We begin on Wednesday by exploring our backdrop. Wherebetter to look at the making o place in the Knowledge Age than
NewcastleGateshead - a totemic bridging o distinct communities that
links past industry with current innovation, and an ancient pre-English
culture with 21st century identity. The area that has spawned the electric
lamp, Stephensons engines, and many mining and industrial inventions has
much to teach us. Today it boasts leading stem cell, cancer and sub-sea
technologies, as well as an identity reborn with culture - expressed in icons
such as the BALTIC Centre or Contemporary Art, The Sage Gatesheadand The Angel o the North.
On Thursday we join leading academics and contributors rom the private
and public sectors to explore the themes o Culture, Science and Place.
How can science and the creative arts add to the richness and liveability
o contemporary places? Are there tensions and trade-os; winners and
losers? How does it aect the physicality o place? We round the day o
with a dinner at the Discovery Museum, to celebrate the nominees orThe Urbanism Awards 2010.
The fnal morning provides an opportunity to participate in the Academys
Core Programmes: UniverCities, City X-Rays and KnowyourPlace and
concludes with a picnic at The Angel o the North - a ftting fnale, not to
be missed!
