Ve’ahavtaderivesitsnameandmissionfromtheTorah’scommandment,“ve’ahavtal’rayachakamocha”—loveyourneighborasyouwouldloveyourself.Itisourobligationandprivilegetoreachoutwithcompassiontothosewhoaremostvulnerableregardlessofrace,religion,ornationality.Ve’ahavta’sinnovativeprogramsaimtobreakbarriers,restorehumandignity,fosterinclusivity,andempowermarginalizedindividualstobreakthecycleofpovertyandfulfilltheiruniquehumanpotential.

THETRAGEDYOFHOMELESSNESSINCANADAPovertyisthemajorcontributortohomelessnessinCanada.Therearetwodistinctgroupsofhomelesspeople:thosewhoaretemporarilyhomeless,thetransitionalhomeless,andthosewhoarechronicallyhomelessandlivingonthestreetsformorethanoneyear.ThisisasnapshotofthetragedyonCanada’sStreets:

ABOUTTHECOMMUNITYMEALPROGRAM:

Ve’ahavta’sCommunityMealProgramprovideshomelessandmarginalizedindividualsinTorontowithawarmandnutritiousmealatoneofourpartneragencies.EachyearVe’ahavtaprovidesapproximately2,000individualswith15communitymealsservedbystaffandalmost100volunteers.Thisprogramisuniqueasitgivesgueststhedignityofsittingdownattableandbeingserved,ratherthanliningupforfood.Itoffersavitalsenseofbelonging,safety,andconnection.Forvolunteers,itisauniqueopportunitytomakeadifferenceinthelivesofthedisadvantaged,byreachingouttothemwithcompassionateunderstanding.
