MARCUS GARVEY: 56 PEOPLE DISPLACED AFTER FIRE
Church lies in ruinsMANDLA MAHASHE
“If I was young and fit, I would have donesomething to save my church.”These were the words of a heartbroken 80-
year-old Mabuza Mketshu, whose shackchurch, along with 29 homes, burnt to theground inMarcus Garvey on Saturday 1 No-vember.Mketshu casts a lonely figure on the busy
street, as he stares at the charred remainsof his beloved Melitha Zionist Church. It’s Sunday morning around 11:00 and,
Mketshu tells City Vision, by now his fellowcongregants would be proceeding with thechurch service. “But all we have now is achurch in ruins; it’s heartbreaking. Whathurts most is that when the fire started, Icould do nothing but watch from the win-dow. I just did not have the strength,” hesaid, staring at the charcoal streaked ironplates. When asked what he thought would hap-
pen to his church, he replied they have noother option but to rebuild again.“I’mnot surewhatwill be done, but I know
that the church does not have a big bank bal-ance to buy new material. We will have touse the same material,” he explained.A total of 56 people havebeen left homeless
by the fire, which also caused the death ofThandile Rhuxwana (35).Neighbour Thembeni Hendi said the fire
started at Rhuxwana’s shack at about 21:00.“I was sleepingwhen I heard a commotion
and went to investigate. I saw that his houseand the homes of others were on fire. Therewas chaos as everyone was struggling tosave their lives and belongings,”Hendi said.
Hendi added most of the fire victims lostall their belongingsbecause itwas “extreme-ly difficult” to vacate the area, as the houseswere built too close to each other. The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk
Management team distributed building ma-terial to the victims on Sunday morning.City Fire Services spokesperson Theo
Layne confirmed that the fire was caused bya short circuit in the electrical wiring of astructure. He advised residents to exercisecaution when using candles and electricalappliances.

Criminal activitiescripples our country
At times I wish I could touch on everyissue I know of, just to inform you.I know there are limitations to what
one person can chew or do.I say “chew” because sometimes people
want to know and comment on everyissue without having all the facts, thusdistorting the truth. As you know, I try to bring you issues
of which I have in-depth knowledge – notjust umgosi.I feel I could spend my life bringing you
everything which will bring change orhighlight a certain disorder in ourcommunities. At times I would say it like it is or be
diplomatic about it, forcing you to readbetween the lines. The diplomacy, at times, initiates some
questions which I have to deal withone-on-one, because these days peopletend to personalise issues.I hope nothing personal is taken from
my writings and if it is, then I apologise.Coming back to my topic for the day:
crime. It was with dismay that I read the
reaction and focus put on some cases inour country.I do not want to sound like I am
repeating myself, but I want to point outissues of concern. We live in a province where – in
Afrikaans slang – stiek uit is the highestcriminal hub.I need not go into detail about the
number of cases the police deal with –right now it seems as if it is the norm forit to be ignored. It has now become the way of life that
these criminal transgressions or acts arenormal. It seems like a free for all or it depends
on who you are for your case to progress. Our family is a victim of this syndrome
as well and I am sure there are manyother such families like mine who neveror will never find finality to their cases. The worst part of this is that it is not
like anyone needed to do this extensivedetective work to find the culprits. Some of the cases never make it to
court. This leads to culprits continuing ontheir paths with ease.I believe that until all criminal activi-
ties such as murders, robbery and rapeare given the same priority and notcategorised by who you are, then we cancut down the numbers.Take, for instance, the amount of money
being offered for finding Senzo’s killers; ifeven a thousandth of that money could beoffered for the many criminal offencescommitted throughout the country, I amsure our country would be clean.People, I apologise for being so blunt,
but I am just using that mathematicalanalogy to highlight the dire need to sortout crime. We have witnessed people walking free
and coming back to commit more acts ofcrime, because lip service is given insome cases. Is there something I am missing,
somewhere?Could there be collusion between
certain elements in our society? Is the justice or police system ever
going to work for the downtroddenmasses? I wonder...If I am missing the point with my
questions or statements, please school me.Crime levels have reached high levels –
to the extent that our children strive tobe counted as criminals as well.Konakele.

