History
■ In the late 1800’s, George Wellington “Cap” Streeter came to Chicago with his second wife to test their boat they were going to take to Honduras to be gunrunners. Their boat got stuck in a storm and the two decided to stay in Chicago and claim the sandbar area where his boat wrecked.
■ After the Chicago Fire, Streeter illegally charged people to dump their waste from the fire in the area.
■ Authorities attempted to evict Streeter and his wife from the area but were met with a small army of rifles and Streeter stayed.
■ In 1921, when the Michigan Avenue Bridge was built, it made Streeterville the top real estate area in Chicago.
■ The building of the Hancock Center and Water Tower Place let to a population boom in Streeterville that is still booming today.
