background - consultation, ‘enquiry by design’ April - May 2014. Intensive public and stakeholder consultation centred around a ‘pop-up’ shopfront in Liebig street and consultation sessions culminating in the development of design concepts
1. Liebig Street will be clearly recognisable as the city’s Main Street. The design will reflect a hierarchy and priority above other City Centre Streets and be reflected in higher quality materials and a unique character.
2. The street profile and character will create a shared environment where vehicles are slowed and less dominant. The design will give higher priority to pedestrians, bicycles and other users of the street through more generous spaces, ease of access and legibility.
3. The physical arrangement of the street will make it adaptable and resilient. It will have the flexibility to cater for events and periodic changes as well as the ability to adjust to future trends and influences.
4. Liebig Street will have a strong north - south narrative. There will be an overall continuity articulated through materials, physical elements, art, lighting and interpretation of historic and cultural stories.
5. The design will create an environment conducive to activity and attracting people. It will be interesting, comfortable, hospitable and contain elements and features that encourage people to interact and spend more time in the space.
key design principles

Liebig Street - sound structure and planning principles
the typical street section
Ÿ reduction to 2 traffic lanes (one direction each way)
Ÿ retain angle parking typically (45 degree retained)
Ÿ bicycle’s on road - shared with traffic lane
Ÿ broader footpath (approx. 2m increased) allowing for clear thoroughfare +trading / activity zone
Ÿ typically at-grade (flush kerb)
Ÿ overall continuity in the pavement language to re-inforce a shared character - with subtle differentiation between key zones and passage of movement
Ÿ new street tree planting
