Thanksgiving is still another week away, but you can bet all of the workthat goes into feeding a small army has been on Scott Mills’ mind for sometime already.

That’s not to say Mills is panicking. In fact, the area resident is a veteranwhen it comes to organizing a large Thanksgiving dinner, having served ascoordinator Cass City’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner for the past twodecades.

A big part of that responsibility is lining up an adequate crew to cook, setup, clean up and put away, and Mills is quick to say he isn’t in the habit ofturning down volunteers, especially when he typically anticipates preparingand serving enough food for roughly 250 people.

“We’re always hoping for and open for volunteers for clean-up and serv-ing,” said Mills, who noted much of the food preparation takes place the daybefore the dinner. And, of course, there’s also plenty to do on the day of the

Calendar captain surrenders the helm

(And anyone else he canget to help)

Better to be safethan sorry this fall

The household calendar has been my responsibility for20-plus years. Any human being in charge of his or herfamily calendar understands the significance of thisduty. The calendar is the helm of the family ship. Itsteers us in the direction dictated by the day’s agenda. Agood captain holds tight to the helm and ensures accu-rate and efficient schedule fulfillment.

Problem is, I’m not much of a captain. I’m more likeGilligan.

If a schedule or appointment can be confused, bum-bled, misinterpreted, forgotten or otherwise discombob-ulated, I am your gal. I did it again today. You’d thinkafter all these years my husband would be fed up withmy inadequacy and take over the duties himself – sort oflike what I did with him and the laundry.

Who am I kidding? He’s smarter than that. So here we are, less than a week into the latest youth

sports season. Today was the Parent Meeting. Over theyears I’ve missed more Parent Meetings than the cast-aways missed opportunities for getting off that darnisland. But not today. Today I was prepared. I wrote“PARENT MEETING” in big letters on the calendar. Atthe appointed hour both my husband and I were in atten-dance, practically wearing our Responsible Parentbadges. As we waited for the meeting to start, one of the moms

wondered out loud if the kids were almost done practic-ing.

Practicing? My face took on the expression of a deer in the head-

lights: dazed, stunned and unsure which way to run. Ilooked desperately around the room, hoping to see otherconfused parents. They were an antlerless bunch.

“There was practice today?” I tried to sound noncha-lant as I asked the facetious question.

“It was listed on the website,” said one mom.“In two places,” said another.Oops. I’d checked the schedule three times that day and knew

one thing for certain: it was completely my fault.Somehow I’d glossed over the entry labeled “Practice”and replaced it with the words, “Take the afternoon off.”There wasn’t anything I could say in my defense, so Isaid nothing. After 20-plus years of scheduling blunders, you learn to shut up and minimize your damages. Andavoid eye contact with your husband.

In the end, I fessed up to the team manager about myscheduling inabilities. She was understanding. Theyusually are until they experience a season or two of myschedulitis. When I got home, I told my son about the gaffe. “Great,

I missed already,” he said. “I told you there was practicetoday.”

I didn’t remember that conversation. But again, when

you’ve got a record like mine you recall not recalling anynumber of conversations that may or may not have takenplace on previous occasions for which you most likelycannot pin down the date or time.

“I know,” he said. “I’ll keep track of my own schedule. Then I won’t miss anything.”

The kid had a point. Besides, what do I have to lose?(Other than my scheduling reputation, and we all knowthat went down with the S.S. Minnow.)

It’s ingenious, really – turning the schedule reigns overto a 12-year-old. He’ll probably get himself to practice ontime and may even learn a lesson about responsibility asa bonus. I figure he can’t do any worse than me and nowthat I don’t have to worry about being calendar captainI’ll be free to simply go with the flow and enjoy thegames.

It’s going to be a great season.---

Thumb area hunters are enjoying Michigan’sannual regular firearm season right along withtheir peers across the state following Saturday’sopener, which was filled with the usual excite-ment and anticipation around a campfire.

