This simple tutorial shows you how to split a single Joomla menu across two Joomla modules in different positions on the template.It works for Joomla 1.5, Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3.

The goal: using the same menu tree, we want to show the first level items in the top module position,and show the lower level items in the side module position.

Here’s our main menu viewed in the Joomla 3 Menu Manager.There is no special treatment here apart from the sub-menu levels branching off the “Extensions” item.
Here is where we want to split the menu across two
modules

Here is the Joomla 3 Module Manager filtered on the module type of “Menu”. Note there are two modules in different positions. Consult your template’s documentation to find the best positions for you.

Here is the edit form for the “Main Menu” module on the previous slide that will display in the top position. The key is to set the start and end level to 1, and don’t show the sub-menu levels.
Start at level 1

Here is the edit form for the “Extension” module on the previous slide that will display in the side position. The key is to set the start to 2 and end level to 2 or more.
Start at level 2 this time
The main menu, same as the other module
End at level 2 or more
If you set this to “Yes”, all the sub-menus will open up.
If you set it to “No”, only the active sub-menu will open.

When we click on, for example, “Artof Comments” in the side menu, it will expand but “Extensions” on the top menu will remain highlighted.
