January 2019
Gold Wing Road Rider s Association (GWRRA) Arizona Chapter E's Monthly Get-Together is the 1st Saturday of each month. The Get-Together is held at the Golden Corral Restau-rant located at S. Hwy 92 in Sierra Vista, AZ. Breakfast starts around 8:30 AM and the FUN begins at 9:30 AM.
The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is the
world's largest single-marque so-cial organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles and other
makes/models -- and some would say, the world's largest family.
Dedicated to our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA mem-bers enjoy the freedom of be-longing to a not-for-profit, non-religious and non-political or-ganization.
Chapter Directors for the Chapter E Cochise Wingers are Wayne and Wendy Stark. They can be reached at phone 520-226-6611or email: [email protected]

Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge
H appy New Year Cochise Wingers,
We congratulate Tom Jensen as your Chapter E
2019 Individual of the Year. Tom managed the chapter
store for longer than most can remember. As an awe-
some photographer, he supported our Hug-a-Bug fund-
raiser with terrific prints for door prizes/grand prizes (we
have won one of his prints and have it hanging in our
house). In addition, Tom was the tail gunner supporting
me (I rode point) during the 2018 Kartchner Caverns run
with Chapter D (27 bikes total). We also enjoy Tom's
tales of Yellowstone, some of which were in our newslet-
ters. Well done, Tom!
We also congratulate Ed & Bel Saffold as your Chapter E
2019 Couple of the Year. They have supported many of
the chapter's runs and events, with Ed serving as Assis-
tant Ride Coordinator and Bel serving as the chapter's
treasurer. Their contributions were also felt by their host-
ing of the chapter annual picnic (2nd year in row), their
entertainment (Bel sang at the Hug-a-Bug and elsewhere
for the chapter), and their great ideas were adopted for
chapter gatherings and the upcoming 2019 Hug-a-Bug
fundraiser. Way to go, Ed & Bel! Very well deserving!
We hope you had a great holiday season. We had some
surprises. First, our daughter, who is back living with us
while her hubby is on a military deployment, decorated
our house with outside Christmas lights and got a fresh
cut Christmas tree (honestly, we probably wouldn't have
these this year without her). Then, we had Wayne's older
brother and his wife over for lunch on Christmas Day
which was unplanned but very enjoyable. It was great to
catch up with family.
The Chapter Christmas Party, held at the Landmark Café,
was a success. There was great music provided by Ed &
Bel's friends (John & John). The meal was large (many
take-home containers were observed). However, in
Chapter E fashion, the tradition of stealing gifts still lives
on, as Cochise Wingers know how to put the "no" in
"noel." All kidding
aside, we hope you had
fun and thank you for
being there.
Cochise Wingers also had fun delivering two motorcycle
trailers full of Christmas presents to two families that
were facing hard times. We thank all Cochise Wingers
for your donations. We also greatly appreciate Gale and
her sister, Coleen, for the planning, and execution of this
"feel good" annual event. To pull off the event, the chap-
ter needed to select the family or families, purchase the
presents, wrap the presents, and then deliver the presents.
All who participated had a good ride (some with nicely
decorated bikes) and had a "memorable" lunch at Denny's
afterwards.
Going forward for 2019, the chapter greatly appreciates the continued support of members who have given their time and energy to help the chapter - - thank you and we hope you can keep supporting! However, the chapter needs more members to fill other roles and it greatly ap-preciates any help. Our current newsletter editor and chapter webmaster (yours truly for both) have been doing these two roles for the last four years. However, the de-mands of employment and serving as your chapter direc-tor leaves very little time to do anything else, including riding. So, this month's newsletter may be the last is-
sue until we have a new editor. I will update the web-site as time permits (or, much better, updated by a "new" chapter webmaster). The weekly email blasts remains as your most accurate source of chapter information and it has the phone numbers of the chapter team if you have any questions about a particular ride or event.

