CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS

I really miss the winter snow,The foggy nights, the firelight glow,

The family gathering for the yearly feast,The brotherly love to say the least.

I really miss the blue tit chirp,The family’s giggles at Dad’s loud burp.

The turkey roast, the leg of pork,Dad’s old jokes and his yearly talk.

I really miss the Robin’s breast,The late sunrise over the mountain crest.

Icicles hanging from the window sill,The Christmas TV was always ‘The Bill’.

I really miss the winter blow,The frozen footprints across the snow.

The board game played was mostly scrabble,No one listened to the constant babble.

I really miss the trifle and pud.The refreshing smell of fresh chopped wood.

We sang carols, we had no choice,Listening to Auntie’s warbling voice.I really miss ……………………………..

Like hell I do!!!!! I love my Aussie Christmas.

Lions Club provide Special Chairs for Pam Corker HouseThe Lions Club ofWaroona, inconjunction with theAustralian LionsFoundationrecently provided

Pam Corker House with 3 new airchairs. The frailty of many Pam Corkerresidents meant the the existing hard-plastic and hard-cushioned chairswere not meeting their comfort needs.Air Chairs provide more comfort for theelderly by incorporating a cushionedadjustable air cell support in the

design. Thechairs havea reclinableseat alongwith anadjustablebackrestand calfrest. Beingon wheelsmeansresidentscan be

easily moved around the facility. With the total cost of all 3 chairs at$5700, the Australian LionsFoundation provided half the moneythrough its grants process, with theLions Club of Waroona providing theremain half.

Lions Members attend thepresentationFacility Manager, Janet Fiorenzathanked the Lions Club of Waroonaand the Australian Lions Foundation, and said the new chairs are awelcomed addition to provide a betterquality of life for all residents whoIrene Mooney with Pat Deleo

require them. The LionsClub ofWaroonaare proudto haveprovidedthe newequipmentto such animportant

local facility,and wish tothank the

Waroona community because this isanother tangible example of thecommunity's continuing support of theWaroona Lions.

Readers reaction toAuthors and their books

are varied and this has proven to bethe case with the American writer LisaJackson who has appeared on theNew York Times, USA Today and thePublishers Weekly national bestsellerlists and as she says in her Bio, lovesto make her readers ‘hair stand on end’.She admits to having a fascination withserial killers and many of her booksdeal with this subject. Her plots areoften unusual and carry scenarios

which are chilling, exciting andmysterious. Her books deal with familyrelationships, telepathy, sadistic killersand are graphic and gory.Only one of our members couldn’t readher at all. Comments from the otherswere “dangerous and exciting plots”,“kept me on the edge of my seat”,“couldn’t put the book down although itwas frightening”, “not for everyone”.“highly recommended”, “graphic”.Titles that members have read areAFRAID TO DIE, FATAL BURN, LEFT

TO DIE and FINAL SCREAM. To seea full list of her books you can go to herwebsite, otherwise ask the Librariansfor her books if you wish to read her.She also writes in other genresincluding Romantic Suspense,Medieval and Anthologies writingsome of her books under the name ofSusan Lynn Crose. Our meeting this month will be our lastfor 2013 and we will be finding coolspots over the summer to get on withour reading. A Happy and SafeChristmas to all of our members.MEANWHILE HAPPY READING.

THANKS TO ST JOHNAMBULANCE

Ambulance Officers are hero’s in myeyes. Recently myself and my son,Terry were injured in a serious roadaccident. Harvey Ambulance arrivedon the scene and immediately wewere cared for in the mostcompassionate and professional way.I understand the frustration which wasexpressed in the article by JudyChalmers (Waroona St John) in theNovember Despatch. I wouldencourage anyone with even a fewhours to spare to join these wonderfulpeople in Waroona. Our heartfeltthanks to the officers who cared for usand safely transported us to PeelHealth Campus. Thanks also to theFire Bragade volunteers who swiftlyand efficiently cut Terry from thevehicle. Jan & Terry Wells

