Welcome to chai life
TogeTher We’ll Do exTraorDinary Things
once again, i am honored to welcome our Jewish community to a
new season at the Jewish Federation of south Palm Beach County.
For a 34th year, we’re poised to raise the vital funds that will care for
those in need, build community for a bright Jewish future, stand up
for israel and respond in times of crisis around the world.
With Matt levin at the helm, this season also begins a new and
auspicious era for our Federation. The optimism, esprit de corps
and momentum are unmistakable in our board room and committee
meetings, throughout our Federation building and interactions - as
we plan and move ahead on behalf of those who must depend on us
now and in the future. i am thrilled to have Matt as my partner, and
our community is fortunate to have him as a leader.
looking forward to all we will do together,
ellen r. sarnoff
Chair, Federation Board of Directors
after a few months on board, i’m even more proud to be leading
this organization that fulfills the most essential role of community:
bringing people together to take care of each other. it’s exciting to
collaborate on developing what, with 130,000 people, has truly the
greatest potential of any Jewish community in the country. To fulfill
our mission amid ever-growing needs, our reach must be far broader
as well as deeper. in the process, we’re coming together to build a
greater, more vibrant and cohesive Jewish community.
Together, we’ll experience our community’s joys and celebrate
israel@65 as well as face the challenges and dangers ahead.
Together, we’ll build on our Federation’s long track record and set
the course for a strong future. i look forward to hearing from you at
[email protected] about how we can work together for the
benefit of our community and our people.

learning is a lifelong process – if you’re lucky.
yahel, 16, lives three miles from gaza. Thousands of rockets
have fallen in her neighborhood during the past few years.
The one place where she can escape the pervasive fear
is her school, sha’ar hanegev regional high school. “My
school is kind of a special school for two reasons: the way
that we learn here and the place,” yahel explains.
in addition to literature, math and science, yahel and her
classmates learn critical life lessons. Teachers explain the
importance of acceptance and tolerance, despite the
hostilities happening right outside their classrooms. “We
learn to be ourselves here and we learn to find our identity.”
Alex, 19, who was born and raised in Cherkassy, Ukraine,
did not grow up with a strong sense of Jewish identity,
although he was aware that he came from a Jewish family.
“My parents never told me about the traditions,” he says.
rather, it was his grandparents who informed him that he
was Jewish. he began attending events at the Jewish youth
center in his hometown, where he learned about customs and
holidays. “Without the youth center, it would be tough for me
to keep in touch with my peers, keep up with all the events in
israel, all the traditions and celebrations of Jewish holidays.”
beth, 68, learned she could go on. after losing her
beloved husband of almost 40 years to cancer, she
cried every day. “i thought the tears would never end,”
she recalls. “The pain was unbearable.” Then someone
suggested she visit the Phyllis & harvey sandler Center
for Jewish life enhancement at the adolph & rose levis
Jewish Community Center, a non-profit community
agency of the Jewish Federation of south Palm Beach
County. “i don’t know what i would have done without
them,” she freely admits.
The real test lies in understanding our connection to something larger than ourselves.liFeleSSonS

Take note
The most important lesson in all of this is, of course, that we
are not alone.
For more than 30 years, the Jewish Federation of south
Palm Beach County has been responding to the needs of
our community – here at home, in israel and in 70 other
countries around the world.
every day, through the amazing network of agencies and
programs that make up the sarah & Max Pechter Center for
local safety net services, Federation supports programs
that feed, clothe, shelter, counsel, rescue and respect people.
Through our Jewish life & learning giving Center, we invest
in the strength of our people by making experiences that
build and bolster Jewish identity, enhance Jewish life and
make Jewish learning available to everyone. We are part of a
family that stretches around the world and, through the israel
& our global Family giving Center, Federation stands with our
brothers and sisters in israel and reaches into every corner
of the Jewish community - inspiring lifelong connections,
breaking the cycle of poverty and responding to emergencies.
and every day, generous donors to the Federation’s annual
Campaign learn what it feels like to make a difference in
someone’s life. Many trust Federation to channel their gift
where it is needed most; others prefer to direct their gift to
one of our giving Centers.

