discovering more effective methods of intervention with traumatically-
bereaved individuals. It produced and pilot-tested a structured, 20-week
treatment protocol designed to meet the unique needs of survivors of
traumatic loss by integrating five major theoretical approaches into the
treatment. In 2002, private corporate funding was received to tailor the
protocol, teach it to therapists, and evaluate its efficacy with adults who

the group continued to refine the treatment, which was expanded into a
book published in 2014.

2009 – Present Three-Day Post Critical Incident Seminar (PCIS) for Law Enforcement
Personnel and First Responders – South Carolina, North Carolina, and
Therese A. Rando, Ph.D., BCETS, BCBT (6)
Georgia
Serve as multidisciplinary team thanatologist/psychologist in PCIS
programs in these states. With goals of permitting both recovery from the
traumatic effects of past critical incidents and resilience for future ones,
these intense programs are derived from the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) model operating since 1985. Participants share their
experiences with others currently struggling with similar issues and with
trained peer support members who previously were similarly affected,
thereby receiving support for and normalization of what are construed as
pathological experiences. They are provided psychoeducation about
trauma, loss, and coping strategies to facilitate healing and recovery.
Through large group discussion, small group interaction, and personal one-
on-one consultation with licensed therapists familiar with law enforcement
issues, posttraumatic stress, and the proven trauma recovery method of
EMDR, participants are enabled to process their traumatic stress reactions.
In some states, somatic interventions for stress are also an option.
Spouses/partners of participants are invited to attend and receive similar
services to enable them to understand and support the affected individual
and to mitigate adverse impacts on the relationship.
2016 – Present The Sudden Traumatic Loss Seminar ™ (STLS). Serve as Clinical
Director of multidisciplinary team providing an intensive, four-day
program designed to assist law enforcement and their significant others to
cope with traumatic death. It is based upon the highly successful Post
Critical Incident Seminar (PCIS), which was derived from the Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) model created in 1983 to focus upon
assisting law enforcement to cope with distressing consequences of
traumatic incidents and to build resilience for future ones. The STLS
incorporates elements which appear to provide a unique constellation of
“curative factors” (Yalom, 1995) that render it an unparalleled therapeutic
experience for traumatic bereavement. It integrates trained peer support;
large and small group work; psychoeducation about trauma, loss, and
coping; medical massage; and personal one-on-one consultation with
therapists familiar with law enforcement issues, posttraumatic stress, and
the trauma recovery method of EMDR. It is to be offered numerous times
annually within South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.
