Attendance:
Each course is conducted five days per
week and full attendance is required. If, for
any reason, you are absent, staff must be
notified on the day, and a medical certificatesupplied where appropriate.
Supervision of Students:Students are supervised at all times
when in class. If they have any queries or
concerns, particularly concerns regardingsafety, staff are available to respond to
students. Security staff patrol the campus
throughout busy periods of the day and can
be contacted if needed.
Student Breaks:
Students receive one x 15 minute break inthe morning and one x 15 minute break in
the afternoon, as well as a 45 minute lunch
break. Students are advised not to leave the
campus during breaks and remain close to
Holmesglen during lunch break so they canreturn to class on time.
Industry Specific Subjects:
As an Occupational Health and Safety
requirement, some trade subjects requireyou to purchase overalls and safety boots.
Communication:
Parent-teacher meetings are held twice
per year. A progress interview is held in
June and a pathways interview is held inSeptember/October. Students are required
to attend with a parent or carer.
Assessments:
Students are assessed against the
competencies of the VCAL Foundation/
Certificate I in Transition Education/
Certificate I in Work Educationcourses. Teachers use both integrated
and explicit assessment.
A variety of assessment methods are used
in each course, appropriate to the learning
outcomes. These include:
Practical demonstration
Teacher observation records
and checklists
Reflective workbooks Oral questioning
Role play
Project/oral presentations
Written short answers Portfolio of evidence
Film making and DVD production
Photographic portfolio
Excursions:
Excursions take place throughout the year.Parents/carers are required to sign an
annual approval form at the start of the
course, permitting their son or daughter
to attend excursions. On excursion days,students are required to meet staff at the
campus and travel to the excursion venue as
a group. If a student wishes to travel home
from an excursion venue independently,written parental consent is required.
Camps:
Camps are held during the year. Attendance
is required as assessment tasks areundertaken on camps.
Driver Education:
Students interested in Pre-Licence DriverEducation will have the opportunity to
participate in a specialised safe driving
program with (METEC) at an approximate
additional cost of $235.
Application Process:Students must apply online through theHolmesglen website.
Selection Process:
You will be required to attend an interview
with staff and provide a referral from your
last school or education setting.
Information Evening:
An Information evening for parents/carers is
held in February.
Student Welfare:
Student welfare is a priority in the
Community and Transitional EducationDepartment at Holmesglen. Support is
available through: Teaching staff and mentor teachers

Student counsellor
Small class sizes (up to 11 students) Literacy and numeracy support
Specialist staff
Staff will liaise with parents,relevant professionals and agencies
where appropriate.

This vocational program provides you
with the skills to obtain and maintain
employment. Through project based learningand explicit teaching methods, you will
gain vital skills in the areas of; vocational
and job seeking skills, employability and
personal management skills, teamwork andcommunication skills.
In addition to studying Certificate I in Work
Education you can choose to study one ofthe following courses:
Certificate I in Hospitality Certificate I in Agrifood Operations
(Horticulture)
Certificate I in Retail Services.
You will also study core subjects such as
workplace literacy, workplace numeracy, workrelated skills and personal management.
Classes are held in small groups of ten;

Overview
The VCAL Foundation program is designedfor young people who require supportwith their learning and/or social skills.
You will learn a range of vocational,employability and personal developmentskills through hands on, project basedand explicit teaching methods.
The program focuses on the principles ofapplied learning, such as building on yourinterests, abilities and strengths; cateringfor different learning styles; promotingconfidence, resilience and active citizenship;experiential learning based on real lifesituations; and assessment methods thatsuit the learner and context of learning.
You will be able to study in groups of upto 11 with opportunities for literacy and/or numeracy support. You choose froma wide range of industry specific andcreative/personal development electives.Four weeks of practical placement furtherdevelop your employability skills. Youwill also attend a three day camp tofoster resilience and independence.

Projects are an integral part of the VCALFoundation program. Staff negotiateprojects with you based on your interestsand academic requirements. Forexample, a film can involve constructingprops, writing scripts, acting, narrating
and directing as well as filming.
Prior to camp you may organise activities,research and choose accommodation,organise meals and ensure the campmeets the allocated budget.