Tech whizzes get a homeMANDLA MAHASHE
Langa’s troubled youths have been throwna lifeline with the opening of the BrothersforAll premises at IkhayaLeLanga last Fri-day.
Officially opened by Lord Rowan Wil-liams from Cambridge University, the cen-tre offers coding and programming lessonsto troubled and vulnerable youths at nocharge. It also sells arts and craft material.
Sihle Tshabalala, the organisation’s na-tional coordinator, said the aim of the cen-tre is to disrupt the cycle of poverty by offer-ing a way out.
“Computer programming is a much sortafter skill, with big companies prepared tohire people even without matric,” he said.
“We offer this training for free to givethem an opportunity to create a career forthemselves.”
If there was one man that understandswhat it means to be a troubled youth itwould be Tshabalala.
He is currently out on patrol after serving
11 years in prison for armed robbery afterhe was arrested at the age of 19. While inprison, Tshabalala joined the Group ofHope initiative where hewas rehabilitated. Then his new perspective on life was real-ised. Tshabalala taught himself how tocode, programme and built websites.
“I decided to teach myself after a fellowprisoner had posed the question: ‘what canI learn now that can still be relevant whenI get out of prison in 10 years time?’ Forme, programming was the only answer,” Tsha-balala said.
Training started eight weeks ago and al-ready boasts a star student, Sibusiso Gabu-za who is able to build a website.
“I was invited to the programme by Tsha-balala after dropping out of college and itwas the best thing to happen to me,” the 20year old said.
“Before I was given this opportunity, Iwas job hunting and I’m happy I grabbedit with both, because now I have a skill toadd to my CV. I plan to pass the skill on toothers.”
Kind doctor leaves teary eyes as he diesGEOFF MAMPUTA
Dr Sam Gqada who has served the blackcommunities of Cape town as the only op-tometrist for a long time, has died.
He died on November 1 at the age of 64years .
Those who later came into the proffesionwere motivated by him and pioneers likeMjokes Tyaliti whose practices Sam tookover after Tyaliti’s relocation.
He liveda life thatwas full,he enjoyed eve-ry moment to the fullest,he was helful toeveryone in the community even the old la-dy who could not afford a pair of spectacles.
At one stage I saw an old lady leaving thepractice with a full smile whilst Sam wasgoing on “Bribri mntanam uyagula, uthi
wakundijonga ngezondondo ndiske ndiny-ibilike”.
He then stopped abruptly and said “AhAh,hayi khona, ingaba ndibeka ubomi ba-kho esichengeni if ndigakuyeka uhambeneezipeks ezinje, ezintwana zocingaokokuba una sixteen”.
The satisfied lady then smiled, I wouldsay, blushed in normal conversation, butsince black people don’t blush I will justsay wamuntsa.
On asking why he had sold such an obvi-ously pair of Ray Ban spectacles to somewho looked like she could not afford such.He responded in that deep bass laughterthat seems to come right up from thedepths of his belly and said: “Broer thatlady is going to a funeral of her only broth-er and what she could afford on a pension-ers income I did not have, how then do Imake her day than to provide her with thebest that I have at no charge, then she canuse her money for the funeral, abe ngumn-tu naye”.
That is Sam,that gesture he did withouta second thought and all you get when youtalk about business would be “Umntunawuphina ubalulekile” and then a burstof that resounding laughter.
He was a pioneer in more ways than one. When career guidance classes were of-
fered at Uluntu , Samwould be the first vol-unteer and would even take the leaners ona tour of his practice.
If space permitted one would write abouthis life journey from the rural EasternCape, night school, lack of funds for furthereducation, doing some of the lowest and de-manding jobs. He never lost sight of whathe wanted to achieve in life, which as kuku-ba ngugqirha wamehlo.
Rest in peace brigade ,you have showedus and future generations the way.It is upto us to continuewith thework that you did.
Dr Sam Gqada will be buried in KwaGwabenivillage in Peddie on Saturday.
Cele receives support for his ‘We can’t live in fear’ rantCommunities and the country at large can-not live in feardue to acts of criminality andcriminals, Agriculture, Forestry and Fish-eries Deputy Minister Bheki Cele said onTuesday.
“We can’t live this life of fear,” the formernational police commissioner told resi-dents of Vosloorus, on the East Rand, at ameeting to discuss crime.