TheWaroonaAgriculturalSociety

held their end of year wind up andChristmas celebration on Friday 8th

November to celebrate the success ofa fantastic 2013 show and to thank allof the many volunteers and sponsorswho contribute so much time and effortand are instrumental in theorganisation of show day. PresidentEric Walmsley delivered a fantasticspeech and announced to the crowd ofapproximately 90 people that theWaroona Show is now theBiggestOne Day Country Show in Australia.A fantastic feat for our smallcommunity of Waroona and somethingthe Waroona Agricultural Society isvery proud of.Presentations were made to particularmembers of the Waroona AgriculturalSociety who contribute a huge amountof time to the society, these includedAlison Birch (Secretary), GloriaJohnson (Assist Secretary / SpaceCoordinator), Maree Ellis (VicePresident / Features), Ed Gilbert(Treasurer), Kirsty Ferraro(Promotions/Media) and EricWalmsley (President). Special mentionwas also made to all the stewards fortheir work in their respective areas.

Our stewards do an amazing job andhave a large group of volunteers whoassist them in preparing for show day.The Waroona Agricultural Society alsomade a special presentation to theAxeman’s Association for theircontribution over many years to theWaroona Show. It was agreed thatshow day would not be the samewithout the log chopping events andwe thank the members of thisassociation for their contribution. As we prepare for 2014 we would likemembers of the community to considerbecoming a committee member or amember of the Waroona AgriculturalSociety. Our committee has a greatworking relationship and we welcomenew members with an interest inhelping with the Waroona Show to joinus. Please keep your eyes opening foradvertising for the AGM which is heldin February. Alternatively families areencouraged to become members ofthe society. This does not involvecommittee responsibilities and is just amembership to the Society. Formsmay be obtained by emailing[email protected].As we sign off for another year we wishall the members of the Waroonacommunity a very safe and MerryChristmas and a Happy New Year.

Waroona Agricultural SocietyEnd of Year Celebration

the caring staff at PamCorker house Quambie Parkfor the wonderful care hereceived from them these

last two years.

WAROONA – HAMEL R.S.L.

The Waroona-Hamel R.S.L. Sub-Branch would like to thank the peopleof Waroona for their support at therecent Poppy Day appeal. Franco Family Thank The Waroona Community for their Support

Last month we ran an article aboutthe South West Bike Trek, raisingmoney for the Children’s Leukemia &Cancer Research Foundation. AWaroona family were prominent inthis fundraiser and have written us aletter to thank the WaroonaCommunity for their support.

Brad, Sandra, Fedele, Nikolas andCaprice would sincerely like to say aMASSIVE THANK YOU for all thesupport that you have given to us as a

family. Fedele and Nikolas with greatenthusiasm, with their Dad, Brad anda group of compassionate riderscompleted their 600km bike ride, forwhich they raised funds for, Childrenwith Leukaemia and Cancer. Yourgood wishes, Monetary Donationsand items that were used for raffles, have been overwhelming to receive. We are honoured to let you know thatalone the Boys raised over $15,000which is a FANTASTIC effort andwithout your support it wouldn’t have

happened, so thank you once again. This will bring this years’ amountraised to date at over $40,000 withmore sponsorship forms anddonations to be calculated into thistotal. As parents of the boys youwould understand how much thismeant to us, and of course how proudwe are to see them have suchdetermination to finish and to be ableto help those children less fortunatethan themselves. We hope that wecan count on your support again Next

On Saturday November 23rd over 60photographers of all ages turned up to theWaroona Visitor Centre & Gallery’s photographicevent. The day was a great success, the teamshad fun and over 2000 photos were taken all overthe Shire. Participants were provided withnecessities such as bottled water, sunscreen andinsect repellent then sent on their way to ‘take’Waroona and surrounds. Hospitality was a mainingredient and a complimentary all-day morningtea was provided and appreciated by all. Thephotos so generously given by localphotographers, and those who travelled fromBunbury, Mandurah, Perth and Yunderup, willprovide a great resource for the Visitor Centreand will be accessible by all on Wikipedia. A copyon hard drive will also be given to the HistoricalSociety for safekeeping for future generations. The beauty of these photos is that they will beavailable for everyone to enjoy now and into thefuture unlike photos in private collections.

