SHO, 4 cops among dozen injured in clash

POONCH, Dec 20: FivePolice personnel includingStation House Officer Gursaiand about half a dozen other vil-lagers were injured during clashat village Ari in Mendhar SubDivision of district Poonch thisevening.

Official sources said thatclash took place at around 7 pmwhen police party from Gursaialong with Naib Tehsildar(Magistrate) had gone to shiftthe drilling machine mountedon vehicle from Jattan Mohallain Ari to some other location onthe directions of the SubDivisional Magistrate Mendhar.This machine had been held inthe captivity by the locals of thearea demanding that water handpump should also be installed intheir locality. They were notallowing the PHE DrillingDivision to shift the machinefor the last 25 days.

When the police team led bySHO Sanjay Gupta along withMagistrate arrived there at thevillage and tried to shift themachine, the villagers went vio-lent and resorted to stone peltingon police party. The policelobbed 5-6 tear gas shells andalso resorted to lathi-charge onthem. During clash, SHO andfour other cops were injuredwhile about half a dozen villagersincluding two women also sus-tained injuries. The police failedto shift the machine from there.

Village Numberdar, AbdulAziz said that they had beenassured by the MLA to installhand pump in their locality. Onehad already been installed in thenearby locality. They wanted tocomplete drilling work first intheir area before shifting it tosome where else. He said thatpolice tried to shifted it duringnight giving slip to the locals. Healleged that police beaten up thevillagers with lathis and also firedtear gas shells on them. Two girlsand 4-5 five other villagers wereinjured in police action, he added.

The SDPO, Riaz Tantray saidthat villagers attacked policeparty when drilling machine wasbeing shifted from MohallaJattan in Ari. He said the villagershad kept the machine in illegalcustody. The department soughtpolice help and on the directionsof District Administration thepolice was assisting the shiftingoperation. He claimed that SHOGursai, Insp Sanjay Gupta, con-stables -Maqsood Ahmed, MohdNasir, Zaheer Khan and ImtiazAhmed were injured in stone pelt-ing. He said the police will takeaction against the attackers.

3-storey house gutted,people protest

RAJOURI, Dec 20: A threestorey building was completelygutted in Thannamandi area ofdistrict Rajouri today.

Official sources said thatmishap took place in the jointhouse of three brothers, MohdKhursheed, Mohd Fareed and

Mohd Shabir-all sons of MohdAkhtar, residents of Azmatabadvillage. The LPG cylinder in thekitchen was leaked and it caughtfire. Then it got exploded and theflames engulfed the whole build-ing within minutes.

The family members rushedout for the safety but one boyMohd Azhar got trapped inside.He was later rescued by the peo-ple. He received multiple injuriesand was rushed to Thannamandihospital and then to DistrictHospital, Rajouri. It was around11.20 am when the mishap tookplace. The locals rushed to thespot and later Police party led bySDPO Iftikhar Choudhary, SHOand Tehsildar Shahid Iqbal also

reached.The people started pouring

water on the burning buildingbut they failed to contain fire.The Fire tender from Rajouriarrived at around 1.30 pm. Thebuilding had been completelygutted by then. The loss of prop-erty was being assessed but thefamily claimed that it would bearound Rs 50 lakh. Entire prop-erty was gutted in the mishap.

The relatives of the victims,people of the area then held strongprotest at Thannamandi against FireServices authorities for arrivinglate. The people also raised slogansagainst District Administration anddemanded that Fire Station be setup at Thannamnandi. They claimedthat this Sub Division urgentlyneeds Fire Station because in mostof the houses here more than 50%dry timber is used. Later, with theintervention of SDPO andTehsildar the protest was suspendedand the blocked road was restored.

Meanwhile, the DistrictAdministration has providedcash assistance of Rs 1.20 lakh tothe fire victim families besidessome ration, ten blankets, plasticsheets and other eatables.

Andrabi visits various shrines,inspects development worksExcelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 20: Minister ofState for Hajj and Auqaf, PHE,Irrigation & Flood Control,Power, Industries and Commerce,Syed Farooq Ahmad Andrabitoday visited various shrines inand around Jammu city and tookstock of the developmental worksand other facilities available forthe visiting devotees.