never has one gift done so much for so many
The generosity of our donors allows us to ensure that
yahel and her fellow students can study in safety. With
the support of World orT and Federation annual
Campaign dollars, a brand-new building for sha’ar
hanegev regional high school is under construction. The
reinforced structure will protect the students, while state-
of-the-art technology centers and smart classrooms will
give them access to the tools they need to succeed.
yahel and her friends love their school because it offers
them a safe place, a rich educational environment, and a
path to their futures. “When we come to school, we feel
safer than in our kibbutz, in our home,” she says.
When Beth turned to the Federation in her hour of need,
we responded. “it saved me; it really did,” she says. The
levis JCC sandler Center offers a special camaraderie that
comes from shared interests and experiences. arts, learning
and culture thrive as adults of all ages and faiths gather and
connect with others who enjoy a wide variety of engaging
activities, classes, games and travel experiences.
Thanks to support from Federation, alex has been able
to pursue his interest in learning about Judaism, and
eventually get to israel and experience it for himself. “i
went on a Birthright trip, which helped me realize the
most that i belong there,” he says. “in israel, you can
approach a stranger, ask them something, and they would
help you. it’s not a big deal. you feel that connection.”
having just graduated from university, alex will soon
travel to israel again in order to spend five months
learning hebrew. “i feel like it’s the country for me, and
i’m going to do whatever it takes to go there and to help
myself and help the country.”

It’s All in theCaring, Commitment, Generosity Phyllis & Harvey Sandler, Inspiring by Example
some children inherit their
mother’s laugh or their father’s
brown eyes. Phyllis and harvey
sandler’s five children and eleven
grandchildren appear to have
inherited the family’s passion
for philanthropy. “it’s so much a
part of me it’s in my Dna,” says
daughter robin rubin.
Watching the deep affection
and enthusiasm as sandler
generations greet each other
at events, work together on
causes and welcome others,
it’s no surprise that south
Palm Beach County has such
a vibrant, inspiring leading
philanthropic family. Their
profound compassion and
generosity visibly radiate right
from Phyllis and harvey at the
core, into their extended family
and throughout the world.
Family:

