The 2019 James Beard FoundationAwards are in the books, and Chicagochefs and restaurateurs took homefour prizes. The Lyric Opera Chicagoplayed host to another awards gala,with Boka Restaurant Group earningOutstanding Restaurateur, their firstwin after four nominations. Companyfounders Rob Katz and Kevin Boehmcelebrated with their family andfriends through the night at Girl & theGoat in the West Loop where IronChef Stephanie Izard was seendancing up a storm with guests.

Rahm Emanuel delivered his finalspeech of his mayoral term at the galaand took the opportunity to ripPresident Donald Trump. Emanuelreferred to Trump’s practice of servingfast food to championship sportsteams. Earlier this year, that emergingtradition was criticized by AlineaGroup co-founder Nick Kokonas whofelt serving fast food was insulting.Emanuel’s team proceeded to tweetthe remarks. During his speech,Emanuel said he didn’t care about thepublic’s perception as he would besoon out of a job. Mayor-elect LoriLightfoot’s inauguration is set for May20.

“Fast food does not belong at 1600Pennsylvania Avenue,” Emanuel said.“And besides that you don’t belong at1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.”

As for Boka, crowds packed Girl & theGoat on Monday night for thecompany’s customary after party.Earlier, Boehm — a huge Cubs fan(Boka has a restaurant, Dutch andDoc’s, across the street from WrigleyField) — said he received a textmessage on Sunday from team GMJed Hoyer after the team’s seventh-straight win.

“Hoyer texted me and said it was aharbinger for Monday,” Boehm said.

Meanwhile, Best Chef: Great Lakeswinners Beverly Kim and Johnny Clarkof Parachute were in awe of their win.Kim was sobbing while accepting theaward. The wife-husband team havebeen nominated in past years.

“I would be happy for everybody onthat list,” Kim said. “That’s why I didn’teven think about the speech; I justwanted to be in the moment.”