These shrines includedZiarat Peer Baba PanjpeerManda, Hazrat Baba Sharaf ud-Din at Tawi bridge and HazratPeer Baba Roshan Shah Wali(RA) Gumat.

The Minister was apprisedabout the facilities being put inplace for the visiting devotees andnew infrastructural facilities beingdeveloped by the department.

He directed for immediatereplacement of damaged lightswith LED lights and installationof stabilizer at Ziarat Peer BabaPanjpeer Manda to ensure unin-

terrupted power supply to theshrine. He also instructed forimmediate renovation of path-way in the premises and main-taining cleanliness in and aroundthe shrine. The Minister askedthe caretakers to take propercare of the Auqaf properties.

At Ziarat Baba Sharaf ud-Din, the Minister asked forimmediate repairs and face-lift-ing of the shrine.

During his visit to HazratPeer Baba Roshan Shah Wali(RA) at Gumat, the Minister wasapprised about the facilitiesavailable for the devotees.

Andrabi also paid obeisanceat these shrines and prayed forpeace, prosperity and welfare ofthe State.

Chief Executive Officer,Auqaf Islamia, Raj Muhammad,Administrator Auqaf IslamiaJammu, Wasim Raja Khan andother senior officers of Auqafaccompanied the Minister dur-ing his tour.

Ramban landslidevictim succumbsExcelsior CorrespondentJAMMU, Dec 20: A man,

who was injured in landslide atRamban on December 3, suc-cumbed to his injuries todayhere at Government MedicalCollege and Hospital (GMCH),Jammu.

According to a police offi-cial, Vidya Ram (30) son ofAbhi Lal, resident ofChanderkote, had received seri-ous injuries in a landslideoccurred on December 3 inRamban district. He said that thevictim was taken to a Rambanhospital for treatment fromwhere he was referred toGMCH Jammu on December 13in view of his serious condition.

“Today at about 6.15 pm,the man succumbed to hisinjuries”, he said, adding, bodyof the deceased was shifted tomortuary room of the hospitalwhile the concerned police hadtaken cognizance.

DB dismissescriminal acquittalappeal, acquits 6

Bench of the State High Courtcomprising Chief Justice BadarDurrez Ahmed and JusticeSanjeev Kumar has dismissedthe criminal acquittal appealfiled by the State against thejudgment delivered by theSessions Judge, Udhampurwhereby all the six accusedwere acquitted in a murder case.

After hearing GovernmentAdvocate Ahatsham Bhatappearing for the State andAdvocate Rahul Raina appear-ing for the six accused, the DBobserved, "after examining thetotality of circumstances andconsidering the argumentsadvanced by the counsel for theparties and also upon goingthrough the evidence in detail,we are of the view that there isno cause for interfering with thejudgment of acquittal renderedby the Trial Court”.

“No perversity has beenpointed out in the manner ofappreciation of evidence by theSessions Court. It is also not thecase that any relevant evidencehas been ignored by the TrialCourt", the DB said while dis-missing the appeal.

Speaker launches workon Water Supply Scheme

JAMMU, Dec 20: SpeakerLegislative Assembly, KavinderGupta today launched works forimprovement of Water SupplyScheme (WSS) Rajeev Nagar,here today. Under the improve-ment works, 450 m pipelineswill be laid at an estimated costof Rs 2.84 lakh.

Speaking on the occasion,the Speaker said that steps areunderway to provide basic facil-ities including water, power sup-ply and proper roads. Heinformed that out of the totalroad span of 842 km in theGandhi Nagar constituency,construction/upgradation worksfor about 600 km roads havebeen completed with specialfocus on quality of the works.

He also informed that twoprojects, each worth Rs 18 crore,have been sanctioned by theCentral Government for Batalaand Bathindi areas to augmentthe water supply in the area.

Kavinder Gupta said that the

demands of the people includingimprovement of drainage sys-tems, adequate water supply,construction of graveyard, sani-tation, construction of nallahsfor flood water drainage arebeing taken up on priority.

He said that with the launch-ing of works for improvement inWSS Rajeev Nagar, the problemof water supply shortage will beresolved. Besides, the works forgraveyard are in pipeline and willbe initiated in the coming days.

