Our youth program is happening
Rabbi Nancy Rita Myers November 2014
4
This is the second year for our high school
youth group (9-12th graders), known as
WAFTY, and junior youth group program
(7th & 8th graders). We are affiliated with
NFTY which is the national reform Jewish
youth movement that provides meaningful and
engaging youth experiences for teens. Integral
to this program is teaching our youth to be
leaders by creating and running their own
programs with guidance from their advisor.
Some of our 9th and 10th graders just came back
from a wonderful NFTY Fall weekend retreat
and will be bringing their enthusiasm and love
of Judaism to teen programming here at
Temple Beth David.
We are blessed to have Michael Cohen, our
rabbinical intern, to serve as advisor for both
our senior and junior youth groups. Michael is
also our 9th grade teacher on Tuesday evenings
and will be teaching our Sunday school family
classes. He is a third year rabbinical student at
Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of
Religion in Los Angeles.
If you have questions about our youth
program, you can contact him at
[email protected] or Ter ry Kr ieger ,
our youth trustee, [email protected].
We are especially thankful first and
foremost for financial support from our TBD
Foundation. They have always been
supportive of our youth program and we are
grateful. We have also received support from a
Federation grant and our religious school. We
are looking forward to a great year of
programming, fun, and celebrating Judaism
with our teens.

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!
By Ruth Kramer, Sisterhood President
Sisterhood is busy with plans for the
Chanukah Carnival – latkes, Judaica shop,
vendor tables and all the rest that goes into
making a wonderful day for our Temple
family. There will be new gift items for you
to purchase for your holiday needs and lots
of fun for all. We will have face painting
for the kids and you will want to visit the
bake sale table and purchase cookies,
brownies and jelly donuts to enjoy - even
before the first candle is lit. This is a fund-
raising activity for Sisterhood but more
importantly, it is a fun day for our kids of all
ages. If you would like to volunteer to help
please call Renée Dorfman, Jackie Hewitt,
Edie Schwartz or Doris Franco.
“Domestic Violence” was the topic for the
Sisterhood brunch, held Sunday morning,
October 26 at 9:30. A full and delicious
brunch was served and our guest speaker
was the fascinating Stephanie Domurat,
Community Education and Grant Writing
Manager of Human Options. This
important event was open to both men and
women and was not to be missed!
Generous items of women’s and children’s
wear were donated by our members and
distributed by the Human Options
organization. Kudos to Debbie Lelchuk for
organizing this wonderful and informative
event.
We often hear from folks in our
congregation who say they did not know
about a certain event that would be of
interest to them. All our events are
published in the Shavua Tov and the
Megillah which you get in
your email and are listed in the weekly
programs at Friday night services but you
have to open your email and scan through
these publications to see if you are
interested. There are always posters and
flyers to advertise each event as well. A
tentative Sisterhood calendar has been and
distributed to our membership via email so
please check your email and mark your
calendar.

Temple Member SPOTLIGHT:
The Roth Family
~ written by: Donna Litvak & Keri Gee Semmelman
This month we introduce you to Jeff and Teri Roth whose lives began on opposite ends of the United States. Jeff was born and raised in southern California and Teri was from New York yet by kindergarten her family moved to Los Angeles. Judaism was a vibrant part of Jeff’s childhood. He attended Temple Beth El where his parents were married and later Jeff and Teri would marry there too. Teri’s Jewish upbringing was less formal which led to her finding Judaism on her own. Ironically, there was one aspect of Judaism Teri wasn’t too thrilled about while going through college at UCLA–their Hillel dances. Yet, somehow she was convinced to go to one and recalled beforehand saying she’d never go to another. That was the night she met her beshert Jeff, also a UCLA student! After graduating college – Teri with a degree in Social Psychology and Jeff who completed studies in Biology – they got married and moved to New York in order for Jeff to attend medical school. They moved back to sunny California as soon as they could! Jeff went on to become a physician and senior partner with HealthCare Partners Medical Group. He also has a passion for barbecuing, gardening (with over 50 rare flowers, cacti, and fruit trees filling their backyard), and doing research in natural history. While scrapbooking and interior decorating are just a couple of Teri’s hobbies, she works tirelessly as an Emergency Shelter Home (ESH) provider. With her family’s help, she has provided safe and loving care to 24 at-risk infants over the years. The babies stay with the Roths until long-term placements in foster families are found. Jeff and Teri have three kids of their own who they are very proud of: Amanda (28) works for the world’s largest architectural firm, Brandon (25), and Madelyn (8) who currently sings in the Temple’s junior choir and enjoys art, horseback riding, and cheerleading for a local youth football league. She also has received many character awards and excels academically. Amid their busy lives, Jeff and Teri enjoy collecting books and getting them autographed. This has led to their meeting famous authors, astronauts, celebrities, presidents, dignitaries, and even a member of the royal family. The Roths are also over-the-moon for Disneyland having gone to the park in Paris, Florida, and
California. Trips to Disney Tokyo and Hong Kong are on their bucket list. They’ve already been on eight Disney cruises with a ninth set for this summer. At Temple Beth David, they very much enjoy family Shabbat services and being in an active family Chavurah. With their love for travel they, with Madelyn, joined in the congregation’s most recent trip to Israel. That journey was especially meaningful for them because Jeff’s grandmother and previous generations of her family were born in Zefat, Israel, which was one of the many highlights of the trip. For a couple who has done so much with their lives, it’s no surprise they live by the profound motto: “If the only prayer you say is thank you, that’ll be enough.” Another favorite is: “G-d has bigger plans for you than you have for yourself.” On a lighter side, Jeff says he lives by the motto: “If momma isn’t happy, then no one is happy!” For those who know the doting couple, you can see they possess a very special love and care for one another, for their whole family, and for so many in need. Their cheerful smiles, the bond they have with their family and friends, and the awards they’ve received from their local community tell it all! While they have accomplished so much, they never forget to remember how fortunate they are. The Temple Beth David is fortunate to have the Roth family as caring members!
November 2014