But make no mistake about it, it only takes asplit-second for a poor decision or carelessnessto end in tragedy in the woods during a timewhen happy memories lasting a lifetime shouldbe in the making.

There were nine reported hunting accidents in2013, including one self-inflicted fatality andthree in which hunters shot others, according toMichigan Department of Natural Resources(DNR) officials, who attributed a majority of theincidents to careless handling of a firearm. Oneof those shootings occurred in Tuscola Countyand involved a subject that was climbing into ablind when he dropped his shotgun and it dis-charged, striking him in the thigh.

Last year’s hunting accident statistics wereactually a big improvement over past years. In2007, for example, the state reported 32 incidentsand two fatalities.

Of course, firearms aren’t the only potentialcause of injury and death among hunters. Take ahunter’s health, for example. Dragging a deerout of the woods can be life-threatening, espe-cially when it comes to undiagnosed health prob-lems combined with heavy-duty exercise forsomeone who isn’t used to that sort of exertion.

Tree stands also present a source of danger;hunters fall out of them regularly or injure them-selves while climbing up or down, sometimesending in a lifetime of paralysis.

The lesson to be learned here? Simple: don’tever forget to be careful. And be prepared — ifyou plan to hunt from a tree stand and don’t havea safety harness, get one. If you don’t know howto use one, learn.

It’s also never too late to go over the basics ofhunter safety in your mind, no matter how manyseasons are behind you.

Here are a few of the most important rules:*Always keep the muzzle of a gun pointed in a

safe direction.*Firearms should be unloaded when not actual-

ly in use.*Don’t rely on your gun’s safety mechanism.*Be sure of your target and, equally important,

what’s behind it.*Use the correct ammunition.*If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is

pulled, handle with care!*Always wear eye and ear protection when

shooting.*Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions

before shooting.*Don’t alter or modify a gun, and have all

firearms serviced regularly.*Learn the mechanical and handling character-

istics of the firearm you are using.

A 30-year war? Startby firing Kerry, HagelDear editor,

They say fighting the rad-icals will be a 30-year war.Leaders John Kerry (secre-tary of state) and ChuckHagel (secretary ofdefense) should be fireimmediately because allthey’re good for is gettingtheir photographs taken.

This mess with the radi-cals can be solved in oneyear. First, seal the board-ers, which will take onemonth. Second, add anamendment to the FirstAmendment stating any-body in America who hastaken up these radicalviews and says they wantto kill American peoplewill lose their citizenshipand be deported immedi-ately. If there’s a judge outthere that doesn’t believe inthis, deport them, too. Thatwill solve the problem. Iwould never let anybodyhide behind the FirstAmendment, saying thatthey are going to kill us andwe can’t do anything aboutit until they do.

In the Middle East, Iwouldn’t need anyAmerican ground troops. Icould get enough Kurdishtroops there with air sup-port and I’ll tell them whatto hit. Iran has to give uptheir center fuses and, ifthey didn’t comply, I willtell Israel to take them and,if they need help, they willget it. America better

understand they are outthere to kill us. If we don’t,we will pay dearly. I’d tellTurkey not to straddle thefence; put both feet on oneside or the other so I knowwhere they stand. Tell thecoalition to go straight tohell.

Then back to America toclean out the Pentagon ofall the deadbeat brass. Cutcorporate business tax 36percent down to 18 percentso we can bring our manu-facturers back. If they don’tdo this, then they are notinterested in creating jobs.Overhaul the Bureau ofLand Management and theEPA because they’re totallyout of control. They need tostop 90 percent of the grantsfor the next four years. There are so many thingsone can cut, I don’t know ifI could hire enough peopleto keep my blade sharp.

If the Republicans don’tlead this country in the rightdirection, they will have toput on a federal endangeredspecies list for the world tosee what they should havedone and didn’t do it.The Pentagon had to know

to have peace there it wouldhave had to be a brutalundertaking. If they didn’thave the backbone to do itthen, they should havestayed out of there. To winit, America would have todo what ISIS is doing now.

