This is Lisa.
Lisa works in manufactoring.

This is Brad.
Brad works in product development.
![Page 4: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Both work for a large supplier of the automotive industry.
![Page 5: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Lisa and Brad work6,000 miles away from each other…
![Page 6: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
… and are busy with the same problems.
![Page 7: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
They don‘t know each other.
![Page 8: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
But they should.
![Page 9: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
That‘s actually this man‘s job: Klaus is the knowledge manager.
![Page 10: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

Klaus tried everything to bring Lisa and Brad together…
![Page 11: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
…but it didn‘t help very much.
![Page 12: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Is that Lisa‘s or Brad‘s fault?
![Page 13: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
No.
![Page 14: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Because both are happy to share their knowledge...
![Page 15: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
We all like to share knowledge…
![Page 16: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
…if we get the right audience.
![Page 17: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
More than 80 % of all web users who create content say that the they do it because they like to communicate and exchange information with other people.

Positive feedback from others is important.
![Page 19: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
That promotes our status as experts.
![Page 20: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
However without an audience, we are not motivated…
![Page 21: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
…and we don‘t know the context in which our knowledge is used.
We only know what we know when we need to know it.
We always know more than we can tell and we always tell more than we can write.

The old knowledge management didn‘t care.
1. Write your knowledge into a database.
2. Find an adequate level of detail.
3. Maybe somebody will use your knowledge some day. And… maybe not.
4. Don‘t spend too much of your time on this!
![Page 23: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
It‘s no surprise that Lisa has to set priorities.
I don‘t know if anybody will ever need my knowledge.I don‘t know how somebody will use my knowledge.I‘d rather take care of really important things.
![Page 24: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
The old knowledge management doesn‘t work, because it...
• …defines knowledge as a transferable good, which is centrally provided.
• …demands knowledge-sharing without providing an audience.
• …wants to manage knowledge.
![Page 25: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

Klaus loves the Wikipedia!
![Page 31: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
He is astonished by the huge number of blogs on the internet…
![Page 32: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
... and he jumps at his chance.

Social Software…
... makes knowledge management
successful!
![Page 36: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
WRONG!
![Page 37: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Social Software is (unfortunately)
just a tool...
![Page 38: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Sure it is easier, more intuitive, and looks better – but it won‘t guarantee an audience either.
![Page 39: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Social Software in your business…1. Write your knowledge into a database, into
the wiki, a blog, [or other Social Software tool]….
2. Find an adequate level of detail.
3. Maybe somebody will use your knowledge some day. And… maybe not.
4. Don‘t spend too much of your time on this!
![Page 40: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
„But it works on the web…“

Sure, but just 1 % of all web users create the majority of content.

The 90-9-1
Rule
1 % of web users create the majority of content.
9 % of web users comment and tag information.
90 % of web users only consume information.
![Page 42: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
How many of your employees are the 1%?
![Page 43: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
How many of your most important but busy experts will be part of this one percent?
?
![Page 44: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Sorry, Klaus…
![Page 45: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
… but that is not knowledge management!
![Page 46: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Social Media vs. Knowledge Management: A Generational War. http://enterprise2blog.com/2008/09/social-media-vs-knowledge-management-a-generational-war/
“Knowledge Management and Social Media look very similar on the sur face, but
are actually radically different at multiple levels, both cultural and technical, and are locked in an undeclared cultural war
for the soul of Enterprise 2.0.“
![Page 47: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
1. Sharing knowledge is always voluntary, no one can ever be forced.
2. We share knowledge when we have the right audience, that motivates us and creates the right context.
3. Social Software alone is not the solution to the old problems of knowledge management.
![Page 48: Collab network1](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051322/5441a1d1afaf9f5e208b4773/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
Will Brad and Lisa ever find each other?