December Activities
Our 1st impromptu ride for the month was on the 5th to Douglas for lunch at the Gadsden Hotel. 6 bikes plus 1 co-rider rode down Hwy 92 to Hwy 80 to the Hotel Res-taurant. The return ride was on Hwy 80 to Hwy 191 then on to Davis Rd and Hwy 80 to Hwy 90 home.
That night 10 of our members went to Country House for a great dinner and visit.
Our Chapter Christmas Party was on the 9th at the Land-mark Cafe. We had 29 members and guests in attend-ance. We had a great meal and nice music. Then we played the steal-a-gift game. It was a great time and lots of fun.
On the 12th we had 10 bikes plus 2 co-riders ride to Sonoita to a new cafe called the Sky Island Cafe. It was very new and didn't even have printed menus, but the food was good. We went over and back on Hwy 90 and Hwy 82.
That night we had 13 members attend dinner at Olive Garden.
On the 15th we had 13 of our members dress up their bikes and don their Santa hats to deliver the presents we collected for the 2 families in St. David. They were all very happy and appreciative for the presents we gave them. They were so grateful that they could give their kids a nice Christmas.
Our next impromptu ride was a long one. 7 bikes plus 1 co-rider went to Safford to Jumbo's for a nice lunch. We went over on Hwy 90 to I-10 and onto Hwy 191 into Safford. We returned on on Hwy 191 to Hwy 266 into Willcox. Then went on to I-10 to Sybil Rd into St. Da-vid and on Hwy 80 to Tombstone and on Charleston Rd home.
That night 8 of us had dinner at My Place.
There was no impromptu ride on the 26th due to very cold weather.
That night 6 of us met at Hibachi Grill for a nice meal.
On the 1st of January a dozen of our members met with several members from Chapter A and Chapter G for our annual breakfast at Landmark. We had a great time vis-iting with our friends from Tucson and Green Valley.
Our last impromptu ride for the month was canceled due to several inches of snow on the ground. It was decided to meet at Cafe Ole' for breakfast. However, they were closed. So, our 5 members went to the Landmark Cafe for breakfast.
That night only 4 of us went to My Place for dinner.
On Friday the 4th our Social was at the Landmark where Bel was performing. 10 of us plus 6 visitors went for dinner and an evening of music and socialization.

H ello Fellow Wingers,
I see everyone made it through the holidays OK. We hope that the old fat man was good to all of you by bringing you all the safety chrome a person could hope for. I know a lot of us had family come in for the holiday. It's s good thing to have our families and loved ones around at this time of the year. Then of course just around the next corner the New Year came in with a bang. Gale and I had a wild time New Year's Eve by sitting around the house watching the tube. Thanks to the planning and work of Wendy and her helpers, our Christmas party was great. Also a big thank you should go out to the staff at the Landmark. Of course Wayne had a little to do with the success of the party. Congrat-ulations go out to those that received plaques for their travels, and a special recognition to our new Couple Of The Year, Ed and Bel Saffold, and Individual Of The Year, Tom Jensen. On the 15th we met at our house, then off to Benson to wait for a phone call. The call came and off we headed for St. David to deliver the goodies that were purchased for the two families. The the family's were grateful for everything we were able to put together for them. Thanks to Gale and her team for doing such a good job buying and wrapping gifts. Also a thanks to Gale's sister, Coleen, for finding and coordinating with Gale to meet the families. And last but not least, thanks to all those that jumped on their bikes and helped deliver the presents. Our first chapter gig of the year was to meet up with chapters A and G for our annual New Year Day Breakfast at the world famous Landmark Cafe. Again this year we had a good showing from all three chapters and an outstanding vis-it with our friends. Dave did a great job setting up rides for December. He really just got started when the weather hit us with a force. Now we will see where Mr. Ed (Saffold that is) will be sending us over the next few weeks. Thanks to all that have helped with our Wednesday ride plans. With your help you not only get to do a ride you want, but it helps to provide fresh ideas of where you might want to visit. I am looking forward to the continued support of the chapter. I am still working the weekend ride plans, so if you have an idea for a day run or a weekender, let Ed Saffold or me know. Remember to check out our Web Site or our Facebook site for the latest information available. It's unreal how much information you can find on these sites, some valuable and some you wish you had never seen. So Until Next Time: Ride Safe, Ride Often

Raced a Harley today
I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed to PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really twisting sections of canyon road with no straight sections to speak of and where most of the curves have warning signs that say "15 MPH". I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone. I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could catch him, but it wouldn't be easy. I concentrated on my braking and cornering. three corners later, I was on his fender. Catching him was one thing; passing him would prove to be another. Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the mountain. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I'd manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but when we came out he'd get on the throttle and out-power me. His horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me more determined than ever. My only hope was to outbrake him. I held off squeezing the lever until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before the road straightens out and he would pass me for good. But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see him in my rear-view mirror. Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles before he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I was no match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the tightest section of road, where bravery and skill count for more than horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him. though it was not easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the canyon and I had preserved the proud tradition of another of America's best bikes. I will always remember that moment. I don't think I've ever pedaled so hard in my life. And some of the credit must go to Schwinn, as well. They really make a great bicycle... Man, what a ride. (Submitted by Larry Howard)
Editor’s note: there are bicyclists that can give motorists and motorcyclists a run for their money going downhill. Just ride Mount Lemmon (just outside Tucson) - - elite bicyclists sometimes train there and they are fierce and fast going down the mountain!
