Greetings,
Club membership gives you an opportunity to meet people you
wouldn’t normally meet from your community and become close.
At Oakwood we continually strive to provide our membership with
events and entertainment that enables you to do just that.
This month we are featuring the 9 Hole Crawl & Fall Festival! On
October 10 there will be a 9 Hole Par 3 Scramble tournament with
German Food & Beer Samplings on three of the nine holes begin-
ning at 3 PM. Sign up for the event is located outside of the Pro-
Shop. Following golf there will be a buffet dinner served from 5 PM
to 6:30 PM. Following dinner Hypnotist Extraordinaire, Dan Lornitis
will perform once again. If you did not catch the show two years
ago, this is one you do not want to miss. This is an ala carte event
meaning you can choose whichever activity you would like to par-
take in. Although I recommend the trifecta! Details on all three
events are located inside this newsletter.

From the Ladies’ Organization
What great weather we have had in September! Let’s hope the nice weather continues so we keep playing and enjoy the fall colors and being outdoors.
The IWGA State Senior Amateur Tournament was held at Decatur Country Club. This year we only had 5 ladies giving it their best shot, Joyce Aller, Rose Barnet, Donna Edwards, Shelly Foster and Denise Killion. Good play-ing ladies in spite of zoysia grass and water in front of fast greens. Hopefully we will have more players repre-senting Oakwood next year at Champaign Country Club.
As of this writing the Solheim Cup has begun with 34 ladies signing up for this fun competition. Teams of red and blue were seen on the course along with many cheers and jeers. A big thank you to Rose Barnet for organ-izing the event and to Captains, Margie Delgado and Terrase Winkelbauer.
UPCOMING EVENT – Please make sure you attend the Ladies’ Fall Dinner on Tuesday, October 6TH and enjoy a great meal and the presentation of bridge and golf awards. You can phone your reservation to the office
at 799-3153 by October 2nd. Come out and enjoy the company of friends and maybe even make new ones.
SAVE THE DATE of Saturday, November 14 for the Fall Fashion Show. Bring your friends and have a nice lunch and great afternoon at Oakwood. It is always a fun time seeing the Oakwood lady models in new fashions from different vendors.
If you are currently not a member of the Ladies' Organization please consider joining next season. Dues are $20.00 and help support scholarships and other charities through IWGA, give monetary support of women's needs at the Club and go toward prizes for Ladies' Organization sponsored activities.
Ladies' Bridge Group – This group is always looking for new members and they play on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. If you are interested in being a part of the group, contact Jane Gavin and she will be glad to get you in-volved.
Email List – Frequent reminders about Ladies’ Organization activities are sent via email. If you would like to be added or have a change in your email address, please send an email to [email protected].
Cards – If you know of any lady of Oakwood to whom we should send a card, please contact Tricia Barron,
Social Secretary or any Ladies’ Organization Officer.
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE CLUB!

Closing Smoker TREMBLE: This year for the Closing Smoker we went with a new format and did it ever make the guys “TREMBLE”. It was an A, B, C, D draw for the (19) teams the par-ticipated. Each player would tee off and then 1 player had to play his own ball and the other 3 players played a scramble counting (2) balls on each hole. There was all sorts of strategy with this format and many positive comments on the competition. Congratulations to the top 3 teams.

From The Golf Course Committee - October, 2015
Well folks, fall is upon us and we have begun our fall projects. Troy and his staff have aerated the greens, so they will be a tad slower for a week or two, but should fill in and be back to our preferred speed in no time. Patience. Fairway and tee aeration will commence soon, so please be patient with that initiative too. If you have played after Labor Day, you have noticed the bunker renovation has resumed. Our contrac-tor Larry started on #10, and will continue to #11, #16, and #12 for starters. Time permitting, we will meet with him to determine which additional bunkers he can complete this fall. Larry does the design and drain tiling, while Troy and his staff install the sand and sod around the bunkers. We have found this to be the most expedient and cost saving approach to the renovation. Fortunately, the existing tiles that drain away from the #10 bunkers were still usable – they were plugged at the bunker ends only. Hopefully, this holds true for others as Larry progresses. It saves time and money! We will use excess dirt and sand from the bunker project to rework and expand some of the tees iden-tified in last month’s newsletter. This includes starting the tee complex for the eventual #18 reroute plans. Let’s all hope for good playing conditions throughout the fall, as we don’t want a short season now, do we? Finally, we’d like to thank Derek Engstrom for the nice job on #1 Tee. The final product is a great addi-tion to our golf course and really opens up the view from the club house and pro shop area.
December, January and February Food & Beverage Minimums
The Club will be closing on January 2, 2016 for annual maintenance and deep cleaning, reopening on January 28th, 2016. Your monthly minimum will be af-fected by the shutdown. We will be altering the monthly minimum cycle in order to accommodate you during the last three months of the fiscal year. Members whose last names begin with the letters A - M will have from No-vember 16, 2015 through February 15, 2016 to use their combined three month minimums. For example, if you are a Family 40+ golf member whose last name begins with the letter J, you will have from November 16, 2015 through February 15, 2016 to spend $180 in food and beverage charges. Mem-bers whose last names begin with the letters N - Z will have from December 1, 2015 through February 29, 2016 to use their combined three month mini-mums. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call the office.

Featured Wine Heavyweight Cabernet Sauvignon
2012
Ingredients: 12 ounces Fettuccine -- uncooked 1 pound fresh baby carrots 1 10-ounce pearl onions 1 pound beef tenderloin tips OR 1 pound steaks -- cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons margarine 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 10 1/2-ounces double-strength beef broth 1/3 cup cabernet sauvignon 1.5 teaspoons dried thyme leaves Chopped fresh thyme or Italian parsley (optional) Procedure: Cook pasta according to package direc-tions. Add carrots during last 5 minutes of cooking time. Meanwhile, thaw onions in microwave oven at high power about 2 minutes or in a bowl of cool water; drain. Combine flour, salt and pepper in a plastic bag. Add half of beef to bag; shake to coat. Melt 1 tablespoon margarine in a
large, deep nonstick skillet over medium-high heat; add floured beef. Quickly brown beef, turning once, about 2 minutes. Trans-fer to plate and set aside. Melt remaining tablespoon of margarine in skillet; repeat browning with remaining beef, reserving any flour mixture in bag. Transfer beef to same plate. Add garlic to drippings in skillet; cook 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add any remaining flour; mix well. Add beef broth, thawed pearl onions, wine and thyme to skillet; bring to a boil. Stir in re-served beef. Simmer uncovered about 4 minutes or until beef is pink in center and sauce
Here, the syrah and zin add extra power, spice, richness and warmth to this wonderful Cabernet. You also get smooth tannins, very dark burgundy color and the expected currants, black raspberry and other dark fruits flavors. As BBQ season is in full swing, this wine will pair well with anything fresh off the grill. After a couple of sips, you may need to go to your corner and catch your breath!
