COINS EXCAVATED AT CORINTH, 1978-1980

(PLATES 39-40)

N THE YEARS 1978, 1979, and 1980, excavations were carried out in two areas of the Corinthian Forum: at its southwest corner (Punic Amphora Building, South Stoa's west

end, etc.) and near its east side (Racecourse, Parabolic Terrace, etc.). The results of those investigations have been published by the excavations' director.1 This report deals with the coins. It comprises a detailed catalogue of the coins themselves and a list of the more important stratified finds. In all, 892 coins were discovered out of which it has been possible to identify 452 pieces. The breakdown by category is as follows:

Greek Corinth ......... 173 (54 imperial) Other States ......... 78 (9 imperial) Uncertain ........ 27 (8 imperial)

Roman ......... 72 Byzantine ........ 96 (3 Latin) Frankish ......... 6

TOTAL 452

As the chart shows, the coins are of predominantly Greek mintage, smaller numbers representing the Roman and Byzantine periods. The finds also include 6 coins of the Franks.

The stratigraphic list is selective. It includes coins taken from the more significant Hellenistic and Classical strata but leaves out most of the Roman and Byzantine material. Of special interest among the earlier contexts are those underlying the Roman Marble Paving (Units XI-XVIII) at the east end of the Forum, as well as those situated beneath the South Stoa (Units VIII-X) and beneath the destruction layer of the Punic Amphora Building (Unit VI) at the southwest. As usual, the coin groups are identified by the numbered "lots" used in the Corinth records.

In preparing this report, I have made extensive use of Joan E. Fisher's notes on the 1978 coins. The two silver pieces 78-141 and 78-550, here summarily entered (Nos. 3, 4), will be more fully described in Miss Fisher's forthcoming article on silver coins found at Corinth. I thank her for permission to include them in the present compilation. I also wish to thank Ino loannides and Lenio Bartziotes, excavation photographers, for their patience and care in dealing with some particularly trying coins (Pls. 39, 40).

NOTES

(11-12) These two coins are related, but their attribution to Corinth seems improbable. They are seldom found locally (e.g. Hesperia 41, 1972, p. 179, no. 23; Hesperia 53, 1984, p. 228, no. 56), and I know of no published examples marked with the Corinthian ethnic. In fact, No. 11 has a tiny 3 inscribed beneath the Pegasos (P1. 39), as does its duplicate in the British Museum, and a close parallel at the American Numismatic Society (with ?). The I or 3 certainly do not suggest Corinth. The letter on No. 12 cannot be read. On account of their Corcyreanlike controls (K, 0, Grapes, Kantharos, etc.) Postolaka gives the two issues to Corcyra in his book, KarTaXoyosT TriV apXaLoV VzO/Lao-/LaTcoV TrV V71oV KEpKvpas, AEVKa0os9,

K.T.A., Athens 1868, nos. 238-246, and to judge from recent excavation finds on that island his attribution may well be correct. Professor T. Hackens has told me that among the Pega- sos/Trident bronzes discovered on Corfu (excepting those clearly marked "Leukas") at least half belong to the K, 0 group. It is thus unlikely that our coins have anything to do with Corinth. Additional excavation material will be needed, however, before we know whether the issues are in fact Corcyrean. (Note. Coin No. 12 is part of lot 1979-77 dated by pottery in the laterfifth century B.C.; Stratigraphic Unit IV, p. 184 above. Also associated withfifth- century contexts are three other coins of the Pegasos/Trident variety in lots 1978-52, 1978-78, and 1979-76; Stratigraphic Units, IV, VI, p. 184 and Williams, Hesperia 48, 1979, p. 113 [pottery]. Exact chronologies notwithstanding, I have listed all these coins in the Catalogue under the conventional brackets 400-146 B.C.)

(54) This rare variety is listed in W. M. Leake, Numismata Hellenica: A Collection of Greek Coins, London 1854, p. 40 (last unnumbered item), where the busts are identified simply as Caius and Lucius and the legends are given as COR for the obverse and CAE.... (here .... EM) for the reverse. B. Head assigned the issue to the duoviral pair Primus-Hipparchus, but now Michel Amandry gives it to the Peregrinus-Labeo group (letter of 7/22/1981). A variant with Pegasos r. is reported by J. Fisher in Hesperia 43, 1974, p. 300, no. 40.

(60) Published examples of the issue give the first duovir's name as "Flam". The new Corinth find 80-162 seems, however, to provide a rare expanded version, FLAIN[I]NY[S, thus probably justifying Head's restoration in Historia Nummorum, 2nd ed., p. xlii. The rare inscription is situated beneath Helios' head and reads from the coin's rim inward (P1. 39).

(68) Coin 79-124 has two countermarks: hand on the obverse, and head r. on the reverse. On the basis of the first mark (hand) and the flan's shape and weight (8.48 g., worn), this could be an issue of the duoviri Aeficius and Julius (Caesar head/Bellerophon variety). But the reverse stamp is unusual for this early period: MacDowall, "Countermarks of Early Imperial Corinth," NC, 7th ser., vol. 2, 1962, pp. 113-115.

(70) The counterstamp on this coin of Septimius Severus consists of a male head, bearded, lau- reate, set in a round incuse (see CopSNG, no. 360). The imperial coins of Corinth circulating locally are seldom countermarked, except in the later period when the male head is particu- larly in evidence. A sample of 18 coins so stamped, culled from the Corinth collection, gives the following distribution by emperor: M. Aurelius (1), Commodus (3), S. Severus (9), Cara- calla (2), Plautilla (3).

