Japan united under shogun -Prior to emerging of shoguns, emperor’s power pooped out [declined] see p. 304though still “figurehead” of country-The top ranking Japanese families warred w/each other using samurai to gain control over emperor/government-Saw creation of “ shogunate”—military government •Next u00 years, Japan saw gov’t ruled by a line of shoguns
Japan split apart under daimyo -lived independently -local armies ruled by samurai warriors who eventually gave loyalty [vassals, oath of loyalty] over to his daimyo—in return, given more land -weakened central gov’t saw outbreaks of fighting among Japan’s warriors -shoguns couldn’t regain control because powerful daimyo fought against this control for they wanted to rule Japan