WAROONA POLICE

With the Christmas Holiday Season fast approaching, it is now a good time to send a timelyreminder to residents of Waroona and Surrounds to be vigilant on our roads and around the home.Waroona Police are urging motorists to be safe in the lead up to, and over the Christmas period. Wehave seen some serious motor vehicle crashes recently on the major arterial roads leading in andout of town and on Thursday 21st November a fatal single vehicle crash in Wagerup. Please usesome of the following tips to plan your trips over the Xmas period;*Reduce risk by doing less than the speed limit;* Drive to conditions – weather and what is happening and who is on the road;*Plan appropriately so that you allow yourself time to get to your destination; don’t rush, it’s notworth it, you could harm yourself, your loved ones and other motorists;* Plan your events and remember if alcohol is being consumed, plan your return trip. Don’t drink anddrive; have a skipper or leave money aside to pay for a cab;* Use restraints, seatbelts to be worn by all occupants, children in approved properly fitted childrestraints /seats,* Do not carry persons in open load spaces (Ute trays, rear of vans without seats and restraints;* Manage fatigue, Christmas can be a very stressful time and with people attending eventsgatherings, fatigue management is an issue so ensure you have plenty of rest and don’t drive tired;Stop for rest breaks if travelling over extended distances, get out stretch your legs, have somerefreshments, don’t push on through the yawns and nods, as you and your loved ones deserve aMerry Christmas and not one you or they would want to forget.* REMEMBER DOUBLE DEMERITS will be in effect over Christmas for Drink, Seatbelt (restrainand load space) and Speed Offences.* On the topic of vigilance, ensure your houses are securely locked if out at gatherings, if you areaway for extended periods, or entertaining at home and away from an open door or window. Theftscan occur whilst people are at home but an entry point is unattended and unlocked. Ensure youdon’t advertise the new gifts/ purchases by placing large packaging outside for collection for all tosee, some packaging will alert criminals to what goodies are inside.* Lock your vehicles and sheds, thefts from vehicles and sheds are on the rise as they are often leftinsecure, yet contain high value or desirable items such as GPS units, and items of high value suchas off road motor cycles, generators, camping equipment etc.* If you are going away over the period, advise the Local Police Station of your departure and returndates and leave a contact number for yourself or a local friend or relative for Police to contact ifsomething were to occur.

Be Safe, enjoy your Christmas and see you all in the New Year. Happy Festive Season.STUART BUTCHER 9334.Waroona Police Station.22/11/2013.

RETAIL SHOP

Open 5 Days A Week

December 2013 Page 24

Online shopping threatensbiosecurityPurchasing goods via the internet hasmany attractions, from low prices tothe huge range of products, but manyrisks attached to online shoppinghave also been identified andpublicised. One problem which hasnot received enough attention, however, is the fact that plant andanimal species which could threatenour natural environment, agriculturalindustries and even public amenitiesare available online. Whether orderingfrom businesses based outsideWestern Australia or using localtrading and exchange websites, it isimportant for home gardeners and petfanciers to be aware of the situation.Importing aquarium fishSome people may wonder why certainexotic fish in their aquarium couldpossibly pose a threat to WA’s riversand oceans. But when domesticcircumstances change or the originalowners lose interest, the aquariummay become a burden and thetemptation is to dump the fish in thenearest waterway. Once exotic fishbecome established in the wild it isdifficult, or even impossible, toeradicate them. The Department ofAgriculture and Food, WesternAustralia (DAFWA) recently received

reports that illegal fish are beingbought from internet sites. TheDepartment of Fisheries (DOF) hasbanned certain species from beingkept or imported into WA. Visitwww.fish.wa.gov.au to view DOF’snoxious fish list and access its WAPestWatch application which can be

downloaded free. The app helpspeople to report sightings of aquaticpests. Alternatively ring FishWatch on1800 815 507. A tendency forinvasiveness is not the only dangerassociated with exotic fish. Theaquarium trade is also a source ofexotic pathogens, bacteria anddiseases that could wreck Australia’sfreshwater and marine ecosystems.Water weedsWhen aquariums are emptied theircontents often include aquatic plants, and for some reason people who cleanout their garden pond also seem tothink they are doing nature a favour byputting their excess water plants in the