“I am absolutely passionate about improving the well-
being of all,” Phyllis says. “and when i see what my
children and harvey’s are doing, how they are giving
back, i am so proud.”
“our children and grandchildren have learned by
example, coming to events and conferences, being part
of family discussions,” says harvey. “There’s no magic
formula. it’s how we live our life.”
robin and her sister, amy ross, have become key community
leaders, chairing some of the Federation’s most prominent
events. robin’s son, Jonathan, volunteers with children who have
special needs at the adolph & rose levis JCC. Phyllis just brought
amy’s daughter Brittany to our lions’ visit to the 911 Memorial
and Jewish Museum in nyC before the international lion of
Judah Conference. ali, daughter of Phyllis’s son larry and andrea
schnurmacher, loved her recent Birthright israel trip so much, she’s
headed to a semester at Tel
aviv University in January.
harvey’s sons, ricky and
andrew sandler, are new
york-based philanthropists.
“My dad taught me about
giving back from a very
early age,” said ricky,
on receiving the young
leaders award from new
york Federation’s Wall
street & Financial services
Division. he also hosts
children and coaches from
the israeli Tennis Centers
for disadvantaged youth,
a program to which his
son Justin donated most
of his Bar Mitzvah money.
ricky and andrew were
instrumental in building
a new hillel Center at
University of Wisconsin-Madison. andrew also serves on the
board of the sid Jacobson JCC, where he was honored.
“From the start, they see how they can make a difference,”
says Phyllis. “They see it, they feel it and they do it. you can’t
tell or force them. you can show them the way.”
Phyllis and harvey found their way in the wake of a
devastating illness. harvey remembers the phone call he got
in 1991, nine months after the couple’s wedding, informing
him that he had a brain tumor. The night before his 11-hour
operation, the sandlers pledged their lives to helping others
if harvey survived. his recovery has been a remarkable gift,
one which the couple has gratefully accepted and joyously
paid forward. Their Foundation has given $40 million to over
200 charities, including the Jewish Federation of south Palm
Beach County, where the sandlers are the largest donor in
the history of our annual Campaigns. among other local
philanthropic projects, they’ve named a new Cancer Pavilion
at Boca raton regional hospital, a school for Jewish
learning at Congregation B’nai israel, and the Center for
Jewish life enhancement at the levis JCC.
“i believe in looking for the gifts that are hidden in every
adversity,” says Phyllis. “Unable to continue as head of
sandler Capital Management, harvey found new meaning in
life through our philanthropy. his illness brought our newly
blended families together. We moved to Florida to help his
recovery, found a wonderful new community, and three of
our children followed us. We got to be part of their families’
daily lives here in the winter, and spend time with our other
children and grandchildren up north in the summer. attitude
is everything. you create your own life.”
“Phyllis is the visionary, i’m the
treasurer,” says harvey. “it’s a
great partnership.”
“in recognition of their
enthusiastic support for our
crucial mission to help Jews
locally, in israel and throughout
the world, we’ve named
our most important annual
fundraiser the sandler Family
Major gifts event,” says ellen r.
sarnoff, Chair of the Federation
Board. “Their example inspires
our community even more
every year.”
“it’s an honor to have this
highlight named for us,” says
harvey. “The Federation knows
where the need is. They can
allocate their funds to the right
place at the right time.”
When asked what they would say to the Federation’s other
most generous donors, harvey quickly asserts, “give. give. give.
give until it feels sooooo good. Make an investment in your
community – this is where you live!”
“My grandma said, ‘if all the Jews stay connected there can
never be another holocaust,’” adds robin. “and the Federation
connects us with all the Jewish people,” her mother continues.
“There’s another way of defining wealth,” says Phyllis.
“it’s not what you have when you die, it’s what you’ve
given away, the lives you’ve helped and the good you’ve
done. ask yourself, ‘have i made a difference in the world
because i lived?’”
It’s All in the
ur children and grandchildren have learned by example, coming to events and conferences, being a part of family discussions,” says Harvey. “There’s no magic formula. It’s how we live our life.”

Together We Do extraordinary Things.
Could there be a better theme for our
annual Campaign? Together, every
year, our Federation’s generous do-
nors sustain and better the lives of so
many in need – in so many extraordi-
nary ways.
and this year we’re reaching far into our community with
some extraordinary new opportunities for more people
to get involved and experience how it feels to make a
difference at all levels of giving. From special programs
for our most generous King David society donors to
our new Community-wide event, from the launch of our
Business & Professional Division to an exciting range of
young adult Division activities, we’re building commu-
nity and growing our campaign as never before. Find
out more right here in the pages of Chai life.
Toward an extraordinary season,
Joseph Mishkin, Campaign Chair
our broad and vital mission to help
our Jewish family locally, in israel and
throughout the world with food and
shelter, dignity and comfort, security,
education and connection to our
heritage means that our Federation has
a very big job: to meet these needs now
and in the future. our annual Campaign
and Foundation are here to cover the gamut.
My husband norman and i know the joy of seeing our gifts
make a difference today. We also have the reassurance and
peace of mind that we’ve invested in the strength and well-
being of our Jewish community and our people tomorrow.
i’m very excited that our new Federation-wide endowment
Campaign will help more donors share this wonderful
experience. look for more information very soon!

