Sudanese Liberation Army/Movement
(SLA) This rebel group was founded in
1987.
It opposed the Fur, Masalit, &Zaghawa.
SLA objective: ³To create aunited, democratic Sudan.´
It raided al-Fashir on April 25,2003 which led to the start of theconflict.
Their attack on the city,specifically the governmentgarrison, was due that they wereexasperated by the government¶snegligence towards the ³black,farming´ communities.

Justice for Equality Movement (JEM) The JEM was founded by
Darfuri Muslims loyal toIslamist leader Hassan al-Turabi. (His National IslamicFront part instigated a 1989coup against the president, butfailed.)
They, too, are ³non-Arab,black agrarian´ Muslims.
Even though the ideologydiffer between them & the
SLA, they have decided tocooperate in launching raidsagainst the government.

Janjaweed The Janjaweed militia is
armed & funded by theKhartoum government.
It is composed mainly of ³Arab black African´Muslims who herd cattle &livestock.

usually raid villages after government aircraft bombcertain villages.

Victims Although many factions
are involved in the conflict,there are many moreinnocent civilians who
suffer from such fighting. Most of the victims are
abused, raped, tortured,beaten, & killed by theJanjaweed.
The Janjaweed has evencrossed into Chad, andraided villages, killinginnocent civilians.

About 2.4 MILLION

persons) camps.

The baby on the right is a sadstory of the tragedy in Darfur.
As her mother was returningfrom fetching water, she wentinto premature labor and gave
birth to twins. (Ahok is one of them).
The mother, unfortunately,died the next day.
The next day, supplies camein which included antibiotics,
medicines, and formula for thebaby.
She was hospitialized inNairobi, and was renamed³Naima´, which means ³grace´.