local lake. Recently DAFWA wasadvised that salvinia (Salvinia molesta)had been sighted in a High Wycombehousing estate pond. The initial reportwas received by DOF’s WA PestWatchapp mentioned above. Salvinia, originating from Brazil, is one of theworld’s worst water weeds. It multipliesrapidly to form dense mats, preventinglight and oxygen from entering thewater and thus killing native pond life.In waterways it can ruin activities suchas swimming, boating and recreationalfishing. Yet in the last couple of yearsDAFWA has discovered severalpeople selling salvinia on a populartrading website!Other plants advertisedMany invasive terrestrial plants aresold online, such as Mexican feathergrass (Nassella tenuissima) and ivygourd (Coccinia grandis). A number ofbulb species listed on the websites ofeastern states businesses can alsobecome serious weeds if they escapefrom the garden. However, the

potential for invasiveness is not theonly reason for certain bulbs to be aproblem. Some are hosts of diseasesthat could affect important crops grownin WA. Star of Bethlehem(Ornithogalum umbellatum) bulbshave been prohibited entry into WA forsome time because this species is thealternative host for barley rust.Consignments of onions, garlic, leeks, chives, spring onions and shallotswhich enter WA from the easternstates have to be certified as inspectedand found to be free from white rot andonion rust, while those from SouthAustralia must also be certified ascoming from a crop grown in an areafree from onion smut. It is the risk toour cropping systems which makes itillegal to import non-edible members ofthe onion family in case they arecarrying these diseases. Easternstates companies offer ornamentalalliums for sale online, but do not betempted to order.

It then requests the customer to print a labelbefore they can collect the article from the local post office. The customer is also requested to remit a payment first, inorder to be able to print the article label. This email hasnot originated from Australia Post but appears to be targeting customers. Australia Post doesnot request customers to provide personal information to remit a payment for parcel collection. If a customer receives this email, they should delete it.Where a customer has fallen victim to the scam, they should report the matter to SCAMwatch at theAustralian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) via ph 1300 795 995.Returning Incorrectly Addressed MailOver the counter please….In the event that you receive some incorrectly addressed mail, it is most helpful to us if youcan hand it back in over the counter. If mail is just put back in the mail slot we are then left to interpret how/why it hasbeen returned. eg it may have the correct address on it, but was delivered incorrectly. This can sometimes lead to a'loop' where the mail is looked at by different staff and 're delivered etc..Prompt Parcel Pickup PleaseJust a reminder that Australia Post Policy is that all parcels should be returned if they have not been picked up within5 days. We understand that some of our customers are not able to pickup within this time frame and can generallyhold parcels a little longer if need be. Extended delay of parcel pickup can however cause storage issues for us,particularly if parcels are large. As Christmas is a particularly busy time for us we'd really appreciate it if you can pickup your parcels as soon as possible.Business Hours Over ChristmasWaroona LPO will be closing for Christmas at the end of business on December 24th and not reopening for businessuntil MONDAY December 30th. PARADISEIt was an old shack with a tin roof

And a wooden frame10-40 plot number, no fancy name.

There was no running, water, we had no phone,But there were acres of paradise for us kids to roam. One day we had visitors, they came more and more.

