Darwins nearest neighbours are some ofthe great cities of Southeast Asia. It is closerto seven major Asian cities than it is to any
Australian capital. CDU is the only universitybased in the Northern Territory, one ofAustralias eight States and Territories.

CDU is a dual-sector university, which meanswe offer a full spectrum of education andtraining opportunities in Higher Educationand in Vocational Education and Training(VET). The diversity of our study programsand delivery methods is rare amongAustralias universities.
We offer Higher Education Bachelors andMasters degrees, and advanced researchDoctorates. More than 50% of our HigherEducation students undertake their studieson line from their home bases acrossAustralia and overseas.
Some 21,000 students study with CDUand almost two-thirds of these are enrolledin VET programs. The 600 internationalstudents who are enrolled with CDU arestudying in both VET and Higher Educationprograms. We also deliver training into morethan 170 sites in remote locations acrossthe Territory.

The research excellence at CDU is recognisedin a new international ranking of universities.The Spain-based SCImago Institutions 2009World Report published the rst index ofinstitutions that are active in research,and ranked CDU in the top ve Australianuniversities. SCImago employed variousmeasures to create the index, including
the number of times a universitysscholarly papers are quoted in the workof other researchers.
Our annual research income is $26 millionand almost 40% of our academic staffhold PhDs.

Innovative Research Universities:CDU is a member of the network ofseven Australian universities committedto conducting research of national andinternational standing.
Flinders University: The Universitys medicalprogram partnership with Flinders Universityin South Australia is about to deliver medicaltraining wholly within the Northern Territoryfor the rst time. The rst generation ofdoctors to be trained in the Territory willbegin the program at CDU in 2011. The Centre
for Remote Health, based in Central Australia,is also a joint venture with Flinders University.
Marine science: The Australian NationalUniversity, the Australian Institute of MarineScience, the NT Government and CDU aremembers of an innovative partnership thatdelivers cooperative research, academic andtraining activities, and expanded researchinfrastructure, to ensure sustainable andcommunity-friendly development of tropicalmarine resources.
Navitas Ltd is a global education providerand industry leader in pre-university andalternative pathway programs for people
within Australia and overseas. CDU andNavitas Ltd are developing a program ofeducation and training activities for peoplein the Northern Territory and the region.
ACL provides high quality English languagetraining, settlement and related services. Thecentre caters for international and domesticstudents, and migrants and refugees settlingin Australia. The ACL English Centre is locatedon the Casuarina campus.
Northern Territory Government:The Territory relies on a robust andresponsive university to help drive itseconomic and social development. TheNorthern Territory Government and CDUPartnership is a formal agreement thatis unique for an Australian universityand supports education, research, policydevelopment and program delivery.

Governance
The Charles Darwin University Council isour governing body. The senior executivestructure is headed by the Vice-Chancellor,who is supported by the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Researchand International; Pro Vice-Chancellor, VET;Pro Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous Leadership;and Executive Director, Corporate Services
and Business Development.
Campuses and centres
More than 1400 staff are employed at oureight campuses and centres at Darwin,Alice Springs, Palmerston, Katherine,Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy, Jabiru and
Yulara. The main campus at Casuarina isset in 56 ha of parkland close to the pristinebeaches in Darwins northern suburbs. It has
all the facilities expected of a 21stCentury university.
CDU also has substantial land holdings inthe Territory including a 770 sq km workingcattle station that operates as a trainingfacility for VET students.
Library
The central library is located on theCasuarina campus, while Alice Springs and
Palmerston campuses are also equippedwith library facilities. The Casuarina Libraryis a modern facility located at the heart ofthe campus and supports both studentsand researchers.
CDU libraries hold almost 250,000 booksand 40,000 general items.
International students
More than 600 international students from52 countries study at CDU, making it one ofthe most culturally diverse universities inAustralia. We provide a safe environment,strong academic support and a socialprogram that helps international studentsto develop friendships in the widerUniversity community.
On-campus accommodation
North Flinders International House (NFIH)is a popular accommodation choice among
international students. It is home to about270 students, and plans are well progressedto expand on-campus accommodationbecause of the growing demand. NFIHprovides students with a range of freecommunal facilities such as kitchens,bathrooms, laundries, computer lab,swimming pool, BBQ facilities, games room,study room, TV room and in-room wirelessinternet access.
Recreation
Sport: CDU Sport provides exercise andrecreational options to the University andwider communities. CDU Sport FitnessUnlimited is a fully equipped, air-conditionedgym where people exercise individually orthrough group tness classes. The widevariety of sporting clubs helps studentsdevelop new friendships while they pursue
a healthy lifestyle. The Casuarina campusboasts extensive playing elds.
Gardens: The Chinese Garden and IndonesianGarden are tranquil areas on the Casuarinacampus that have been developed withthe assistance of government, businessand enthusiastic volunteers from DarwinsChinese and Indonesian communities. Thegardens reect CDUs close relationship withChina and Indonesia, and the multi-culturalnature of the wider Darwin community.

