Climate Changes

1/4 WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?

oClimate change refers to changes in global climate and in particular to

changes in meteorological conditions.

Page 3: Climate change

2/4 Global Warming Global warming is the rise in the average

temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans.

The current cycle of global warming is changing the rhythms of climate that all living things have come to rely upon.

3/4 Ice Melting…

There are more than five million cubic miles of ice on Earth, and some scientists say it would take more than 5,000 years to melt it all. If we continue adding carbon to the atmosphere, we’ll very likely create an ice-free planet, with an average temperature of perhaps 80 degrees Fahrenheit instead of the current 58.

4/4 Ice Meltingo The melting of once-permanent ice is

already affecting native people, wildlife and plants. When the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf splintered, the rare freshwater lake it enclosed, along with its unique ecosystem, drained into the ocean. Polar bears, whales, walrus and seals are changing their feeding and migration patterns, making it harder for native people to hunt them. And along Arctic coastlines, entire villages will be uprooted because they're in danger of being swamped. The native people of the Arctic view global warming as a threat to their cultural identity and their very survival.

1/2 Air Pollution

Air Pollution: Warming temperatures worsen smog pollution, which triggers off asthma attacks and permanently damages and reduces the function of children’s lungs. Higher smog levels even contribute to premature deaths.

2/2 Air Pollution in GreeceGreeks are seeking cheaper fuels to warm

themselves this year because of ongoing austerity measures, but the cost-saving measures are

causing dangerous levels of harmful particulates that could lead to long-term health effects.

1/3 Water Pollution…

The Water Pollution Guide

Water covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface and is a very important resource for people and the environment. Water pollution affects drinking water, rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. This consequently harms human health and the natural environment.

Page 9: Climate change

Water pollution is any contamination of water with chemicals or other foreign substances that are detrimental to human, plant, or animal health. These pollutants include fertilizers and pesticides from agricultural runoff; sewage and food processing waste; lead, mercury, and other heavy metals; chemical wastes from industrial discharges; and chemical contamination from hazardous waste sites. Worldwide, nearly 2 billion people drink contaminated water that could be harmful to their health. Health Studies & Clinical Trials