204 ORESTES H. ZERVOS

(74) There is an obscure object, probably a symbol, in the field behind the right-hand boxer (P1. 39).

(84) The inscription, TA- NA- F.... -QN, breaks differently than it does in the BMC refer- ence. The countermark is a caduceus and appears on the obverse.

(85) For the date of this issue, see 0. Picard, Chalkis et la Confederation Eubee'nne, Etude de numismatique et d'histoire (IVe-Ie siecle), Athens 1975, table facing p. 355.

(96) Coin 78-44 (P1. 39) is possibly Warren 2.32 (99) Warren 4.A2.

(101) These coins seem to fall into two stylistic categories: Warren 4.C7.a (coin 78-381) and 4.C7.b (coins 78-266, 80-5). 78-381 has two parallel chisel marks on its surface apparently dealt in an attempt to cut it in half.

(103) Possibly Warren 6.B2. (104-108) All these coins are category Warren 8; their wreaths tie as follows:

No. 104: wreath ties right (P1. 39) No. 105: " above (P1. 39) No. 106: " below No. 107: " above No. 108: above

(118) The obverse inscription identifies this issue as Julia Domna's (IOYAIA AYG.... ) but the likeness seems to be Plautilla's. The inscription is probably correct but the likeness wrong. Coins of the Greek imperial period with "incorrect portraits" have been recorded before, and the present find (P1. 40) is yet another example (for instances in other mints, see K. Harl, ANSMN 26, 1981, pp. 165-167).

(121) Possibly vAulSNG 8108 with KNI API -TO[KAE]. (154) Weight of half, 3.96 g. (1 58A)Weight of half, 3.24 g. (171) The FEL TEMP REPARATIO coin 79-101 is from Antioch, officina F, series M (cf. LRBC II,

2637); the SPES REIPVBLICE coin 79-86 is a Constantinopolitan issue, probably of the series with "branch" (cf. LRBC II, 2053).

(173) There is a "dot" or a "star" in front of the mintmark, as in RIC IX, p. 147, 14b (x, xi) which, however, lists for this issue only officinae B and F. On our coin the officina letter is blurred but almost certainly an A.

(178) Reverse legend effaced. (179) RIC IX, p. 234, 86a mentions only officinae B and F for this issue. (184) This little bronze seems to be an imitation of the VIRTVS EXERCITI type struck in the East

for Arcadius and Honorius (A.D. 395-408). It differs from the regular emission by its small size and lack of reverse inscription (cf. LRBC II, 1992). My thanks to J. P. C. Kent for information on this coin.

(185) The emperor's name is illegible, but the reverse letters SM can be associated with certain western emissions of Honorius. The letters themselves, read Sisciana Moneta, also identify the place of issue: see LRBC II, p. 69.

(195) The preserved part of the obverse legend is garbled, .... LUos'sciflAn.... It also lacks the customary break at the end of Basil's name, because of the arrangement of the imperial figures on the coin (P1. 40).

(197) Struck over Leo VI (undertype as No. 196, above). (198) Struck over Romanus I (undertype as No. 197, above).

(199) Probably struck over Romanus I (undertype as No. 197, above). (200) Probably struck over Constantine VII (undertype as No. 198, above). (201) Coin 78-32 is cut down to a greatly decreased diameter, possibly for use as a jewelry

ornament. Coin 79-322, which is extremely damaged, seems to be struck over an anonymous follis of Class I, under or over which are to be seen traces of yet another follis (Class H or J).

(202b) A pellet above the iota of the reverse BASILC'1'. (203) Coin 78-9 is struck over a follis of Class A2. Coin 78-72 is cut down. (205) Both folles are overstruck, 78-6 over Class C and 78-206 over Class B. The reverse ornaments

on the first coin are undecipherable; those on the other coin are of variety "class Da" noted in DOC III, ii, p. 687.

(206) Probably struck over Class E. (207) Coin 78-35 is the remaining section of a quartered piece (P1. 40). 78-111 and 78-122 are

overstruck but their undertypes are not decipherable. (208) All three coins are overstruck: 78-21 probably over a follis of Michael VII (undertype as

DOC III, ii, p. 818, no. 14), 78-112 over a follis of the present Class I. On coin 78-19 the un- dertypes are almost totally obliterated. In all three examples the flans are very thin.

(209) Coin 78-64 seems to be struck over Nicephorus III (undertype as No. 201, above). Coin 78-121 is paper thin, and the traces of the types suggest a contemporary imitation.

(210) Overstruck coins: 78-108, 78-114. (211) Tetartera 78-28 and 79-77 are struck over folles of Class J and K respectively. (212) The three coins are overstruck as follows: 78-48 over an Alexius tetarteron (undertype as

No. 210, above); 78-107 over a follis of Class K; and 78-93 over an undecipherable issue. Another coin, 79-321, not overstruck, is very thin and has letters AX, A, slanted as in Hendy, pl. 8:12.

(217b) Weight of fragment, 1.95 g. (218) Coin 78-61 has a L(Latin letter?) engraved over the intersection of the cross arms, on the

reverse, above the 11 (P1. 40). (221) No legends preserved. For the attribution of this fraction to Isaac II, see J. Fisher,

Hesperia 45, 1976, p. 143, no. 51, where two similar finds are cited: (a) 1.93 g., 1975-141; (b) 0.80 g., 111/10/34.