Charles Darwin University Art Collection:This exceptional permanent collectioncomprises 2000 works of art and has a
permanent home in a new, purpose-builtgallery on Casuarina campus. The Collectiondates back more than 30 years and focuseson art from northern Australia and SoutheastAsia. It features paintings, drawings andworks of mixed media by Indigenous andnon-Indigenous Australian artists, sculptureand ceramics, bark paintings, a collection ofIndigenous material culture items, and worksby Southeast Asian artists.
Cultural heart of northern Australia
The University has a vital role in the NorthernTerritorys rich cultural life, particularly in the
areas of music and art.
Darwin Symphony Orchestra: The DarwinSymphony Orchestra is the only residentsymphony orchestra in the Northern Territoryand is based at Casuarina campus. Theorchestra has 75 members and performsin the Territory and overseas.
Northern Editions:Located on the Casuarinacampus, Northern Editions is the longestestablished publisher of limited editionprints in northern Australia. Many etchings,screenprints, lithographs and linocutsproduced since 1993 have been acquired bymajor art galleries, museums, corporate andprivate collections around the world. Workinglargely through art centres in AustralianIndigenous communities or selectedgalleries, the printmaking studio and galleryprovides artists with the opportunity to havetheir art work editioned for display and sale.

The Northern Territory covers almost 1.4million sq km or about 17% of Australiasland mass. Its dramatic landscapes, whichspan tropical wetlands in the north andred deserts in the south, provide a fertileenvironment for our research interests,and partnerships and alliances. More than200,000 people live in the Territory andabout one-third are Indigenous Australians.
Darwin is the hub of business, industry,education and culture in Australias north.Located just 12 degrees south of theEquator, Darwin is often described asAustralias gateway to Southeast Asia.People from more than 70 nationalities callDarwin home. The city has vibrant culturalgroups that routinely engage with CDU andits international students.
Darwin is a harbour city with a central rolein Australias future industrial growth and inthe ongoing expansion of the entire AustraliaAsian region. The city has long beenAustralias pre-eminent port for live cattleexport and is now becoming the regionsprimary service and supply base for offshoreand onshore oil and gas projects. Japaneseenergy giant Inpex Corporation is investing
$25 billion in developing the local naturalgas industry.
The signicant growth in exploration,mining, and oil and gas projects in theregion, including activity in the Timor Sea,presents an immediate opportunity forDarwin to further develop its logisticalsupport capacity. Other importantindustries include mining, tourism andagricultural production.
The Northern Territory has a strongeconomy. Forecaster Access Economicsreports an annual gross state productgrowth to 2012-13 of3.8% for the Territory.Its economic growth is expected to be thehighest in Australia and well above thenational growth of2.6%.
During the past decade extensive investmentin infrastructure has been made to support
Darwins industry and business. With itsinternational airport terminal, connectionsto the national road and rail networksand world-class seaport facilities, the cityis recognised as the linchpin that linksAustralias trade, communications, transportand logistics networks to those of SoutheastAsia and beyond.
