Definition of Interoperability

• The ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort on the part of the customer

• Two approaches: – Adhere to published interface standards – Make use of a "broker" of services that can convert one product's

interface into another product's interface "on the fly"

5

• Technical: the lack of interoperable telehealth standards and equipment

• Regulatory: safety regulations hamper the creation of multi-vendor solutions

• Financial: economic value has proven difficult to demonstrate to hospitals, vendors, and consumers

Barriers to Interoperability

Connectivity Considerations Sensors and Data • What data do you need to gather? • Does the equipment already have the

required sensors built in?

Power • What is the amount of data needed? • How frequently will the data be

collected?

Security • Protecting the data at collection, in

transit and on the application.

Network Connection • What connection option best fits your

application? • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth™, cellular and more.

Analytics • Data needs to be converted to useful

information. • What is it exactly that your users want

to know?

Starkey SurfLink® Mobile Challenge • Hearing aid patients cannot effectively talk

on smartphones • Current hearing aids stream audio via a

secondary relay device typically worn around the patients’ neck

• Find a solution that eliminates the need for a body worn relay device

Starkey SurfLink Mobile Solution • Mobile transmitter solution that wirelessly

connects with Bluetooth-enabled smartphones

• Create a new look, icons and ergonomics, to meet expectations of today’s consumers

• Antenna – small in size without compromising quality

• Communication between mobile phone and SurfLink mobile – 30ft. Bluetooth range

Starkey SurfLink Mobile Results • SurfLink Mobile is a remote microphone, assistive listening

device, and hearing aid remote control - all in one. • Audio streaming for other Bluetooth-capable devices is

also possible, allowing the hearing aids to act as highly customized headphones.

• Available in 17 countries and has opened up the smartphone market to millions of hearing aid patients.

• In 2013, SurfLink Mobile won a Red Dot Design Product Design Award and was a CES Innovations Design & Engineering Award Honoree.