We heard them talking about iron ore.Now we live in a brick house,

In a street with a number and a nameBut somehow to use kids

It don’t seem the same

Waroona Veterinary NewsKids and Dogs: How to prevent a disaster

Too often we hear about children being bitten or attacked, and more often than not the dogs involved are destroyed.Unfortunately what we don’t hear often enough is that most attacks occur in the child’s own home, and often are caused bythe family pet.The most common reasons for such attacks are that the children are left unsupervised with a dog or no one has noticedthat the dog is unhappy with what the child is doing.Children should never be left unsupervised with a dog. I would nottrust any dog with small children. Trusting a dog to behave EXACTLY how you think it will behave when you’re not there isdangerous. On the upside nothing bad happens, however the potential downside doesn’t bear thinking about.Dogs rarely bite without warning. There are several possible reasons why a dog may bite a child. These include: *The dogis protecting something such as a possession, food or water dish, puppies, a resting place or its owner or the owner'sproperty. *The child has done something to provoke or frighten the dog (e.g., hugging the dog, moving into the dog's space, leaning or stepping over the dog, trying to take something from the dog).*The dog is old and grumpy (possibly sore from arthritis) and has no patience for the actions of a child.*The dog is injured or the child has hurt or startled it by stepping on it, poking it or pulling its fur, tail or ears. *The dog hasnot learned bite inhibition and bites hard by accident when the child offers food or a toy to the dog or the child and dog areengaging in rough play and the dog gets overly excited.*The dog views the child as a prey item because the child is running and/ or screaming near the dog or riding a bicycle orotherwise moving past the dog. There are always warning signs before a bite occurs, but these can be very subtle and may be missed. A dog may appearto tolerate being repeatedly manhandled by a child and one day bites, surprising everyone. Sometimes the warnings havegone on for months or even years before the dog finally loses its tolerance and bites. Signs that you should take veryseriously that indicate that the dog is saying "I have been very patient with this child, but I am nearing the end of mypatience", include: *The dog gets up and moves away from the child or turns its head away from the child.*The dog looks at you with a pleading expression or you can see the "whites" of the dog’s eyes.*The dog yawns or licks their lips repeatedly while the child approaches or is interacting with them.*The dog suddenly starts scratching, biting or licking himself or does a big "wet dog shake" after the child stops touchinghim. You may think that your dog loves to have the children climbing all over him and hugging him, but if you see any of thesesigns, then the dog may bite if the dog feels they have no other way of defending themselves. It is important to intervene ifyou notice any of these signs. If you have concerns about the safety of your child, or your dog displays behaviour that concerns you, seek help from yourveterinarian and a qualified canine behaviour specialist. Frosina Duckin RVN

WEST-OZSEAFOOD

There is often debate atthe Club about whichPennant Team is thebetter of the two, theLadies or the Men. On

current achievements you would haveto say the Ladies. Over the last threeseasons, they won Division four twice, followed up with winning Division threeand are now in about third position inDivision two. Whereas the Men havefluctuated for many, many years inDivision three and only made thegrand final last year for the first time in19 years. I firmly believe there is a verygood reason for this difference andthat is the Ladies are more committedto their bowls.. Until the Men becomemore committed then their dream of aFlag is just a dream. The Championship Mixed Pairs washeld recently and the Captain, BennyGoodman organised a greatcompetition. Ten teams competed andthe competition was intense. The finalwas played between the pair of AdrianThrelfo & Hazel McCall and Bob Waide& Carol Thomlinson. Everyone stayedback to watch the final which was of agreat standard. Bob and Carol werethe eventual winners. Also last Sunday saw us run the DrawnMixed Pairs, sponsored by our Patron,Neil Williams. Only 8 teams competed, which was a disappointment, but the

Waroona Bowling Club Newscompetition was close and hard. Theeventual winners were Denis Tyler andJoan Scott, with Bob Waide and JuneMaughan running second and BobClark and Lorraine Bawden third. The Men have a Wednesday OpenTriples on December 18th. This issponsored by Rural Weed, which isKevin MacDonald’s company. Quite afew teams are already entered, so if youare interested, make sure you nominatesoon. Thanks Kevin for your generoussponsorship. The next Club Championship for themen is the Pairs which starts onSunday, January 12th. Start thinkingabout it now. The Ladies have theirChampionship Triples on Dec. 5th andthen their Pairs on January 9th .TheBendigo Bank Community Bowls hasbeen going well, though no one otherthan the organisers seem to know howthe handicap system works. However, the evenings have been very enjoyableand we all thank the Bendigo Bank fortheir sponsorship.Friday nights is still worth a visit with themany raffles and meat draws. TheMembers Barrel draw is at $450, butyou have to be there to win it and theJoker is now at $2,500. Joker tickets areobtained with each drink until 7.30pm.All the meals as usual are veryreasonable. Why not come and join us?