“Someone, somewhere must rise and say
enough is enough. That’s why it is relevantthat young people of Gauteng are standingup and saying enough is enough. “

Gugulethu: Patrollers’ shelter in ashes
There’s no stopping this watchMBONGISENI MASEKO
A neighbourhood watch is determined tocontinue their mission of keeping Gugu-lethu’s streets safe. This despite the setback of losing their
shelter in a recent fire. They claim the shel-ter was set alight by thugs.Asijiki Neighbourhood Watch chairper-
son Xolela Mkhithi said they will live up tothemeaning of name of the organisation andnot have second thoughts about fightingcrime.Their shelter, which was situated on the
corner of NY 69 and NY 3A, burnt to theground in the early hours of last Thursdaymorning.Mkhithi saidwatchmemberswere alerted
to the fire by a taxi driverwhohadbeendriv-ing passed the shelter. He alleges the mantold the members men set it alight beforevanishing into the dark. The flames also destroyed abakkie canopy
which was inside nearby yard.“We are not going to stop doing the job
whichwe have been doing.Wewill continuekeeping our streets safe. ‘Asijiki’, as thename of our organisation says. We believethe shelter was destroyed by people who areagainst what we are doing,” Mkhithi said.Mkhithi said they hope to get a container
to use in future, as it provide shelter fromthe rain and cold. The incident marked the second time the
structurewas destroyed since its erection inMay.Watch member Skholiwe Nxuseka claims
members of a gang confessed to destroyingthe shelter a week after it was erected.“We warned them to stop destroying the
shelter. Now the shelter is destroyed again
and we do not know who destroyed it,” Nx-useka said. The watch members did not open a case
with the police. The 13 watch members patrol the streets
from NY1 and NY78.Patroller Grant Tambo said they have
managed toprevent anumberof criminal ac-tivities, including the recovery of stolen dis-posable nappies after a truck-jacking nearGugulethu Square in June, as well as a de-crease in of house burglaries and robberies.Nobantu Pita, owner of the house where
the car canopywas destroyed, said the cano-py was a dog shelter and puppets. The dogs
were not injured during the incident.“The watch is a great help in the area. We
feel safer since they started patrolling. Thethugs do not want them to patrol; they wantto rule our area,” she said.Despite the watch’s sterling work, Nxuse-
ka claims they do not have a relationshipwith Gugulethu police. He said patrollers were arrested after as-
saulting a suspected thug and claims the po-lice do not react to their calls. In a statement, Gugulethu police con-
firmed they are investigating case of mali-cious damage to property. No arrests havebeen made.
“We commend good work done by neigh-bourhood watches and believe this incidentaims to discourage them. Neighbourhoodwatches work directly with sector manag-ers. If such incidents occur, it must be re-ported for investigation. If watches experi-ence any problems, they can phone ColonelMdonga on 082 469 2918 or Lieutenant Colo-nel Brink in 082 334 7517,” the statementread.“If there is still unhappiness, they can con-
tact the station commander, Brigadier Mvo-to, or report such incidents to the local com-munity police forum chairperson, Mr.Matsolo.”

Man dies in shack fireMBONGISENI MASEKO
A man burnt to death after a mysterious firewhich is said to have started in toilet brokeout on Monday morning in Langa.
Kibotele Manda, 32, who resides in Wood-stock, was killed by the flames hours afterhe visited his friends at Ndabeni Street.
Manda was sleeping alone in a shack atthe back of the house when the fire brokeout in a toilet which is also at back of thehouse.
Mark Ngonyani, 35, a friend said they lastspoke to Manda when he asked for a match-es to light a cigarette at about 3am.
“We then heard screams from neighboursthat there was fire coming from the toilet. The shack where he was sleeping wasquickly caught up in the flames as it wasclose to the toilet. I was confused and I didnot think he was still inside the shack. I on-ly managed to take my baby out. I lost every-thing I had in the fire,” Ngonyani said.
Manda, who originates from Tanzania, came to visit his fellow countrymen on Sun-day.
“It is very painful to lose him like that. The fire spread very quickly. We are leftwith no shelter now,” he added.
Andiswa Joni, who also stays in the yard, said she was woken up by a “funny smell”and saw the flames destroying the houses,
at about 4am.“We tried to call him but he could not
hear us because he has hearing problems. This is so bad,” Joni said.
