Home & Family Newsletter September 2017
President’s Corner
Hope all of you have had a great summer! Our summer has been very busy with visits,
and unexpected family concerns.
Hope you are ready for a fun filled and productive Ex-tension Homemaker year starting in September. We will be having interesting lessons, fun at our meetings, meeting new members and doing all the things that Extension Homemakers do all the time for ourselves and the community.
Enjoy the rest of the hot weather, stay cool, and brain-storm for new ideas for us to enjoy.

Extension Homemaker Week
Extension Homemaker week is October 1-7. We
will be looking for someone from each club to
record a radio spot with Barbara at WMJL.
Please let your President know at your Septem-
ber meeting if you are interested.
Leadership Development
Are you a volunteer? You may ask, what is a volun-
teer? An individual who agrees to do a job or per-
form a service for others (not family) for which the
only pay is the personal satisfaction of a job well
done. A volunteer can share time, knowledge, skills,
materials, etc. with others. A volunteer may be paid
or reimbursed for out of pocket expenses related to
volunteer work.
As Extension Homemakers we can fill out our VSU,
which is a record of an hour of volunteer effort.
These hours may include time spent in preparing to
carry out an activity as well as the hours spent direct-
ly involved in the community work.
It is extremely important to keep a track of your
VSU’s and submit them to your county chairman for
Leadership Development when you complete 500
hours.
When our local homemakers turn in their VSU’s by
the end of June they are sent to the State Homemak-
er Chairman for Leadership Development. You will
need 500 hours in a 2 year time span to receive
recognition at the State level. When all the volunteer
hours are compiled the people at UK look to see the
positive impact on their community, this in turn helps
promote our local office.
Also our VSU’s are evaluated for a set dollar amount
with the county and state government. Our VSU’s
are sent from the State Homemaker office to the
state and federal government where that dollar
amount may be evaluated and is helpful for our com-
munity to receive state/federal grants.
So members, don’t feel as if you are boasting when
you fill out your hours. Just remember VSU’s are ex-
tremely important.
For a full list of hours that qualify ask your club presi-
dent or Becky for them. - Norma Hunt