Thanks a lot Sandy. After bagging the mature buck pictured here on open-

ing morning of Michigan’s firearm deer season in HuronCounty. I decided to takemy trophy home (9 miles)to field dress the critter asI thought hanging the 8-point buck from our swingset would easy the chore.

Bad choice. Sandy – our6-year-old golden retriever– ate the buck’s innardsand then deposited theguts a few minutes later onthe carpet in the Haire’sfamily room.

You probably can guesswho is in the dog house atour Virginia Street homeand it isn’t man’s bestfriend.

As is tradition, this year’s dinnerwill be held Thanksgiving Day,Thursday, Nov. 27, at the Cass CityUnited Methodist Church, locatedjust north of the village on CemeteryRoad. The meal is served at noon, and everyone is welcome. The dinner is free, but make no mis-

take about it; this is no charity event, and it’s not a soup kitchen for theneedy. This project is all about shar-ing and bringing members of thecommunity together for food and fel-lowship.

The first Cass City CommunityThanksgiving Dinner was organizedback in 1986 at the former St.Pancratius Catholic Church (nowOur Lady Consolata Parish) in town.Earlier that year, former area resi-dent Alan Klco came up with theidea and, sharing his thoughts withBob Gengler, the two men went towork.

Volunteers from other area church-es were contacted to put together avillage-wide and ecumenical project.

Over the years, the dinner has beenlocated at the local VFW hall and, more recently, at the Cass CityUnited Methodist Church, where fullkitchen facilities have enabledorganizers to dispense with having toutilize three different kitchens to pre-

Beware whenpurchasing aused vehicleSecretary of State Ruth Johnson and

Michigan State Police Director Col.Kriste Kibbey Etue are encouragingdrivers to do their homework beforepurchasing a vehicle in a privatesale.

“If the deal looks too good to betrue, it probably is,” Johnson said.“If you come across an expensive caroffered at a ridiculously low price ora seller who refuses to go to aSecretary of State office with you forthe title transfer, walk away. Bykeeping some common sense tips inmind, you can protect yourself fromfraud and loss when buying a vehiclein a private sale.”

There have been several stolenvehicles with fake titles offered forsale in Metro Detroit since 2012,often by con-artists who find theirvictims through ads onCraigslist.org.

“Buyers should be very cautiouswhen purchasing a used vehicle in aprivate sale,” Etue said. “Doing a lit-tle research and taking some simpleprecautions can help car buyers pro-tect themselves from becoming avictim.”Before buying a vehicle from some-

one other than an auto dealer,Johnson and Etue recommend carbuyers:

*Complete the vehicle sale at apolice station or Secretary of StateOffice to make it easy to have thevehicle title verified as authentic.Ask the seller to accompany you forthe title transfer. If the seller seemsuncomfortable, offers excuses orrefuses to go, step away from thedeal.

*Arrange the sale, preferably dur-ing business hours, in a well-lit loca-tion with surveillance cameras if thesale cannot be conducted at a policestation or at a Secretary of Stateoffice. Avoid transactions held inparking lots of closed or vacant busi-nesses. Many scams are staged inless populated areas on a Fridaynight or the weekend when business-es, such as banks and insurance com-panies, are closed.

*Check the seller’s identification toverify that he or she is the owner ofthe vehicle. All owners listed on thefront of the title must sign off as thesellers to transfer the title.*If the seller indicates that he or she

represents a vehicle dealership with-out being able to provide a walllicense to verify that the location islicensed, walk away from the sale. All vehicle dealer transactions arerequired to be conducted at alicensed established place of busi-ness or at a licensed supplementallocation within the same county.

pare all of the dishes. Although the location of the dinner

has changed over the years, the senseof community has not.