Ngonyani said Manda was expected to beburied by Tuesday as he was a Muslim.
The fire also spread to two houses, number 19 and 21, and left a massive dam-age.
Vuyani Faku, 56, of house number 19, wasso devastated after the incident.
“I am only left with the clothes that I amwearing right now. I also lost my salary ofabout R1600 which was in my shack (at theback of the house). I feel very bad, becauseI do not even have food and clothes. I do notknow where I am going to sleep tonight,”Faku said.
Faku’s house was left with no electricityand water after the incident.
Alderman Brian Watkyns, the councillorat ward 53, also came to check the damagein the houses, on Monday.
“It is terrible that a visitor lost his life inthe fire. This is tragedy,” Watkyns said.
Watkyns said he would see if he could or-ganise some food and blankets for the fami-lies affected.
Inspector Odwa Makupula, Langa policespokesperson, said the police were investi-gating an inquest docket and that the causefor the fire was still unknown.

Kopanong Africa Project has set its sightson improving the lives of residents in Aca-cia Park and surrounding areas. But first, they held a fun run.The NPO was launched amid a fun and
sweat at the 5km Community Fun Run atVuyiseka High School on Saturday 25 Octo-ber.The organisation’s deputy chairperson
SindileMtshakaza toldCity Vision they areaiming at improving the lives of those inneed. “We seek to engage with the troubledyouths and linking them to facilities thatwill see them gain essential skills. Theyneed to have the skills that can make thememployable and entrepreneurs,” Mtshaka-zi said.Kopanong Africa will also focus on the
elderly who have an abundance of skillswhich can be used to their benefit, as wellas to the benefit of the rest of the communi-ty. “Elderly people, for instance, are skilled
cooks in traditional African food and thisexpertise can be used to boost the tourismindustry, as well as help them make a liv-ing. Our organisation aims to bridge thesegaps so that we can alleviate poverty, fightcrime and improve or communities,” he ex-plained.Over 300 people participated on the day
and Mtshakaze said he was happy that theevent was well received.“We couldhave gone for a soccer or rugby
tournament, but we decided to go aheadwith a fun run as it is not as popular in ourcommunities. It has a lot of benefits for peo-ple, especially healthwise.Manypeople areeatingunhealthy andnot exercising, so thiswill help in that regard,” he said.Going forward Kopanong Africa hopes to
strengthen its relationshipswith communi-ty organisations such as neighbourhoodwatches and local businesses, such asPhilippi Cash and Carry, which sponsoredrefreshments for the event alongside Pre-mier Foods.

The White House structure was initially envisaged as an office for the local Ward Councillorand a community meeting room. The structure was vandalised and there were seriouscommunity difficulties at the time of the implementation of the project which causedsignificant delays and damages. The City of Cape Town has therefore organized a publicmeeting to resolve the matter in order for the White House Project to be finalized.
These possible solutions will be presented at an open-day session where affected membersof the public are invited to attend and obtain additional information and submit comments.

Conned: Crying foul over ‘promise’ of employment
Youths upset over ‘job scam’MONIQUE DUVAL
Angry and confused, a group of young, un-employed people are demanding answers.
More than 30 people gathered at a Laven-der Hill home last week to voice their opin-ions on an alleged job scam run by theSes’Khona People’s Rights Movement.
The group, who asked to remain anony-mous, claim they were informed about atraining programme where people are em-ployed by Metrorail.
They said they were called to meetingsat Retreat library and told to complete reg-istration forms. In addition they were toldto pay R25 and provide a certified copy oftheir IdentityDocuments andaphotographfor their Ses’Khona membership cards.
One 29-year-old women said with thiscard they could board trains for free, getfree food from fast food outlets and freeclothes from various retailers.
Despite promises for training and jobs, the group says this never materialised andscheduled meetings were continually can-celled.
Instead, they were informed to boardtrains and make their way to Cape TownCBD and Bellville and attend the court ap-pearances of Ses’Khona chairpersonAndile Lili. Lili is the man behind the “pooprotests” across Cape Town and reportedlyappeared in court last week on charges re-lating to the dumping of human waste atthe Cape Town International Airport lastyear.
Angry residents explained they boardedtrains for free and attended court appear-ances.