A retirement community can boost health and well-being.
*Source: Aramark, What Seniors Think About CCRCs **Source: AARP, Beyond Happiness: Thriving
As you age, the awareness of the mind-body connection plays a crucial role in your future. The Mayo Clinic de nes mind-body medicine as “positively in uencing the mind to improve the health of the individual.” In short, our minds can a ect how healthy our bodies are. Thoughts, feelings, beliefs and attitudes can positively or negatively a ect physical well-being.
Approximately 300 years ago, every system of medicine throughout the world treated the mind and body as a whole. It was during the 17th century, with the development of Western medicine, that the mind and body began to be viewed as two distinct entities. That approach started to change in the 20th century when researchers began to scienti cally demonstrate complex links between the mind-body connection.
Research indicates the supportive environments o ered by retirement communities can actually increase one’s health and well-being rather than slowing you down. Communities o er a consistent social life and engagement with others, which can positively a ect the mind-body. Social connectivity contributes to a healthier, more satis ed life during your later years. Pursuing new activities, meeting people and stimulating your brain are just as important as staying physically t.
The important connection between the mind and the body is recognized by Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, the area’s newest, not-for-pro t planned Life Care Retirement Community. Sinai Residences is taking an innovative approach to senior living that incorporates contemporary thinking into its design, programming and services. It is integrating physical, mental, social and spiritual opportunities together to provide a vibrant lifestyle for on-the-go, active adults. Residents will enjoy unique socializing opportunities, cultural venues, guest lectures, arts and tness programs.
Located on the campus of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, Sinai Residences is already experiencing high demand. Blending physical activities with social connectivity for the ideal mind-body connection is one of many bene ts that are attracting people to learn more about the lifestyle that will be o ered.

Margie Baer will be honored at this year’s annual lion of Judah
luncheon for her passionate and longstanding dedication to
Women’s Philanthropy and to the Jewish Federation of south Palm
Beach County.
Part of a dynamic couple that helped lay a solid foundation upon which
the success of our Federation has been built, Margie is a trailblazer who
galvanized the women in our community and helped them realize their
potential. she came to south Florida with her husband Jimmy in 1976.
“We wanted to become active in our local Federation,” Margie recalls.
“But we found out we didn’t have a Federation.”
That soon changed. Jimmy Baer became our Founding President;
Margie served as the first Chair of the Women’s Division. among
her many accomplishments, there is one that holds a special place in
Margie’s heart.
in the late 1970s, while on a mission trip to israel, she noticed a
number of women wearing a striking gold pin in the shape of a lion.
Today, the lion of Judah is hailed as perhaps the most successful
development vehicle of all time, but in those days only women from
Miami, where the program originated, had the right to wear the
distinctive pins.
“When i became Chair of the Women’s Division, you can guess what
my first priority was,” Margie says. “We had to have that lion!”
Margie was among the eight members of the first pride of lions
outside of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. she blushes at
the idea of taking credit for giving the program wings, always
emphasizing the efforts of the women who worked alongside her.
nevertheless, it was her vision, perseverance and sincere desire to
help the community that ensured success. Today, thanks to Margie
and amazing women like her, more than 17,500 women worldwide
are members of an organization that symbolizes the strength and
compassion of Jewish women.
“i used to cry at the annual lunches because i was so happy to see
how the numbers grew,” Margie says. When told recently that the
Jewish Federation of south Palm Beach County was home to nearly
800 lions last year, making it the second largest pride in the nation,
she cried yet again.