For many years, the Knights ofColumbus provided the turkeys. Inrecent years, as the dinner hasgrown, volunteers have purchasedthe birds themselves using donations– diners typically consume 14turkeys over the course of the annualfeast. Past community dinners alsosaw the former Sutter’s Bakeryroasting the turkeys, and variouschurches signed up to provide sidedishes, salads and pies.Today, area churches still contribute

to the meal, as do local service clubsand Hills and Dales GeneralHospital, and other organizations. Inaddition, Cass City students havebecome a driving force in helping toprepare and clean up after the dinner.

The philosophy, from the start, wasto imitate the historical image of theoriginal Thanksgiving. All werewelcome and sat down together toenjoy the feast – just one largeextended Cass City family pitchingin, serving and joining in the celebra-tion.

“It’s a full meal and the intention isto sit as a family – a community,”Mills said. “It’s family-style. It’snot a restaurant. That was the origi-nal intent and I think we’ve prettymuch kept that tenet.”

permanent love and support they need and deserve.”In a casual setting, Thane added, people who have been affected by the

adoption process, along with members of the public who are interested inlearning more about adoption, will get together and enjoy an “open house”of sorts with refreshments.

“Every child deserves a safe and loving home,” Thane said. “We come towork every day, trying to make that a reality. We have a collaborative teamof professionals that meets every quarter to discuss how we can continue tomake this process as successful as it can be.

Reporter’s notebook

by Tom MontgomeryEditor

I’ll be the first to tell you my wife is a great nurse. She’s the sort ofcompassionate caregiver you want taking care of someone you love, because her eye is always on her patients – not some clock. She often brings concerns about those patients home with her because

she can’t help it. You see, she really cares about them.Having said that, however, let me also tell you the “Nurse Debby”

patients see in Bay City, Midland, West Branch, etc., doesn’t alwayslive up to that persona at home — around her loving husband —because, well, she’s married me.

Which is why she was bandaging a cut on my hand in the kitchen theother day and, after listening to me repeatedly give her advice on posi-tioning of said bandage, got frustrated and told me to do it myself.“Hmmmph! What sort of bedside manner is that?” I grumbled as shewalked away, ignoring me.That’s about the time I’m tempted to ask, with just the slightest hint of

sarcasm, how she can be so compassionate and thorough in her treat-ment of patients, and yet couldn’t complete a minor project at home ina reasonable amount of time if her life depended on it.

Admittedly, her finished projects are usually impressive – done cor-rectly because she has the patience to look at instructions, etc.

I’m still tempted to say something snotty, but I don’t always followthrough because I get the feeling that my life might depend on just let-ting it go. This time.

Speaking of age and wisdom I have to laugh a little every time I seethat commercial sponsored by (I think) AARP that features a fresh-faced woman, walking along a scenic trail on a beautiful day, telling ushow she’s only in her 60s and has “a nice long life ahead, big plans….”

I don’t mean to be a killjoy, so to speak, but my first reaction is,maybe, maybe not, lady.

Not that I believe 60 is old. I used to, and I can remember long-timeCass City Chronicle Publisher the late-John Haire bristling a bit someyears ago when, in one of my stories, I referred to a man in his 60s asbeing “elderly”. Of course, that was when I wasn’t in my 50s. Funnyhow your perspective changes as the years go by and you suddenly findyourself quietly counting the number of years you have before youreach 60, isn’t it?I don’t mind a bit of optimism, like the sort overflowing from the lady

in this commercial, but reading the obituaries has a way of bringing youback down to reality, especially when more and more of the publishednames belong to folks who were younger when they passed than youare.

The bottom line, at least for me, is you can’t count on anything whenit comes to longevity. That is, I’m a firm believer in the view that whenit’s your time to go, it’s your time.

I wish that thought would always be at the forefront of my mind, andnot just when I see family members and friends grieve when they’velost a loved one, as reporters often do.

Sort of makes you want to go out and hug someone you haven’thugged in a while, doesn’t it?

Slowly but surely, I’m getting to know my new neighbors. Most area friendly, welcoming bunch, but there are a couple that tend to be a bitstandoffish. I don’t mind, given these “neighbors” have black fur witha very prominent white stripe down their backs.