Here they say they met other Ses’Khonamembers from Muizenberg, Mitchell’sPlain and Khayelitsha who also thoughtthey would be working on trains.
The group say they are “fed up with thelies” and want their money back.
“We are desperate for work and gave theR25 because we believed them. How couldthey do this to us? We are already suffer-ing,” one woman said.
The group produced a registration formwhich has the name “Sesikhona” on it anda cellphone number.
The number belongs to Lili’s co-accusedLoyiso Nkohla.City Vision showed the group the profile
picture of the Ses’Khona Facebook pageand they immediately identified Lili as theman “who promised them jobs”.
“That’s him, the pig,” one woman shout-ed.
Lili claims Ses’Khona has an agreementwith Metrorail but says a public announce-ment on the issue has been stalled due tointerferencebyprovincial transportminis-ter Donald Grant.
He says the agreement included provid-ing jobs for 25 000 people and says Ses’Kho-
na was told to commence recruitment.“The people are ready but Metrorail is
stalling because of interference. These jobsare for the poorest of the poor so they canhave something on the table at Christmas,”he says.
However, according to Grant’s spokes-person Siphesihle Dube this is not the case.
He explains after initial reports of allega-tions that Metrorail may have been com-plicit in a “jobs for pay” scam involvingSes’Khona, Grant wrote to Metrorail re-gional manager, Richard Walker, seekingclarity.
Dube says Walker then responded refut-ing such claims and explained a proposalwas submitted by a women’s empower-ment group with affiliates for job opportu-nities in the cleaning of railway reserves, and that no decision had been made.
“Grant considered these allegations asvery serious, which prompted his requestfor clarity,” Dube adds.
Lili says Ses'Khona members were not al-lowed to take free items from stores andclaims: “That is propaganda”.
He says Ses’Khona members attendedcourt appearance voluntarily and were notrequired to do so.
The Lavender Hill group disputes thissaying they were “clearly told” that mem-bers who attended court appearanceswould be given jobs first.
Lili says if Metrorail does not go publicwith their plans, Ses’Khona will march totheir offices today (Thursday 6 November).
According to Metrorail spokespersonRiana Scott, Metrorail and the PassengerRail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) do nothave a partnership with Ses’Khona.
She says they were approached by theProgressive Women’s Movement (PWM)with a job creation proposal involvingyouth and women in a project to clean railreserves.
“A draft proposal was presented to thePrasa group chief executive, who recognis-ing the need for job creation, proposed ajoint working group to assess the feasibili-ty of the PWM initiative,” Scott explains.
She says this is still in proposal stage andno formalised arrangement exists.
“No one under the name of Prasa orMetrorail is being recruited nor will be ap-pointed until the project is formally ap-proved,” she adds.
In addition Scott explains under the Le-gal Succession Act, all passengers are re-quired to travel with a valid ticket.
Should there be an accident, commuterswithout valid tickets will not receive com-pensation.
“Dozens of organisations approachMetrorail annually to transport people tovarious events. We have not yet receivedan application from Ses’Khona for contracttrains,” she explains.

INVITATION TO ATTEND A SUPPORTAND DEVELOPMENTWORKSHOP FORMICRO-ENTERPRISES
OPINIONmthakazi makalima
Where has ourubuntu spirit gone?
Death has become common to our ears. It’s something that we hear about
every day.No one wants to sway to it’s melody
with the sad rhythm. It has become an everyday occurrence
– something as normal as the air that webreath in.
But it’s not.Overnight, South Africa has changed
from a beautiful country into a horrormovie.
These days walking through the streetsof your hometown or kasi is not as easyas it used to be. You may bump intothugs who might kill you for a lousycellphone – as if taking somebody’s life isan easy feat.
Life is not fair and this world is forhard-working people who know whatthey want and where they want to be.
You cannot blame poverty for youmaking the wrong choice to be a thugand take other people’s lives to feedyourself.
People see this country as a place tocommit murder and get away with it –British businessman Shrien Dewani iscurrently on trial for allegedly planningthe murder of his wife.
This shows a lack of respect for ourpicturesque country. What do we sayabout it?
People from other countries don’t takeus seriously and we have no one to
blame but ourselves. We have portrayedour country as a crime haven.
This country still mourns the senselessslaying of Bafana Bafana and OrlandoPirates captain Senzo Meyiwa. He waskilled in cold blood for, it is believed, something as small as a cellphone.
