(Family Features) Extreme weather over thesummer left a lot of lawns and landscapesshowing signs of damage. With some time, patience and work, it's possible to get youryard back in order and ready for the winter.Signs of typical summer wear and tear on
lawns were amplified as they were stressedby the above-normal temperaturesexperienced across the United States," saidBen Hamza, Ph.D., director of technicaloperations at TruGreen, the nation's largestprofessional lawn care service. "Fall is theideal time to nurture lawns and landscapesto help ensure your yard's health for spring."Assess - Thoroughly walk your property
and inspect the lawn, trees and shrubs. Notepatchy areas, where grass has thinned out oris in need of valuable nutrients and appearsas light green. Also look for weed and plantpest infestations and overgrown trees andshrubs, especially those with the potential forinterfering with roof and power lines.Consider a qualified expert, such asTruGreen, to properly gauge your lawn andlandscape needs.Replace - Fall is the right time to seed bare
lawn areas and overseed existing grass toimprove lawn thickness and density. After adetailed inspection of your lawn's troublespots, your TruGreen specialist couldrecommend one of several reseedingtechniques:Spot Seeding - fills in small areas that are
thin or infested with weeds.Overseeding - generally used for larger
areas where the turf is thin, but not bare.
Slit Seeding - a premium service using aspecialized machine to cut slits into the soiland sow turf seeds directly into the slits.
Lightly rake an inch of surface soil toremove dead debris and properly prepare thearea for seeding. Choose a grass seed that isthe same type as the grass already growing inyour lawn. Lightly apply seed to the soilsurface and gently pack to firm the seed intothe soil. Apply a light layer of straw or seedingmulch to encourage rapid seed germination.Water lightly until the seed has fully emerged.Do not apply crabgrass preventive to newlyseeded areas of your lawn.
Feed - Fall feeding gives roots of lawns, trees and shrubs the energy needed toprepare for a healthy spring green revival. Besure to keep fertilizer on target to prevent run-off. Using a trained specialist, such asTruGreen, for insect and disease controlmeasures customized to your region will helptrees and shrubs thrive. If you fertilize your
own lawn, make sure you read and follow theproduct directions and sweep all fertilizergranules that may reach pavement back ontoyour lawn.
Maintain - Throughout the fall, there arethings you can do to maintain your yard'sappearance and health:
Rake and clean. Keeping leaves and debriscleared off your lawn will keep your lawnhealthier.
Continue to clear away debris that canbecome matted and damage your lawn.
Inspect your landscape mulch in the fall.Clean up beds, refresh mulch and make surethat no more than two to three inches ofmulch remains in the beds.
Do not walk on frost-covered lawns. Doingso may cause brown footprints to appearlater. These footprints may remain visible untilspring green-up begins.

Shorter days and coolernights mean more time spent indoors. Formany Americans, this is the perfect seasonto take simple steps toward a cleaner andmore efficient home.
According to a recent survey by theCleaning Institute Organization, 96 percentof people think it's very important to have aclean home. But with family obligations, busywork schedules and extracurricular activities,
we sometimes fall short. Here are someuseful tips to help prepare your home for theindoor months ahead, making it a fresherand more enjoyable place to be.
Check the perimeter. Carefully inspectthe perimeter of your house. Check windowframes and entryways, since you may needto re-caulk and add additional weather strips.Clear gutters and chimneys of debris. Besure to check for insects when putting away
items such as garden hoses, outdoor toysand potted plants.
Store outdoor furniture. Before you storelawn or patio furniture, scrub each piecethoroughly with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda- this natural cleaning method means thatyou won't need to worry about harshchemicals washing off onto your lawn.Baking soda can also be used to eliminateodors from seat cushions or remove thegrease from the grill before the off-season.
Wash and weatherize windows. Cleanwindow panes with a simple solution ofvinegar and water, which removes the dirtand grime left behind from winds andrainstorms. Then, place storm windowssecurely on each frame to help keep yourhouse cozy and warm throughout the coldermonths.
Remember to deodorize. Even if it's toocold to open the windows, you'll want yourhome to smell fresh and clean. Baking Sodais a great option for neutralizing unpleasantodors - from the refrigerator and freezer tothe carpets and furniture. Sprinkle it in sportsbags, gym shoes, waste baskets, diaperpails and drains.
Shine your floors. With allergies on therise, it's important to pay special attention tothe floors - use a product that will cleandeep-down to get rid of the pollen and dirtthat is frequently tracked into the home. Don'tforget to clean baseboards, corners, stairs,in-between the banister spindles, and otherhard-to-reach locations where dust oftenbecomes trapped.
Unpack cold weather wear. You carefullyput away all sweaters and winter jackets lastspring, but that doesn't mean they haven'tbeen in contact with dust mites. Rememberto launder clothing before returning it to yourclosets, and take this opportunity to washcurtains and other fabric coverings. Add onecup of Baking Soda to the wash for an addedboost when trying to remove tough dirt andodors.
For more helpful tips on using BakingSoda around the home, visitwww.armandhammer.com.

