconjunctionwithArtHistory&Theory3.

Art History & Theory 1

Thefirstyearintroducesstudentstoarangeofwaysofstudyingandwritingaboutartusingdifferentmethodologies,followedbyasurveyofchangesinartpracticedatingfromancientcivilisationstothelatenineteenthcentury.Thesurveycoversselectedcasestudiestodemonstratehowworksofartarerelatedtotheirparticularculturalcontexts.

Art History & Theory 2

Thefirstsemesterexaminestheconcepts,sourcesandmanifestationsofModernisminthevisualartswithafocusontheearlytomid-twentiethcentury.ThesecondsemesterbeginswithanexplorationofthediversityofhistoricalandcontemporaryAustralianIndigenousartpracticeaswellaskeyissuesthatarisefromthecreationandreceptionofIndigenousart.Thefinaltermprovidesanintroductiontosomeseminalideasfromwesternphilosophythathavehelpedshapemorerecentculturaltheory.

Art History & Theory 3

Thethirdyearsurveyscontemporaryartcurrents,withtheworkofAustralianandinternationalleadingcontemporaryartistsandtheoristsexaminedindepth.Assignmentsaredirectedtowardsstudentsinvestigatingtheirindividualresearchfocusesinordertocontextualisetheirownartpracticewithinthefieldofcontemporaryart.ItmustbeundertakeninconjunctionwithStudioPractice3.

Painting 2

Level2Paintingunitsareofferedaselectiveswithintheawardstructure.UnitsinthefollowingsubjectareascanbeundertakeninanyorderorcombinationbystudentswhohavesuccessfullycompletedPainting1:

• Tonal Realism StudentsofTonalRealismwillgainthenecessaryskillsrequiredforanadvancedlevelofrepresentationalpainting.Theywillinvestigatethetechniquesofmasterpaintersandstudythecompositionalandconstructiveelementsusedtocreateamajorwork.

• Non-Representational Painting Thiselectiveintroducesstudentstoformalelementsofpainting,suchascolour,tone,lineandcomposition.Studentsinvestigateexperimentalpaintingprocesseswhichuseformalelementstoconstructmeaning.

• Life Painting Duringthisunit,studentswillgaintheskillsandtechniquesrequiredbyartistswhenworkingfromthefigure.Workingwithalifemodel,studentswillinvestigatethematerials,methods,techniquesandconceptsoflifepainting.

Painting 3

ThefocusofPainting3iscriticalandformaldevelopment.Throughrigorousstudiopracticeandaccompanyinglecturesandtutorials,studentswillexplorethepossibilitiesandrealitiesofpainting.Ideasgroundedwithinthetraditionofpaintingareexchanged,challengedandrefined.Themainobjectiveofthiscourseistodevelopdirection,purposeandthecriticalthinkingskillsnecessaryforapainting-basedstudiopractice.

Foundation Studies 1

FoundationStudiesaimstofacilitateabroadunderstandingoftheconceptualandvisuallanguagesinherentinthevisualarts.Thisunitequipsstudentswithanexpansiverangeoftechniques,strategiesandapproachestothemakingandthinkingprocessandencompassesawiderangeofdisciplinesandmedia.Studentsareencouragedtobroadentheirapproachestomakingthroughself-directedprojects,experimentingacrossmediaandengaginginclassdiscussions.

Contemporary Studio Practice 2

ContemporaryStudioPractice2enablesandchallengesstudentstoworkonarangeofbriefs,creatingaseriesofpropositionaloutcomesreflectingtheirpassionsandinterests.

Studentsareencouragedtoexperimentandtakeriskswithinsmallpeergroupsfacilitatedbyalecturer,andworkacrossarangeofdisciplinesandmedia,documentingtheirprocessesandoutcomes.

Application ProceduresApplicantsshouldsubmittheapplicationformwithcertifiedcopiesofrelevantdocumentationandtheexhibitionreviewbytheapplicationclosingdate.

Portfoliointerviewswillbeconductedfornon-academicentrantsafterwhichallsuccessfulapplicantswillbesentaletterofofferandenrolmentpack.

Formalenrolmentandfeearrangementsarethenrequiredbytheenrolmentduedate.

Admission RequirementsAdelaideCentralSchoolofArtfollowstheAustralianQualificationsFrameworkguidelinesforadmissionpoliciesandproceduresfortheAssociateDegreeofVisualArt,BachelorofVisualArt,andBachelorofVisualArt(Hons).Academicandnon-academicfactorsareconsideredwhenassessingapplicationsforAwardcourses.

Academic Entry Requirements SatisfactorycompletionoftheSouthAustralianCertificateofEducation(SACE)withaminimumATARscoreof60(orequivalent)ORcompletionoftheInternationalBaccalaureateDiplomaORahighereducationqualificationinanyarea.Highereducationqualificationsmusthavebeenawardedwithinthelast10yearsandbeAQFlevel6orabovetofulfiltheacademicentryrequirements.

Non-Academic or Mature-Age Entry ApplicantswhodonotmeettheSchool’sacademicentryrequirementscanapplythroughthenon-academicentryprocesswhichincludesaportfoliointerview.

Recognition of Prior Learning ApplicantswhohavealreadyacquiredskillsandknowledgeequivalenttocourseunitsmayapplyforRecognitionforPriorLearning(RPL).RPLapplicationsmustbesubmittedandassessedpriortoenrollinginthecourse.ApplicationformsandguidelinesareavailablefromAdministrationorfromourwebsite.
