SUMMARY
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Kunchok Dorje, a teacher at Karang (Ch. Galeng) Township Central School, received the clothes and toys in
December 2010. Chubsang Village residents are Tibetan farmers cultivating highland barley, wheat,
rapeseed, and potatoes. Some households keep a small number of goats, cows, yaks, and pigs. This
livelihood is for subsistence. In summer, most laborers leave to the village to puruse cash income as
construction workers. Expenses such as sending children to schools, especially higher level education, and
medical treatment are significant expenditures.
The clothes were collected and counted by the village committee, and then equally divided among villagers.
Each household received 16 pieces on average. For this mpoverished village, these clothes were a
much-appreciated gifts in cold winter.

TRANSLATION
Dear Donors,
We are Xingzhuang Village in Gonghe Township. The 27 recipients express gratitude to you for your kind
donation of clothing. As a farming village in Gonghe Township, Xinghzuang Village has low farming yields
that only meet the needs of local villagers. Thus, for the 5 families, your donation relieved the burden of
purchasing new clothes and avoid the cold this winter. We again say thank you very much and wish all your
dreams come true in this 2011.
Sincerely,
Xingzhuang Village Committee

VILLAGE DESCRIPTION
Xingzhuang Village has 1,390 people (270 households) of whom 712 are Han Chinese and 678 are Tibetan.
Most villagers cultivate barley, wheat, rape, potatoes, and beans. On average, the per capita income per year
is 2,200RMB, earned from selling vegetables and engaging in migrant labour in places such as Xining City.
However, income depends on a family's ability to operate a greenhouse, and go outside the village to do
migrant work.

Sanzhi Jie (b. 1953): I am a single father. My wife died two years ago. I have three children. My eldest son
is 20 and he helps me take care of our farm land so that his younger sisters can attend school. My eldest son
stopped school after high school, because our family cannot afford the tuition. We own around 6 mu of
agriculture land. We grow barley, wheat, potatoes, and rapeseed. Each year we earn about 4,000RMB by
selling potatoes, barley, and wheat. Sometimes, my son does construction work in Xining City and can earn
about 5,, from May to July, from this canearn about 5,000RMB. We really want our two girls to continue
their education so for this we work very hard. The clothing your gave us was really helpful by reducing what
we will spend on clothing. Thank you.
Xiucuo (b. 1986): I am 24 the the mother of two children. I gave birth to my first child when I was 20, and
now my second child is 2 years old. I am illiterate. I married into my husband's home in this village when I
was 19 years old. My husband is a farmer. I really liked the toys you provided. They are very good for my
children. And also the clothing. Thank you very much.
Guangque Jie (b. 1970): My family consists of my wife, me, and my daughter. My wife is disabled and
cannot do a lot of farm work. My daughter is 18 and will attend college next fall. We are all very happy, and
would like to try to support her education. My wife is very good at making small handicrafts which she sells
and earns a small income. The clothing was very helpful. We will spend less money on clothes and save
more money for our daughter's educaiton. Thank you.