Young adult division
Bryan Drowos, YAD ChairI’m currently Chair of the young adult Division and a
Board Member of the JFSPBC, as well as a proud member of JFNa’s National young Leadership Cabinet. a Certified Financial Planner, I live in Boca raton with my wife, a physician, and our two young children. Someone recently asked me, with all of my work and family commitments, where I find time for Jewish Federation. The thing is, you can’t wait until you find time. It will never come. you must make time for the important things in life. I can’t think of much else more important than ensuring that no fellow Jew in need ever stands alone. That is both an example I am proud to set for my children and a lesson I feel obligated to teach them.
Shayna Goldberg Martinoff, YAD Campaign ChairBefore moving to Boca raton three years ago with
my husband, a physician, I worked at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation for several years as Missions Coordinator and then in Campaign with young adults. Currently, I work from home and have one young daughter who attends Zale preschool. In my mid 20s, I went on a JFNa young Leadership Mission and I was hooked. Since starting a family, I’ve realized the importance of having a strong local Jewish community for my children and the future.
Emily Einhorn, YAD Hands-on ChairI’m a 7th grade science teacher at Donna Klein Jewish academy. I’ve just
moved with my husband to Florida from Boston, where I completed an MST with a concentration in Jewish Day Schools. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy cooking, reading good books and trashy magazines, and exploring South Florida. I am excited to be part of the yaD as an active contributor to my new community.
Brett J. Schneider, YAD Engagement Chaira partner in a law firm and Chair of the firm’s labor
and employment group, when not repre-senting employers in legal disputes, I enjoy spending time with my wife, a publicist, and two young daughters. We currently reside in West Boca raton and have lived in South Palm Beach County for 7 years. Despite my various family and work commitments, I am delighted to serve on the yaD Board so I can give back to the wonderful community within which I live and provide assistance to those less fortunate in South Palm Beach County and beyond.
Lauren Friedman, YAD Social Co-chaira Florida resident for the past 10 years, I work at the adolph & rose Levis
Jewish JCC on the Federation campus in Boca raton. In my free time, I run half marathons, enjoy the beach and pursue my passion of engaging young Jewish adults to identify with the greater Jewish community. The power of the Jewish faith has brought me to where I am today. as a yaD leader, I encourage my generation to commit to Jewish values and create a base of strong young adult leaders to help ensure a Jewish future.
Lawrence Melcer, YAD Social Co-chairraised in Boca raton, I spent my first year of college studying in Israel and went on to yeshiva
university. I am firmly committed to our Jewish community and our Jewish people. each of us can make a unique contribution. In addition to helping to build our new young adult Division, I am ready to use my professional knowledge and skills as a financial advisor to help strengthen local organizations within Jewish and overall communities.
have you heard the
one about the older
Jewish couple in Boca
raton? Probably not
this one, and it’s no
joke. This older couple
has spent decades in our community
putting down roots, having children and
grandchildren, making lifelong friends,
laying the figurative (and sometimes
literal) cornerstones at their synagogue,
supporting institutions of Jewish life and
learning, and making sure no Jew in Boca,
in israel or around the world stands alone
in their time of need. great, right?
There is but one problem with this story.
our generation has a big job ahead to fill
their shoes, and every day brings us closer
to being called upon to do just that.
That is precisely where you and i come
in. our re-formulated and re-invigorated
young adult Division (yaD) is here
for those of us ages 20-45 looking to
connect, looking for good times, looking
to be part of something larger than
ourselves and to make a difference in
the Jewish world locally and abroad.
yaD is here to ensure that our area’s
vibrant, young Jewish people are part
of a vibrant, young Jewish community.
With social, family, hands-on helping and
philanthropic opportunities, yaD is here
for all of us.
The older generation may be a tough act
to follow, but “if not us, who?” and “if not
now, when?” it’s our time to step up and
say to others: “Follow me.”

I am a CPa and Director with the national accounting firm, CBIZ Goldstein Lewin. In our free time, our family loves hiking, skiing and simply being together. yaD provides me with
the perfect vehicle to give back to my community, help people in need in Israel, and teach my children the importance of mitzvot and charity. It doesn’t hurt that we have a great time at all the events too!
Jeffrey weinstein, LEADS Alumni Chaira practicing attorney focused on tax controversy and litigation, I enjoy sports, politics, travel and being involved in our Jewish community. Having grown up in the large, proud Detroit Jewish community, I know how much an active connection to Judaism can mean for our young adults personally and professionally, as well as
how important our work is to help those who need us.
Jeremy Cohen, Member at Large Born and raised in Palm Beach County, and living in South Florida for over 20+ years, I’ve developed a unique understanding and strong commitment to this community. a financial advisor and sports enthusiast, I’m very involved in the Levis JCC as a volunteer