I’m tempted to put up a sign at the driveway entrance, warning folksto beware of skunks and sarcastic weekly newspaper editors, but somemight consider that to be a bit redundant.

I’ve got better things to do, anyway. In fact, now that I’ve got a bit ofspace out here in the country, I’m considering raising a few chickens.Maybe even keeping some bees.

I’ve often wondered what it would be like to get my honey for noth-in’ and my chicks for free.

Badum crash.

“It just really showed the unity inour building,” Walker said. “It wassuch a great project for the wholeschool — even the kids who weren’tin it (video) were excited.” “We are extremely impressed by the

incredible entries we received fromMichigan kids entered in the

MIKidsCan contest,” Hetzel said. “These finalists are great examples ofhow kids can have a great time getting active every day, and we think they’llinspire other kids to do the same.”

While Cass City will be hosting Stafford during an assembly focusing onhealthy eating and exercise, the winner of the photo/essay category willreceive tickets to the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game along with someautographed Detroit Lions gear.

Hetzel said the competition is an extension of Blue Cross’ ongoing effortsto help Michigan families make good choices leading to healthier lifestyles,in an effort to combat issues such as childhood obesity – nearly one in threechildren in this nation are overweight, and Michigan has the 18th highestchildhood obesity rate in the United States.

With a focus on improving children’s health, Hetzel added, over the pastdecade Blue Cross has given more than $6 million in support of kids’ healthand wellness initiatives across the state, reaching more than 100,000 young-sters.

THIS YEAR’S harvest has turned into a marathon of sorts, thanks to weath-

er conditions that have significantly delayed maturity of some crops. Farmers

are in a race against the clock, with weather quickly approaching, and the late

harvest has officials concerned about the potential for accidents involving

passenger vehicles and tractors and other farm equipment on rural roadways.

MARATHONFarmers and motoristsin Thumb facing some

challenges this yearby Tom Montgomery

Editor

The fall harvest has turned into a marathon this year, rather than the usualsprint to the finish, causing potential headaches for farmers as well asmotorists, who are reminded to be aware of farm equipment on Thumb road-ways later than usual this fall.

“Nobody’s more eager than the farmers themselves to get this year’s grainout of the field and into storage, but as autumn transitions toward winter, theconditions necessary for accomplishing that task are slipping away,” saidCraig Anderson, manager of Agricultural Labor and Safety Services atMichigan Farm Bureau (MFB).“Slowly but surely, they’re getting the job done, but the clock’s ticking and

that means everyone behind the wheel of a vehicle needs to maintain thatextra level of caution and awareness that’s warranted when we’ve got trac-tors, combines and grain trucks sharing the roads with everyday sedans,mini-vans and SUVs,” Anderson added.

“We’re heading into the shortest days of the year, with daylight fading fastwhen most of us nine-to-fivers are heading home for the day,” he noted.“Psychologically, that alone impairs our attentiveness – that’s bad enough. But when you add to the equation random pieces of bulky, slow-movingfarm equipment, the potential for disaster is all too real.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National AgricultureStatistics Service (NASS) Great Lakes Regional Office, only 31 percent ofMichigan’s 2014 corn crop was harvested as of Nov. 1 – some 20 percentbehind the five-year average. Soybeans were roughly 71 percent harvested, about 12 percent behind average.“Mother Nature’s been setting the stage for this all year,” said Bob Boehm,

manager of the MFB Center for Commodity, Farming and IndustryRelations. “Last winter was brutal and long; spring was cold, wet and slow;summer was relatively cool; and a fairly wet autumn so far has led to delaysin harvesting.”On the bright side, yields so far have been encouraging. Corn yields are on

track for a record high of 166 bushels per acre – 11 bushels per acre morethan last year – and soybean yields of 45 bushels an acre are slightly betterthan in 2013.

Sugar beets are bucking the trend, according to Boehm, who says the har-vest is ahead of schedule and more than three-quarters complete, with yieldsapproaching 30 tons per acre – numbers that are poised to best 2012’sbumper crop.