He informed that JMC hasbeen directed to take intensivedrive to clean drains, removeblockages in the area, besidesmaintaining adequate sanitation,regular lifting of garbage andremoval of solid waste from drains.

He further said that a projectfor construction of nallahs toaugment the flood waterdrainage network has been sanc-tioned and will be initiated at theearliest, so that people of thearea do not suffer due to season-al flooding.DDC Kupwara reviews status

KUPWARA, Dec 20: DistrictDevelopment CommissionerKupwara Khalid Jahangir todaypaid an extensive tour to variousareas in Handwara and Langateto review the status of on-goingdevelopmental works, undertak-en as the Chief Minister commit-ments.

The areas visited includeNutnussa, Haril, Qalamabad,Sonamulla, Chalpova Bumhama,Ganapora, Swachalyari, Lilam,Dahama, Ashkanpora, Sirajpora,Tarathpora, Cherpova falling inLangate and Handwara.

The District DevelopmentCommissioner directed the PDDto ensure completion of worksunder CM directions expeditingwithin the stipulated time framewhich are being carried out atBumhama, Khan Basti, Nutnussa,Ganapora, Harril, Swuchalyari,Hingni Koot, Dolipora, areas.

He also inspected Sirajpora-Tulwari road and called upon theexecuting agency to completethe work by June 2018. A culvertbeing constructed at Ashkenporawas also inspected. A delegationof local inhabitants demandedconstruction of additional cul-vert near Jamia Masjid Wagathand construction of road toorchards located at Wadoora.

relating to developing works,healthcare and playfield and direc-tions were passed to ExecutiveEngineer PHE to take necessarysteps for resolving difficulties ofinhabitants. The AssistantCommissioner DevelopmentKupwara and concerned BDO weredirected to take up development ofplayground of Ganapora to fulfillthe demands of the young playersand sports lovers of the area.

The DDC also inspected theFirst Aid Centre (FAC) Ganaporato take stock of availability ofstaff medicines and maintenanceof necessary records. The con-cerned were directed to provideall health facilities as per theneeds and requirements of thelocals especially the women.

While taking the stock ofinstallation of LT HT line andchanging of electric polls atHaril, the DDC directed to com-plete the work up to 24thDecember.

HESK played big role in strengtheningeducational infra: Moti Kaul

JAMMU, Dec 20: Tracing thenostalgic journey of HinduEducation Society Kashmir (HESK)since 1943, senior BJP leader, MotiKaul informed that the Society had abig role to play in developing andstrengthening the educational infra-structure in the Valley.

Kaul, who has been electedpresident of HESK said this dur-ing a felicitation function of thenewly elected Executive Body ofHESK, which was attended by alarge number of prominent com-munity members, who expressedtheir collective feelings of joy andhappiness on the composition ofthe Executive Body, having anunblemished tract record.

He said that some philanthrop-ic Kashmiri Pandits at that timehad established the Society tocater to the Higher Educationalneeds of the entire Kashmir val-ley, which had meagre higher edu-

cational opportunities at that time.The speakers on the occasion

informed that the Society estab-lished Hindu College, laterrechristened as GandhiMemorial College Srinagar in1943, with a secular approach inimparting higher education,especially to the deprived sec-tions of the Kashmiri Society.

The speakers unambiguouslyexpressed their confidence in theleadership of Kaul, whosedynamism, integrity and contri-bution to community causes iswell established.

Prof Satesh Bhan GeneralSecretary of the new ExecutiveBody said that Gandhi MemorialCollege Srinagar is the 2nd old-est College in the Valley.

Renowned educationist pres-ent on the occasion recalled thestruggle they had to make in theaftermath of the forced exile, forre-establishing another educa-tional institution namely GandhiMemorial College of EducationJammu under the leadership ofLate General BN Dhar PVSM.

The outgoing president, BLRazdan, Ex-Chief Income TaxCommissioner in his partingremarks expressed his confi-dence that the legacy of theSociety was being handed overto Kaul, who has a dedicatedsocial outreach and a personwidely acclaimed and acceptedby the whole Pandit Community.
