1. Ask students to describe mean language or mean words, giving them permission to say things they wouldn’t normally be allowed to say. Using the wordpack app, compile their responses into an image. Ask students to select the image, guiding them to the sad faces. Discuss why the sad face is the best choice for this word cloud. Ask them to share the significance of the sad face image and explore how unkind language makes people feel. Have them predict what shape we will use at the end of today’s lesson.

2. Discuss with the students the following questions: a. What does it mean to show kindness or respect? b. Why do we show kindness and respect? c. How can we show kindness and respect (solicit specific examples) and group them into the

following categories: i. Using Manners

ii. Giving Compliments

iii. Using a kind voice-polite questions, etc.

3. Intro the story by showing the students the pictures and asking them to predict what will happen. (The Prince and the Rhinoceros, A Indian Tale of Speaking Kindly)

a. Ask the students to listen for the examples of kind language. b. Ask students to listen for the ORDER of the story-what happened in the beginning, the middle

and the end.

4. After reading the story, discuss the kind language used. Talk about their prediction, was it correct or not? Did they like the story? Why or why not?

5. Using the activeboard, complete the sequencing activity with the students

6. Practice kind language with role plays: As they do the role plays, ask the class to figure out which kind of kind language they are using and suggest other ideas.

7. Project the image of the “sad face” wordpack and ask students how they could change it. Using their

responses, create a new wordpack with examples of kind language. (Knapp, Toni. “The Prince and the Rhinoceros: An Indian Tale of Speaking Kindly.” In Rhinos & Raspberries: Tolerance Tales for the Early Grades. Edited by Jeff Sapp. Montgomery, AL: Teaching Tolerance, 2006.)

2. How do you feel when you’re angry-what’s the difference between being annoyed and being infuriated? Using a thermometer as a visual to explore this difference.

6. Assessment: Have each student individually create a three panel comic with the following parameters: a. Choose a setting (see list below) and develop some characters for this setting. b. In the first box: Set up the story-who are your characters and what are they doing? c. In the second box: One of the characters is angry for some reason. Describe his/her anger

signals and anger triggers. d. In the 3rd box: Show how he/she manages his/her anger by using one of our cool down

strategies. 7. Separate the students into groups by setting. Each group should combine their cartoons into one: One

student should contribute the characters, one should contribute the anger signals/triggers, and one should contribute the cool down technique.

8. Using the “Toon Tastic” App, students will create a group cartoon to share with the class. Suggested Settings from the App: In a city In the snow In the kitchen In a treehouse At school On the playground At the skatepark On the basketball court On the soccer field

homework, more tests, more than one test on the same day, etc.) 4. Explain how using new study/note taking techniques could be one way to keep up with the demands of 5th grade-it could be helpful if students use strategies that match a learning style. Explain the three learning styles and have students make a prediction regarding their individual learning style. 5. Students will then complete Learning Styles Quiz and score it. Examples can be found here: Learning Style Inventories. Discuss-did your result match your prediction. Did it surprise you? What does this mean? How can we use this info to help us succeed in 5th grade? 6. Review each style and discuss characteristics. Show Video: “Learning Style Strategies” and explore ways to utilize each learning style. Students will choose at least 3 strategies from their primary learning style and 2 other options and take notes on each. Strategies can be found here: Learning Styles and Study Tips 7. Complete Post Test using the Plickers App. Score and review as needed. Sample Post Test Questions:

1. This student uses different colored highlighters to mark the synonyms and antonyms in the vocabulary book. (Visual)

2. This student traces her spelling words when she is studying for a test (Tactile/Kinesthetic) 3. This student reads his science vocabulary words and definitions out loud as he write his flashcards

(Auditory)

8. Group activity: Group students by learning style. They are give a “mock” test to prepare for with a “mock” study guide. Using their knowledge of the learning styles they should design a study plan for the test. Students should prepare a demonstration of their study plan. 9. Present Study Plans to the class.