But there are a number of potential complications this year. While the harvest is nearing completion or finished for most crops, the corn

harvest will linger as fields continue to see rain and now snow, while mois-ture levels of grain remain higher than normal, according to Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association (MABA).

“Test weights – the amount a bushel of corn weighs – for corn are going tosuffer, and we’re already seeing issues such as vomitoxin in corn. The natureof this harvest means more expense to ship the crop, more expense to dry itand a tougher time marketing it,” Byrum added. “Growers are balancingsome critical issues as we wrap up harvest.”Typical moisture levels for corn are in the range of 14 to 19 percent, but so

far this year grain is trending in the 20- to 30-percent range, and even intothe low 30s, according to Byrum. Corn moisture determines how easily it can be stored, and the quality of the

grain when it is used for feed or other purposes. Grain stored through thefall, winter and beyond ideally contains no more than 14 to 15 percent mois-ture to avoid mold and other problems.

Test weight, another measure of corn quality – specifically, how much abushel (by volume) of grain actually weighs – is also trending lower. Thenormal test weight for corn is 56 pounds per bushel, but this year, thatweight is generally significantly lower, with some samples testing below 50pounds per bushel.

Byrum said the unpredictable weather, extended harvest season and lowercrop test weights are already raising issues across Michigan agriculture, including:

*Natural gas availability is critical as grain drying needs increase. Grainelevators and farmers dry their crop with heat generated either by propaneor natural gas, and the cost of doing so this year will be significant becauseof the amount of drying required. There also is a real concern about gas supplies and cost as the season wears

on. Farmers may be inclined to leave their crop in the field, hoping for nat-ural “dry down,” but that can be difficult, especially if snow and cold weath-er come early, as is forecast over the next few weeks.

*Transportation logistics and infrastructure are front and center once againthis year.

This year’s crop will be high-volume, but low test weight. That meanstrucks and rail cars may be full with volume, but because of the lower weightof the corn itself, transportation costs, rail cars and trucks will cost more tomove. A more serious problem is that buyers often require corn to meet cer-tain test weight requirements, and it may be tough to meet those conditionswith this year’s crop.

*For commodity crop producers, markets have scaled back from recordlevels of recent years. Prices have moderated since reaching record four-yearlows early this fall on projections of record corn and soybean crops. However, lower prices are forecast well through next year, and farm finan-cials will be stressed over the coming months. Many say that agriculture isin a decent position to weather the downturn, with strong farm financial indi-cators after several years of high prices.

“When you factor in prices, the difficulty posed by this year’s harvest ismagnified for producers and the businesses they work with,” Byrum said.“These new challenges come at a time when prices for corn have dropped bymore than 30 percent in the past year, to levels that many farmers say is ator below their cost of production. These conditions will put even more stresson farmers as they struggle to get the crop under cover and start planning fornext year.”

Early indications suggest that pricing and challenges this year may causefarmers to reduce their corn acreage in 2015, but cropping options are lim-ited.

Wheat, normally planted in the fall, is an attractive crop for many, but rainand a late soybean and dry bean harvest have limited the acreage availablefor farmers to plant wheat. Some estimate that while wheat acreage is pro-jected to be up this fall, as much as 20 percent of the intended acreage insome areas wasn’t planted. As a result, farmers have corn and soybeans to look at for next year’s plant-

ing. In Michigan’s Thumb and Saginaw Valley, dry beans are also a possi-bility, and sugar beet acreage remains pretty constant, limited by processingcapacity and market conditions.

Given the range of challenges so far this fall, farmers will face some toughdecisions in 2015, Byrum acknowledged.

“The fact is that while this may be an adequate year for Michigan agricul-ture, options are limited for farmers as they start to think about 2015,” hesaid. “Prices, logistics and energy all pose critical challenges. Farmers at thispoint are ready to be done with this harvest so they can fully focus on nextyear’s challenges.”
