Pastor’s Update Continued
The sacrament of Confirmation is related to but a distinct sacrament from Baptism. The first confirmation was at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, after Jesus ascended into heaven. For me, two things stand out at that first confirmation: first, I look at the ragtag bunch of disciples that Jesus had chosen. They were simple people such as fishermen who seemingly had no skill sets to spread Jesus’ message of salvation. Furthermore, they never seemed to get Jesus’ message themselves while Jesus was with them. Yet, with the gifts from the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, they were able to rise to the challenge. The second thing that stands out is the apostles’ enthusiasm for the faith. After Jesus ascended into heaven, one would think that the disciples would be downcast as he was no longer with them physically. However, the Scriptures tell us the opposite was true. Armed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, they were enthusiastic about the mission that Jesus had entrusted to them. I see the same enthusiasm in our ninth graders stepping forward and saying, “Yes, I want to be confirmed.” They say “yes” not knowing necessarily what the next step is that the Lord has for them in their life but trusting that God will be present to show them the way through all the ups and downs that they will face. They say “yes” to receiving the gifts that the Lord bestows on them at confirmation. And they say “yes” to God’s call for them to use those gifts to build up God’s Kingdom on earth. It’s significant that they also receive the sacrament during this time of pandemic, when society is being shaken and changed in fundamental ways. The pandemic will have lasting impacts on society in ways that we do not yet know. For the Confirmation Class of 2020 the Lord is bestowing gifts to be able to deal with the aftermath of the pandemic and to grow society in new and unforeseen ways. Their willingness in coming forward and saying “yes” stokes my own enthusiasm and my own hope for the future. Just like God knew what he was doing with the original ragtag bunch of disciples at Pentecost, I trust—and it is an act of trust in God—that God knows what God is doing with us now.
Pastor’s Update Fr. Bob Miller
Eucharist for the Vulnerable and Homebound
The order of 100 pyxes and accompanying prayer cards have arrived! A pyx is the little container we use to take the Eucharist to the homebound. I know that our homebound—which is all of us who are unable to gather for Mass—desires desperately to receive the Eucharist. I also know that some of our Eucharistic ministers are eager to deliver it to the homebound. However, I also do not want me or any other Eucharistic minister from the church to be the source of spreading the virus to someone who is vulnerable at home. So, for the foreseeable future, neither the priests nor current Eucharistic ministers will be bringing the Eucharist to the homebound. That’s where the 100 pyxes come in. If someone from the household would like a pyx and prayer card, I will deputize you to be able to take the Eucharist yourself to someone in your own household. You can arrange to pick up a pyx and prayer card and then either attend Mass yourself to get a consecrated host in your pyx or bring the pyx after 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday night or after the 8:30 am and 9:00 am Masses on Wednesday morning, when the priest distributes the Eucharist outside to those who aren’t able to gather inside. You yourself can then take the Eucharist to someone who is vulnerable and homebound in your household. Fr. Dave Green, our parish chaplain, is in charge of the distribution of pyxes and prayer cards so please contact him at: 724-941-9406, ext. 292, or E-Mail him at: [email protected], to arrange a pick up.
August Confirmations Speaking of deputizing, Bishop Zubik has given permission to the pastor of each parish to confirm the students in the Confirmation Class of 2020. So, it was a thrill for me for the first time to be able to begin confirming the students in our parish. We did the first confirmation earlier in the month, and we have two others scheduled on August 25 and August 27, at 6:30 pm. All are being live streamed because of the occupancy limits in church. Feel free to tune in to watch. Continued in the next column

“It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour.
