OnJan.13Washingtongov.Christinegregoireissuedacongratulatoryproclamation,andonJan.27,u.S.Rep.JimMcDermottofSeattleintroducedaresolutionintheHouseofRepresentativesrecognizingNorthwestKidneyCenters’50thanniversary.eachhonoredthesignificantcontributionswehavemadetothedialysisfieldsinceweopenedourdoorsin1962.

asastaffmember,whatinspiresyoutogivetoNorthwestKidneyCenters?Inshort,theworthinessofthecause.theneedisgreat–Iseeitonadailybasis.IalsoseehowtheneedisbeingmetwithexceptionalcareandcompassionbyallofushereatNorthwestKidneyCenters.Itisinspiring,anddonatingisagreatwaytoacknowledgetheimportanceofthatwork.

Donatingtomyworkplaceisalsoaneasywayformetobeconfidentthatmycontributionisbeingwellspent.Ihaveaninsideperspectiveonourcultureofstewardshipandservice.IseethegoodworkthatisbeingdoneatNorthwestKidneyCentersonadailybasis,soIknowcharitableresourcesarebeingusedefficiently.

Doyoudirectyourgiftstoaspecificfund?IusedtodirectmygiftstocharitycarebecauseIwantedmycontributionstodirectlybenefitthepatientsthatIencountereveryday.Morerecently,Ihavedirectedmygiftstowheretheneedisgreatest.

Ofcourse,Istillwantmycontributionstobenefitpatientsneedingcharitycare,butItrustNorthwestKidneyCenterstoallocatemygiftsinthemosteffectivewaypossible.

anewserviceforcaregiversofperitonealdialysis(PD)patientswillbegininMarch,thankstoagen-erousmemorialgiftfromCarrieBowman.Carrie,whosehusband,PhilipJohnson,wasaPDpatient,madethegifttoproviderespiteforfamilymembersofPDpatients.

agiftinspiredbypersonalexperiencePDusuallyworksbestwiththefullparticipationofafamilymember,friendorcaregiver.InCarrie’scase,shewasabletohavesomeonetrainedtoassistherhusbandwithhishomedialysistreatments,whichinturngaveherabreakfromconstantcareneartheendofhislife.asaresult,CarrieidentifiedanunmetneedwithinNorthwestKidneyCenters.

SoinDecember2011,CarrieestablishedthePhilipB.JohnsonMemorialIntermittentPeritonealDialysisFund.thefundwillbeusedtoprovidePDtreatmentsatourSeattleandRentoncentersinsteadofathome;itwillalsohelpwithpatienttransportationtoaccesstheservice.

“BecauseIbelievethattheparticipationofacaregiverisessentialandalsothatexhaustionandburnoutareveryrealissues,IwantedtofacilitateaprogramtoprovidethemrespitebyprovidingassistancetoPDpatientsduringcaregiverab-sences,”Carriesaid.