He cannot be brought back. Hischildren have to grow up without theirfather and his family and teammateshave to try to fill the void left by hissudden passing all for a cellphone whichwas probably sold a pittance to buynyaope.
Funerals are common – we attend afuneral of a family member or someonewe know nearly every weekend.
Our churches are now places whichprepare us for death rather than life.
We need to take a stand and bring anend to the scourge of crime crippling ourcountry.
Living in fear in your own home is notnormal. Watching your back whereveryou go is not normal. Friends kill eachother during silly arguments. Why, then,do we do this in South Africa?
Every day souls fall victim to murderand we keep quiet as if everything isfine; as if we don’t know the murderers. For as long as we keep quiet, innocentpeople will be killed.
The rate of murder cases increasesdaily, especially in townships.
It’s time to stop this monotonousmelody and rhythm, which no one candances to; it’s time to stop the sound ofmurder. We cannot carry on living likethis. We are South Africans. We areknown for the spirit of ubuntu, althoughthis is not the spirit which we preach.

Final examinationis not the finish lineIt is that time of the year when the sunseems to rise too early; the days are longand warm; and the sun sets at 20:00.The promise of summer is upon us.It is a time of relief for those of us less
fortunate, with limited shelter to call ahome. Those of us who appreciated the respite
from the cutting winter chill and rain ofthe Cape... at least for the next threemonths or so.However, it is also a time of anxiety,
fear and insecurity coupled by a sense ofbeing overwhelmed for others. To some, the year seemed to fly by so
fast that they do not feel adequatelyprepared for one of the most life chang-ing experiences of their lives – matricand umeluko. It is a time when those writing matric
examinations look back at the journeythey have travelled; the valleys and thehills they have climbed; the momentswhen they nearly gave up; the strugglesto pay the school fees when their parentslost their jobs; enduring a lesson in classon a cold winters day on an emptystomach; and waking up with the birds totravel to faraway schools because theirparents want the best for them.It is worth looking back, as some gave
up on this journey as a results of thesefactors.Think back on all those people who
were in your class in creche and Grade 1.Where are they? You have persevered and endured. You
had determination and were focused. The gang wars, taxi wars, service
delivery protests, shack fires, demolitionhomes, muggings and the boys forcingthemselves on you has not broken yourspirit. You have taken it in your stride. In
fact, you have soared above it all becauseyou know where you want to be in life. The matric exams won’t stop you. You
have overcome bigger challenges in life. This is even more true for those who,
immediately after the exams, will enter anew phase in life.Umeluko is a right of passage – a
transition from childhood to adulthoodand a phase which indicates that anindividual is ready to serve his communi-ty and nation, ready to contribute to thenurturing and guidance, and providedirection to the generation after him. This is umeluko. It is not about age.It is not about
ukubuyisa yonke lemigido ubuyikhupha. Itis not about showing the world howextravagant your ceremony can be.It is about appreciating how far your
offspring has come, celebrating your roleas parent in the nurturing, guidance andraising a young man who is ready tocontribute to the community, society andthe world. It is a moment to be proud of – as a
young person for you have come far. Alsotake a moment to reflect on you life’swork as a parent. As a community, we are fully behind
you as future leaders. It would be a gesture of affirmation of
our pride in you if all the churches andplaces of worship would sent aside aSunday of the month to bless all thosewho will be or are writing exams, as wellas those who are preparing to move on tothe next phase in their lives. We are proud of them as they are the
next Sobukwe, Mandela, Biko or Mamph-ele.Good luck! We are so proud of you.
GEOFF MAMPUTAEmail
Best of luck to all matriculantsI want to wish all grade 12pupils the best in their finalexams.Matrics, put all your hopes
in God’s hands and have faithin Him. He will always bethere for you.Stay away from social
networks and put your focuson that which matters mostin your lives – your studies.Your teachers have played
their roles; now it’s time toproduce the best results.