As the thermometer drops, the cost of heatingyour home will rise. But you can avoid a spike in yourblood pressure with a few smart moves that will helpyou save on those energy bills.
The average American household spends atleast $2,000 a year on energy bills -- over half ofwhich goes to heating and cooling, according to theU.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy StarProgram.
Luckily, there are several ways you can save onyour energy bills this season:
Install a programmable thermostat to helpensure that you do not forget to adjust thetemperature in your home throughout the day.Regulating your thermostat can amount to realsavings while keeping you warm during the wintermonths.
When replacing appliances around your homeremember to ask about natural gas models. Naturalgas water heaters and other appliances are typicallymuch more efficient than other versions and will helpcut energy costs during the winter heating season.
Make sure to have all furnaces, flues andchimneys in your home or business inspected everyyear by qualified industry professionals to ensuretheir efficiency and safety. These are items that willno doubt be kicked into gear during the cold wintermonths, so it’s important they’re all in working orderwhen the temperatures drop.
Keep the areas around all natural gas
appliances clean and unblocked to allow for properair flow.
Don’t forget to insulate your attic floor.Installation should be 16 to 24 inches deep intemperate climates. This simple home improvementwill keep you warmer in the winter and cooler in thesummer.
Look for the blue flame. If pilot lights andburners have a steady, blue flame, they are operatingcorrectly. (Decorative gas fire logs are the onlyexception. Their flame is usually yellow.)
Anytime you make changes to your home, fromservicing a fuel-burning appliance to changing yourwindows, always have a licensed expert make surethat all your equipment is operating properly -- safetyis important all year round.
For more information on how you can save onhome energy bills, visitwww.comfortableresponsible.org.
Just a few of these changes will help reduceyour impact on the planet -- and your wallet.

Does your home feel drab or dark? Are you tired of the sameold rooms and color schemes?
There are many easy, cost-effective ways to brighten yourhome’s appearance, cheering up its occupants in the process.
From fresh coats of paint to sunny lighting schemes to livelywindow treatments, small changes can have a big impact on
your home. And some projects can be tackled injust one short weekend.
Window Treatments - By literally lettingmore light into your home, you can make yourdays more cheerful. Try replacing heavy drapesor dark colored shades with translucent curtainsor blinds. This way, you let in natural light whilekeeping prying eyes at bay.
Other ways to invite natural light into yourhome include adding internal windows withinrooms to let light flow from one space to another,or installing skylights.
Energy-Efficient Accents - Your lightingscheme can set different moods in differentrooms. To make a room both cheerful andefficient, use three different types of lighting:ambient -- or background -- lighting, task lightingand accent lighting. Stylish new options forbackground lighting abound, such as pendants, chandeliers, ceiling-mounted lights and new
kinds of fixtures that can be hung in multiple ways.LED lighting is perfect to illuminate places for reading, food
preparation, dressing or other tasks. With a very long lifespan, such lights may never need to be replaced and can save youmoney on electricity bills because they are brighter with lower
wattage. The latest in accent lighting includes strings of remarkably
thin LED light pods that can easily bend around corners and fitinto small spaces, such as those from manufacturers likeKichler Lighting. This type of sleek, modern lighting adds dramawhen entertaining, while also lowering electricity costs.
“Accent lights like these use little energy so they can stay onall night, an added plus for homes with small children or whenovernight guests visit,” says Jeff Dross, Kichler Lighting’sCorporate Director of Education and Industry Trends. “No twohomes are alike and their lighting shouldn’t be either.”
Warmth and Color - Liven up rooms by selecting a brightcolor scheme. Paint sets the basic tone, so choose a light color, such as inviting yellows or cheery pastels. Remember, darkcolors can absorb light and make rooms darker. You can paintan entire room a bright color or just one wall.
And you can add warmth as well as color by layering onpillows and throws to accent favorite pieces of furniture.
For more creative home decorating ideas, visit the AmericanSociety of Interior Designers at www.asid.org and click on“Consumer Center.” And for new energy-efficient home lightingideas, visit www.kichler.com.
The brighter you make your home, the more cheerful it willbecome for you and your guests.

OPEN MY EYES THAT I MAY SEE“Lo, I am with you always…” – Jesus
Matthew 28:20
During times of suffering and loss it is normalto ask, “Where was God when …?” Even ourLord asked it. On the cross, Jesus prayed “Whyhave you forsaken me?”
Questioning the presence of God isnever God’s issue, but our issue. After all,God by nature is omnipresent (everywherepresent- Read Psalm l39). There have beenmany times, in a given situation, when God waspresent but we did not see Him. We have saidwith Jacob of old “Surely the Lord is in thisplace- and I was not aware of it!”(Genesis 28:l6).Someone suggested a modern day version,“God was here and I was out to lunch!”
There are many reasons for missing thepresence of God. Self-preoccupation … beingtoo caught up in the situation at hand … lack offaith … pessimism … doubt. More often thannot it is simply a case of spiritual blindness.
There’s the story of a man who was trappedin his house during a flood. When the watercame up to his front porch, a boat came by to
take him to safety, but the man refused saying“No, I will stay here. I have faith in God and Godwill save me.”
When the floodwaters got to the second floorof the house, a second boat came to get theman. “No,” the man said, “I will stay here. I havefaith in God and God will save me.”
Later the water was so high, the man wasstranded on the roof. When a helicopter came, the man again said “No, I will stay here. I havefaith in God and God will save me.”
The man died and went to heaven.Immediately, he demanded an answer fromGod, “Lord, I had faith in you. Why didn’t yousave me?” God replied, “Look, I sent two boatsand a helicopter. What more did you expect?”During times of questioning, we might join theprayer of the hymn writer, “Open my eyes, thatI may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me;place in my hands the wonderful key thatshall unclasp and set me free.” (Clara H. Scott, l895)