The most important inheritance that I can leave to my children is a value system. Creating a LOJe helps to ensure the continuity of the Jewish people and the meaningful work that our Federation does for our community. By utilizing an annuity to establish my LOJe, I am enjoying its benefits while still being able to fulfill my philanthropic goal. -Margaret Kottler
as a longtime supporter of the South Palm Beach and the International Jewish community, I established my LOJe to express my commitment to the welfare of the Jewish World. I am fortunate that, in my lifetime, I can fully fund my gift forever at the ruby Lion level. -Myrna Skurnick
My lifetime involvement, passion and commitment to both my homes, Greater MetroWest and South Palm Beach County Federations, will endure through the LOJe endowments I have created in both communities. This is my insurance policy that all the important work done in each community continues for my children and grandchildren in both places. -Adele Lebersfeld
I endowed my Lion gift because I believe so strongly in the work we do in this Jewish community. Having devoted many years and resources to this work, it is a great comfort to know I’ve taken steps to ensure it continues. using life insurance as the vehicle was simple to arrange and relatively affordable while I am still young enough and in good health. -Stephanie Owitz
My long term dedication to both my New york and South Palm Beach County Jewish communities was instilled at a young age, as my paternal grandfather was an original supporter of the New york Federation. Now, my commitment to our people will continue forever through the lasting legacy I’ve created by endowing my Lion gifts in both my beloved communities. -Barbara Yaspan
after many years as a Lion of Judah, I chose to endow my annual Lion gift because I deeply believe in the work of Federation. I am ensuring the continuity of my donation to support Israel and my community after I pass on. at this point in my life I was evaluating my estate plan and it was convenient to simply add the bequest. -Lynn Joy Sapoff

a Jewish saying states “Derech eretz Kadmah L’Torah,” proper conduct precedes the Torah. This teaches us that if we hope to appreciate the rest of our tradition’s most noble values, we must begin with Derech eretz – good and proper conduct. respectful speaking and listening – an integral part of good conduct – is essential, even in the midst of a heated argument.
We maintain that diversity of opinion is and has been a feature of Jewish tradition as well as american democracy; that a robust and vigorous debate about political and social issues has always been a hallmark of american society; and that respectful listening and speaking is essential to a discussion of ideas and opinions, even when the subject under discussion provokes strong feelings on the part of those engaged in the conversation.
Jewish law and ethics have deep-rooted concerns about the power of words to harm. The Talmud contains countless examples of how to conduct vigorous debate without abusive language, exemplifying the principles of “kavod habriyot” (honoring every human being).
Civility is the guarding of tongue and the rejection of false witness – two commandments that our tradition holds dear.
we call upon our community to always engage in mutual respect, even though we may have widely differing opinions. we also call upon all persons who purport to be acting on behalf of the Jewish people to exercise civility in their behavior, whether by words or by deeds.
We believe that it is unacceptable to engage in vitriol against people with whom one does not agree. We profess our concern
for the welfare of our community and its people given a notable change in the nature of public expression. We disapprove of those who engage in unscrupulous behavior for selfish reasons in violation of Jewish law, Jewish ethics and Jewish traditions.
Therefore, we specifically endorse the following principles and practices, and call upon our Jewish community to adhere to them:
• We commit ourselves, and ask others in our community to commit themselves, to engage in advocacy that is vigorous, but neither personal nor hostile. We shall treat others with decency, honor and respect in our civil discourse, even when we disagree with each other.
• We reject appeals to bigotry, racism and prejudice as well as calls for violence, in public discourse.
• We abhor the (mis)use of Nazi references and symbols as a means of advocacy, for such use is a desecration of the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.
• We call upon all Jews to adhere to these principles and practices when communicating their views. We deem conduct contrary to these principles as unacceptable and intolerable.
In the year ahead, let us resolve to strengthen our commitment to speak of all matters and to one another with kindness, compassion, fairness and respect. It is only by respecting differences that we can hope to build a working consensus on our shared future.

we are proud to present this important statement that is already increasing civility within our Jewish community. Prepared and signed by a group of committed local rabbis and other key Jewish community leaders, it calls us to strengthen the respectful discourse
so vital to our strength and well-being as a community and as a people. To fulfill our essential communal responsibility to take care of each other, it is incumbent upon each of us – as institutions and as individuals - to learn to live together in a more genteel manner.