CITY VISIONThursday, 6 November 2014 SPORT 15Khayelitsha: Local schools wins kit sponsor
Teams are dressed to impressMBONGISENI MASEKO
Teams at Impendulo Primary School re-ceived a much needed boost when Omo do-nated sporting gear to the school on Tues-day.The school was announced as the overall
winner of a competition run by the washingpowder brand. The prize saw seven of theschool’s sport codes receiving playing kit.The school’s sport coordinator Mhloni
Ngcume said they were ecstatic to receivethe gear.“We came top in the list of winners in the
province, which shows that our [pupils] arecommitted,” Ngcume said. The competition required schools to col-
lect emptywashing powder containers to en-ter. “I am very happy, because all our sport-ing codesbenefited.Wehavebeen strugglingwith sport kit for all the teams,” Ngcume
said. The school’s soccer, rugby, netball, crick-
et, softball, table tennis andhockey teams re-ceived brand new playing strips. This has been a good year for the school
on the playing fields, as they won the DSKChess Academy and Social Outreach Pro-gram tournament, which saw 16 schoolsfrom the district do battle. The under-9 and under-11 soccer teams al-
so won trophies at a local primary schoolsoccer tournament.Likhona Ngxesha of Khayelitsha Super-
spar, the store which ran and organised thecompetition in partnership with Omo, saidthe store “supports many local schools andactivities”.“Our partnership with Omo benefits the
schools, pupils and community who supportour business. This is the way of ploughingback to the community,” Ngxesha said.

Support the Proteas, wear their jerseyAdidas unveiled the new One DayInternational (ODI) kit for the SouthAfrican national cricket team re-cently.This season’s kit will remain the
traditional green and include strik-ing gold sleeves, collar and the re-nowned three stripes of Adidas. The design of the jersey is all
about the clean and elegant inter-pretation of the iconic Protea, sym-bolising rebirth and rising from theashes to keep in line with the Pro-teas’ ongoing campaign, #Pro-teaFire.
The jersey also features Adidas’new and innovative Climachill tech-nology.This apparel technology has been
introduced in other categories with-in Adidas and uses titanium coolingdots which are strategically placedat key areas on the body to cool thecore body temperature. This will ensure that the Proteas
remain cool on the pitch.“Adidas have incorporated the
tradition, values and spirit of theProteas in the new jersey design, de-veloped for all upcoming ODI
games” said Adidas SA spokesper-son, Gugu Ntuli.“We feel that Adidas, in partner-
shipwithCricket SouthAfrica, havecombined the essence of our nation-al team to create something we andProtea fans will all be proud of.”The Proteas 2014/15 ODI kit is

Harmony FC was crowned under 15 champs after a tough season. Harmony FC under13 team also basked in their own glory.
Langa football clubs end season on a highIt was a busy weekend for Langa Local Foot-ball Association – a weekend which saw athedecider andaweekendwhichwas soughta champion. In the juniors section , Harmony Football
Club was crowned champions of under-13and under-15 leagues, despite this being the
club’s first year of existence. They showeda great hunger than the other teams. The senior sectionwaswon by Citizen FC,
who played to a goalless draw in their lastgame.Citizens were the defending champions
and will now participate in the SAFA Cape
Town regional play-offs. They stand achance to play in the third division, the SABLeague if they win all their games.Langa LFA chairperson Eric Gum
summed up his feelings about the season.“It was a great feeling to see the teams
fighting for the league on the last day,” Gum
said.“it shows that there’s healthy competition
among our teams.”He also wished Citizen FC all the best for
their upcoming play-offs.The play offs will start on the first week
of next month at The Greens in Manenberg.
Rowan in demandSupersport United goalkeeper Ronwen Wil-liams is emerging as a high-profile target forbothKaizerChiefs andOrlandoPirates, whocould find themselves in a pricey tug of warfor the player.Officials and agents say Williams is the
top target forOrlandoPirates to replace Sen-zoMeyiwa, tragicallykilled inabotched rob-bery last week in a dastardly deed thatshocked the country. Pirates would only beable to move for the 22-year-old Williams inthe January transfer window, while Chiefswill know then about the future of their first-choice keeper Itumeleng Khune.
Khune has been linked with a possiblemove toMamelodi Sundowns as his contractwith Chiefs heads to a close in July nextyear. Khune (27) has been in talks withChiefs, who are keen to tie him down to alengthy contract that will keep him at theclub, but if no deal is done by the end of theyear then he is allowed, in terms of PremierSoccer League regulations, to sign a pre-con-tact for next season with another club.
