The Titan Crane is one of the most famous landmarks in Clydebank. It is 150 feet tall and weighs 800 tonnes. It was used for lifting heavy items when the Clyde was used for ship building.
The Titan Crane
The crane was built in 1907 and used until the ship yard was closed in 2001. In 2007 it was upgraded and was opened to members of the public. Today tourists can look at Clydebank from the top of the crane and there is also a shipbuilding museum at the bottom of the crane.

The CanalThe Forth and Clyde canal which runs from Edinburgh to Glasgow runs through Clydebank. In recent years the canal became very dirty and unattractive so there has been a big project to clean up the water and the surrounding area.
The famous Clydebank Fish & Chip take away boat is on the canal. As well as customers visiting the restaurant passing boats can get their lunch from the “sail thru” part of the boat!

Clydebank BlitzIn March 1941 Clydebank was
devastated by two German air raids. The town was largely destroyed,
over 500 people were killed and over 600 people were injured. Out of
12,000 homes only 7 were undamaged and 35,000 people were
left homeless.
It took many years for the town to be rebuilt.
There are two war memorials in
Clydebank dedicated to those who lost
their lives.

John Brown’s Shipyard
John Brown’s shipyard was a major part of life in old Clydebank. Many important ships such as the Q.E2 were built in Clydebank. The yard was built in 1871 and employed many of the local men into the shipbuilding trade. When shipbuilding declined the yard was used for building oil rigs and North Sea platforms until it finally closed in 2001.
