About this Calendar
The Global Education and Peace Network began when a small group of committed Springfield citizens decided that they needed to “ do something” in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The Sixteenth Annual Global Education Calendar and Speaker Series is the fruit of that labor. The Global Education Series provides an opportunity for our community to be exposed to other ethnic groups, cultures, and religions as a way of increasing under-standing and therefore, respect for those who are different from us. Please join us for the monthly Global Education Speaker Series and help us build bridg-es within our own global community. The members of the Global Education and Peace Network are : Ms. Samina Ahmed, Ms. Cheryl Berry, Ms. Mary Brandstetter, Ms. Cheryl DeGroat Dover, Ms. Nancy Flinchbaugh, Mr. Jerry Laub, Dr. Ravi and Vinita Khanna, Ms. Winkie Mitchell, Dr. Akber Mohammed, Dr. Jennifer Oldstone-Moore, Ms. Zeeba Ranginwala, Ms. Far-hana Rauf, Dr. Carl Ruby and Ms. Jagdish Singh. New members of the Global Education and Peace Network are always welcome. How can you become a member? Feel free to contact Nancy Flinchbaugh at (937) 324-7696.
CultureFest. An annual festival of food, music, dance and fun to celebrate eth-nic and international cultures of Springfield and Clark County, www.springfieldohio.gov/culturefest. Fair Housing. It’s no wonder why Springfield was named an All-America City. The citizens of Springfield work together everyday to become a more globally aware
community. By striving to stay educated about the world around them, Springfield residents can continually discover new ways in which they can help
build a better global society. When everyone does their part, the world can change in incredible ways. This is the spirit of Springfield– a city filled
with hope for the future of all humankind.

Global Education
JOIN US for the 2017-2018 Global Education Calendar and Speakers Series: Explor-
ing Cultural Celebrations and Spiritual Journeys. Since the beginning, we have
chosen themes that illuminate our global and ethnic cultures. For this, our 16th year, we
are extending ourselves out of the classroom and into the community to learn about
cultural and religious traditions in churches, the university, a mosque, on the City Hall
Plaza, and in the John Legend Theater. We hope you’ll join us in attending, listening
and considering what you can do to promote intercultural understanding as a global
citizen.
In September, we’ll begin the year on the City Hall Plaza for CultureFest with a booth
on the Grassy Knoll. Come visit us all day long. From 11-1 learn about Asian tradi-
tions. From 1-3 try on a turban or hijab, and learn from our Sikh and Muslim communi-
ty members. From 3-5, try on a colorful African-American head wrap, and from 5-6
come hit the piñata and enjoy Mexican traditions. In October, we will join the Hindu
community as they celebrate Diwali with art, food and dance in the John Legend Thea-
ter. In November, we will view pictures with Muslim Samina Ahmed and learn about
her August Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, along with her new friends at Central Christian
Church. For December, we’ll join Mexican-Americans for a posadas party at St. Tere-
sa’s Catholic Church. In January, we’re invited to participate in an Interfaith Small
Group, led by Rev. Dr. Jennifer Oldstone-Moore, Wittenberg professor. In February
we’ll join the Wittenberg East Asian Studies Department for their Lunar New Year
celebration at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with an afternoon of music, food,
hands-on preparations, and dancing. In March, we’ll celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a
Celtic Spiritual Retreat led by spiritual director, Lauren Burdette at St. Raphael Catho-
lic Church, followed by an Irish stew luncheon with live Irish music. In April, join the
Interfaith Youth Alliance for an evening of poetry and share music of ethnic and spir-
itual traditions. In May, the Baha’i community invites us to join them at Wittenberg for
a celebration of one of their holy days. In June, we will gather for the Third Annual
Interfaith Peace Walk beginning at City Hall Plaza and walking to the Underground
Railroad Gammon House for their Juneteenth/FatherFest Celebration. Dr. Mohammed
invites you to tour the Masjid Al-Madina Mosque on South Burnett in late June.
Come join us to learn, grow and meet new friends
To continue to build bridges of understanding
across cultures during our 16th year.

The Hindu Community of
Springfield has celebrated Diwali local-

performances on the stage, lighting up
their houses in October/ November
and offering gourmet Indian dinner
and desserts to guests.
For Hindus and Sikhs in India and all over
the world Diwali is the biggest festival which falls in October/November. It signifies victory
of nobility over evil. It is celebrated by lighting
lamps all around and inside homes. Prayers,
firecrackers and exchange of gifts and sweets
are all offered to generate goodwill. It is like
having American Thanksgiving, Christmas
and Fourth of July all in one celebra-

The Hajj: The Pilgrimage to Mecca
Come and learn about the way Muslims perform The Hajj with Samina Ahmed, Thursday, November 16th, 6:30 p.m. at Central Christian Church!
The Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
All physically fit Muslims who can afford it should make a trip to Mecca in Saudi Arabia at least
once in their lives.
At least 2 million Muslims travel to Mecca for the Hajj every year.
The main focal point of the Hajj is the visit to the Ka’ba (pictured above).
It takes 5 -6 days to complete the Hajj.

Since 2001, the Global Education and Peace Network has provided a forum for intercultural understanding. The network in-cludes people from many different cultural traditions, and so our presenters are not representing the network’s views, but rather their own personal and cultural views. Our goal is to create an environment of respect where we can learn from each other and build bridges of understanding. Many times the viewpoints we hear differ from our own cultural and reli-gious viewpoints, and yet we try to understand, to learn and to extend the hand of friendship. In such a diverse world, we believe it is very important to be able to disagree with each other and still be friends.
Global Education and Peace Network Mission
Last year the group celebrated 15 years of programming and calendars. The network meets monthly for planning meetings. If you would like to join, call the City of Springfield Community Development at
