PRAYER
“Eternal Father, you have given us your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and revealed him to us at his baptism in the River Jordan, grant that we, who have been born again of water
and the Holy Spirit, and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior, who is alive with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.”

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” - M 1:11 Through our baptism, Stewards are daughters and sons of God. We are disciples of Jesus. As true disciples we are called to actively participate in our Catholic faith, not just be mere bystanders. This means working in collaboration with Holy Spirit and discerning how we are being asked to use our gifts. Using our gifts for the benefit of others and not just for our own interests and comfort.

Someone among our parish
family is being called. An opportunity is here for you to answer that call. The Faith Formation Program is in need of a sixth-grade catechist. You would have the opportunity to share your love of God with a small class of students and help them discover God’s love and presence in their lives. You are being called. Will you answer the call? Please call Mary Arnold (746-2144) to learn more and answer yes to the Spirit.
Sunday Gospel Reflections
from Bishop Parkes
Sunday, January 10, 2021 Baptism of the Lord
Becoming closer to God through Baptism
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”- Mark 1:7-11
You’ve probably heard the phrase “born again.” It’s a term that Catholics may not be very familiar with, but many of our Protestant friends are. It might be that they were baptized or even verbally committed their life to Christ. Many Catholics are traditionally baptized as infants, and in their teenage years recommit and confirm the seal of the Holy Spirit they received. It can be a spiritually uplifting time for many.
The Gospel for this weekend comes from St. Mark and it’s the account of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. We know that Jesus was conceived without sin and He remained sinless His entire life. So, we might ask the question, “why did Jesus have to be baptized?” Throughout salvation history, God gives us both extreme and practical examples of His love for us. Jesus is His son and you and I are children of God. Just as Adam and Eve were created by God, so were you and me. Like Adam and Eve, we are sinful creatures and we often use our free will to make poor decisions. It’s just the nature of man. The only way we can attain our place in Heaven is to be cleansed by water and the Holy Spirit, through the blood of the lamb, Christ’s eternal sacrifice on the cross.
Jesus submitted to the ritual cleansing that was being performed by John in the Jordan River, not because He needed it, but because we do, and so He sanctified, or made holy, the waters of baptism. God said to Jesus at His baptism, “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.” Imagine the God of the Universe, creator of all , saying the words, “John, Mary, Greg - you are my beloved child, with whom I am well pleased, who I created to live with me, to be with me for all eternity.” Know that God loves you more than anything and invites you to be close to His heart.

January 2021 Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, Every year, we always expect something new to happen. We all want to start everything in the right sense; proper place and in the right direction, to correct our old failing habits and start anew. In this regard, we want to improve our life and progress for the better. This dynamic is very normal, in fact, new year’s reso-lutions are based on this desire for change. However, a careful consideration is needed not to fall on just glamorizing our feelings and forgetting what is more important with our life. What we want is real grace from God to provide a genuine effect for change. Our faith in God must always be based on a good foundation. Our past and present realities must always point to the future with real optimism and hope. At Christmas, the birth of Jesus that we celebrate will al-ways remain a constant reminder that we are sharers of his divinity and we belong to God’s family. With this special relationship, we are afforded of a chance of physical and spiritual salvation. This is the mys-tery we always celebrate in our sacramental life. This year 2021, beckons us to a new beginning and new lifes reality. Let our optimism put us to action and our hope to a better foundation in our faith. Let us visualize the future with God and be willing to work together for a better result towards the future. We are closing a season to begin another one in the church liturgical calendar, with faithful consideration that all seasons are God’s and for our own good. The year behind us was quite challenging as we struggled because of the pandemic. But relying in our strong faith in God, we continue to move forward facing the reality with much hope and courage. There was no doubt that we are affected by this unfortunate situation we are facing right now. We are heartbroken and divided emotionally and physically. But as believers of Jesus Christ, we are still assured of spiritual connection and salvation. Christ dispelled the darkness for he is the true light amongst the fake lights that the world offers, and amidst the dimming lights we see, we strongly believe that Christ is our light and life. With a renewed spirit, let us entrust our life again to the God’s power and mercy. Jan 1st is always celebrated as a Solemnity for Mary our mother. The church has declared this day as the feast of Mary The Holy Mother of God. Mary as the mother of God, the mother of the universal church, is our mother too. We are God’s children, and we are children of the light. Under the care and intercession of our mother Mary, we are confident that we will do better in our life. Our home parish is a good venue to exercise our spiritual beings as individual and as a community. Here we recognize our calling, and we are blessed with gifts from the Holy Spirit to achieve our goals as a Christian community. Let us look forward to a better 2021! Our prayer is to build a stronger relationship with God and his peo-ple by doing His work and celebrate with a joyful heart. Have a Blessed New Year to all! In Christ, Fr Erwin

FEAST OF FAITH
The Sign of the Cross
At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

complacencias”. - Mc 1, 7-11
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