Sundowns’ ability to payastronomical sal-aries, way above the means of the rest of thePSL teams, means Khune could be temptedinto a move across the Jukskei River just asprevious Chiefs No 1 Brian Baloyi was 10years ago in what was then a shock switchof allegiance.IfKhunegoes toSundowns, as is beingpre-
dicted, then Williams is likely to also beChiefs’ top choice as a replacement. It will
then allow SuperSport the benefit of a possi-ble tug of war for the services of their goal-keeper which could net the club a handsometransfer fee.Pirates have a close relationship with Su-
perSport and have bought from them play-ers likeDaineKlate,ThandaniNtshumaleyoand Kermit Erasmus in recent years.Williams, whohaswon twoBafanaBafana
caps this year, has made a strong impactsince his professional debut as a teenager inthe 2010-11 season. Earlier this year hetrained at Bundesliga club Hannover ‘96 inGermany.

Pupils from eight Gugulethu primaryschools showcased their sporting talentsduring a sports day at Luzuko PrimarySchool last Friday. The event was organised by Vuselela
Sport and Life Skills Development.Teams from the schools played soccer
and netball against each other.Sokhanyo and Luzuko primary
schools contested the final of the soccertournament. The nail-biting clash fin-ished in a 1-1 stalemate, leading to a pen-alty shoot-out.The spot kick play eventually ended
with Sokhanyo winning 5-4.These two schools also locked horns in
the netball final. But it was Luzuko Pri-mary School which eventually nettedtheir way to a 6-4 victory.Vuselela Sport andLife SkillsDevelop-
ment coach Anele Magqwaka said thetournament aimed to keep the pupils offthe streets.“Some [pupils] have not been attend-
ing school but since the sporting chal-lenge was set, they have changed theirminds and are in school everyday. Thisis as a result of the power of sport. Theyare always excited about playing andpractising,” Magqwaka said. The organisation is currently in the
planning face of starting aweekly league
for local schools, Magqwaka explained. They hope this will materialise nextyear. The competition was the second of its
kind, organised by Vuselela, in the lasttwo months.Four schools participated in the first
tournament in September.Adding to the success of the action on
the playing fields, was the sponsorshipof food from Spur and trophies by San-lam.Vuyani Primary School teacher
Andile Mpontsana praised the event.“We were so excited, because it was thefirst time a tournament of this magni-tude was staged in the area. It was wellorganised,” he said.“Although I am disappointed that my
school did not win, I will ensure that ourpupils work hard and win the tourna-ment next year.”Pupils, teachers and coaches also hon-
oured slain Bafana Bafana and OrlandoPirates captain, Senzo Meyiwa. The goalkeeperwas gunned down dur-

Khayelitsha Cricket Club hosted NyangaCricket Club in an under-15 match at theweekend. The game was reduced from 20 to 15 overs,
because Nyanga arrived late.Nyanga won the toss and elected to bat
first. They lost their first wicket in the firstover, but went on to put 73 runs on the board.Khayelitsha’s chase fell just short as they
lost by a mere three runs.Sipho Falakhe, a 13-year-old Nyanga bowl-
er said: “Our batting was not strong and thebatsmen were afraid to face their bowlers. We just need to go back to the basics and sortout our batting order.”Nyanga’s best batsman on the day,
Thabang Lewu (14) said: “Khayelitshabowledverywell today.Theyhave improved. They made me bring out my A-game. I justneed to work on my back foot, because I gotout as a result of it today.”
Nyanga teammanager StanleyMaqhubelasaid: “The game was even. The players inboth teams were the more or less the sameage, but they all still need to learn. I’m happywith the way they played.”TheKhayelitsha teamwas disappointed af-
ter losing on their home ground.Thembelihle Matondile (14), who made his
debut on the day, was one of Khayelitsha’stop run scorers. He said: “I played verywell today, but Iwas
nervous as it wasmy first game. Since I start-ed playing cricket this year, I still have averylong way to go and I’m confident I will im-prove.”Vuyo Bomvana was Khayelitsha’s best
bowler with two wickets for 10 runs in threeovers. He said: “My bowling was pretty goodtoday. I just need to stop pitching the ballshort and I must learn to swing the ball. Asgood as their batsmen were, they were run-ning away frommyballs, because Iwas bowl-ing at such a fast pace.”
