As Regional Accountant at Rocla Quarry I developed valuations models that provided clear insights on profits generation prospects of targeted acquisitions or CAPEX using activity-based-cost drivers that took into account impact of capital-fixed costs, equipment throughput, capacity constraints, maintenance issues, process yields, volume-product mix, pricing, safety issues and extraction yield base on material characteristics as determined by geological factors such as depth of extraction.
As Accounting Manager at Star-Track Express I project managed the implementation of Oracle Financials and was personally involved in developing user requirements; negotiating with, selecting and managing performance of vendors; and in the migration and conversion of five years historical data using Access Database and Excel spreadsheets and VBA programming.
As Financial Manager at Burns Philp (PNG) Business systems division, I proposed two low cost strategic initiatives that transformed a seven-year old business that never made a profit to become the most profitable division in the South-Pacific Regions.

ROCLA QUARRY PRODUCTS (Six Quarries and two Joint-Ventures): Regional Accountant – Dec 02 to Jan 15 Financial management of NSW and Victoria; managed 5 staff member and was responsible for creditors,
debtors, sales, payroll and general ledger and tax related issues. Interaction with Corporate Office on compliance issues, performance reporting, analysis and planning.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS Improved accuracy and timeliness of data capture and reporting-forecast for quarry operations in New
South Wales & Victoria by standardising and changing work-flow. Developed an “Activity-Based Driven” strategic planning and budgeting model for quarry operations and
to provide an enriched context for analysis and understanding business issues to support evidence based decision making.
Developed an accurate Excel valuation model to evaluate acquisitions and major capital projects, and to track capital spending against approvals.
Created a team performance culture and improved the skill base of staff through a combination of internal and external training to improve productivity and support career aspirations of staff.
STAR-TRACK EXPRESS ($300m Sales; 30 branches; 2000 employees): Accounting Manager (1994-2002) Financial Management for the company’s Australia wide operations. Managed staff of 10, and was responsible for creditors, general ledger, statutory and management
accounting, fixed assets tracking, tax compliance and board reporting.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS Used Excel and Access to improve productivity and effectiveness of the finance function, expand coverage
of management reports (5 year comparisons, KPI, Cash-flow reporting) to highlight performance trends, and to speed up the month-end and budget cycles.
Project managed the implementation of Oracle Financials, developing data maps and interfaces for electronic data migration for Oracle implementation and replacing or re-implementing a range of mission critical software (payroll, fixed asset, workshop, warehousing...)
Implemented introduction of GST, and set up processes for fuel rebate claim. Investigated Cost System accrual shortfall of $2 million plus; fixed the problem and in the process
uncovered both fraud and systems deficiencies resulting in annual saving of more than $500,000.

COMMERCIAL LEADERSHIP AND RISK MANAGEMENT:
Turned a seven year loss making operation (Burns Philp) to become the most profitable with ROCE exceeding 60% by identifying strategic initiatives for repair centre and consumable sales.
Managed Treasury operation (Burns Philp) and improved profitability by 40% by used Excel modelling techniques to speed and integrate complex calculations.
Created a valuation model that dealt with a range of complex variables to determine ability of proposed projects/acquisitions to generate profits required for approval (Rocla).
Audited and improved costing system at Star-Track resulting in eliminating $2 million per annum under accrual, and recovery of around $350K from mis-costing and $150K from fraud.
Introduced mark-to-market process at Pembroke Securities to provide valuation of actual exposure to arising from trading in Fixed Interest, Commodities, Bonds and Indexes; uncovering trading losses of $500K from systematic unauthorised trading and over-trading.
Audited incomplete records and generated forensic data to support TPC litigation against third parties.
REPORTING, ANALYSUS AND ACCOUNTING:
Reduced month-end processing and reporting turnaround time by 50%, accuracy by 300%; and general ledger reconciliations turnaround time by 400% through the use of automation and process flow.

PROJECTS MANAGEMENT, PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:
Project managed the implementation of Oracle Financials. Other software implementation included: PICK, warehousing systems, workshop systems, weighbridge system, Chris 21, Catsoft and Access database.
Introduced integrated Profit Forecast Excel models to guide site managers in managing their operations and backup as a tool for data capture.
Involved in implementation of GST and in Y2K reviews. Implemented EDI at Kolotex and EFT at Star-Track Express to making trading processes seamless. Re-engineered Freight Forwarding, Shipping Clearance, Costing and Inventory Control processes at Burns
Philp PNG resulting in reduced freight clearance time by 50%, costing turnaround from three months to three days, error rates from around 80% to 3%, all leading to improved pricing practice.
Re-engineered inventory control at Burns Philp PNG and Kolotex: at the former reduced theft by around $1.1 million per annum, warranty claims by $100K, obsolescence write-off by $200K; at the latter reduced storage space required by 30%, reduced filling errors by 90% and labour cost by around $150K.
PEOPLE LEADERSHIP AND TRAINING:
Created performance supporting culture for immediate processing of documents and zero-error-tolerance using work flow built round tested standardised processes, developing monitoring-review-alert system and devolving problem solving skills at the coalface to fully engage staff in their work.
Trained and mentored staff, improving work performance and resulting in promotions (two at RQP, two at Star-Track and seven at Burns Philp PNG).