October has been a month filled with lots of fun and adventure for all those in our preschool. We have had
field trips, cooking projects and bowling while learning all the way!
Miss Susan’s class filled the month with creating a wonderful color book. Each day the children have painted purple grapes, orange
pumpkins and brown bears. It sure has been a colorful month for all those little hands. The children had fun making a Green Monster
cake, from their favorite story.
Miss Lizette’s class created a grocery store in their class. They enjoy the interactive learning they have with their classmates. It’s a fun way to learn! The children also explored the letters E, F, G, and
H this month.
Miss Vanessa’s class had lots of messy fun opening and exploring a pumpkin they picked from the pumpkin patch. It was gooey, slimy, and messy but we had fun digging out all the seeds. The children have continue to work on their number book and will be finishing
them up in early November and will be able to share them with their families.
Miss April’s class went on two field trips this month. They learned
all about the cycle of a pumpkin and even rolled some pumpkins down the hall for some bowling fun. Some of the children have
already received rewards for learning their high frequency words and all the children have become reader rabbits!
Stop by in November!

A LOOK BACK
Family Fun Night on Saturday, October 18, was a lot of fun with 40 members and their friends of all ages joining together for games, laughter, Havdalah, and relaxation. The toddlers enjoyed puppet shows, singing, dress up, and storytelling. The youth and teens had fun in the mega bounce house and hanging out. And, the adults relaxed as they played board games, cards, and gabbed. All enjoyed a yummy dessert ice cream/fruit bar and singing with Cantor Nancy, Sable Cantus, and Scott Whiteside. Some even watched the entire Frozen movie. It was a great end to Shabbat, a wonderful sense of togetherness, and a reminder of how great it is to raise a family at Temple Beth David! (See photos on next page.)

In 2015 The American Zionist Movement
will hold an election to determine the
United States Jewish representation at the
World Zionist Congress, Zionism's highest
legislative body. It is important to
Progressive Judaism and our Reform
Movement because it will determine what
support Reform and all progressive Judaism
worldwide will receive in the next four
years.
From January 15th through April 30th
2015, the American Zionist Movement will
hold open voting for all American Jews to
determine the United States’ delegation to
the 2015 World Zionist Organization. Every
Jew has the opportunity to vote for the
platform that best represents his or her
personal views of what the Congress should
achieve.
The Congress is proportioned Israel 38%,
United States of America 29%, other
countries of the Diaspora 33%. The latest
Congress had 500 delegates plus 38 from
the former Soviet Union. The next
Congress will have a similar number, so the
U. S. will have 145 delegates. The
composition of the Congress has both
financial and policy implications in Israel,
as leadership positions are determined, and
resources are directed to recipients in Israel
based on the power each party holds within
the Congress, and the policy positions of
each party. These elections are the
strongest way for American Reform Jews to
promote and encourage the ideals of justice,
equality and democracy in Israel itself and
help build the kind of Jewish state we all
know is possible.
ARZA is asking Reform Jews to go to their
web site (www.arza.org ) and pledge to
vote for the ARZA-Representing Reform
Judaism slate in the 2015 election. A vote
for the slate means voting for an Israeli
society in which all denominations are
treated fairly and with respect whatever
their Jewish denomination. It will allow
men and women to pray, work, and live
together as equals deserving of the same
respect and honor. Your vote for ARZA
will be a vote for a path to lasting peace,
security and stability for Israel, the
Palestinians, and the surrounding Middle
East region although that road may be a
long one. There is much at stake if we want
to determine that the values we hold dear
will become reality in the Israel that we
love.
By pledging to vote ARZA you’ll receive
useful information about the elections to
pass on to your family and friends
Note that last month the article called the
latest Israel Defense Force Operation in
Gaza "Cast Lead". That was the 2008
operation. The correct name is the
"Protective Edge."
