At Central the emphasis is on bringing together a
faculty with enormous experience in the film and
television industries, combined with the ability to
deliver totally engaging, relevant practical training in
the art and craft of filmmaking.
Across the page you will see a small selection of
the films our tutors have worked on. These films
range from major feature films directed by the likes
of Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and
Tim Burton, to movies by the most cutting edge,
multi-award winning filmmakers. Such filmmakers
include Paul Andrew Williams (‘London to Brighton’),
Jake West (‘Doghouse’) and the writer-director
of groundbreaking science fiction film ‘Monsters’,
Gareth Edwards, who gave a pre-release private
screening of the film to Central students, followed by
a masterclass in independent filmmaking.
our outstanding faculty includes legendary directing
tutor, Patrick Tucker; senior screenwriting tutor,
Rob Ritchie; Script Supervising tutor Angela Allen,
whose credits include fourteen John Houston films
including ‘The African Queen’ and ‘The Misfits’ with
Marilyn Monroe, as well as London’s most produced
screenwriting tutor, Dave Mitchell. Core tutors

Central Film School London is centrally located in Zone 1
in the heart of Shoreditch, London’s most vibrant cultural
quarter. Universal House is an iconic building that formerly
housed many of Britain’s contemporary artists, including
Tracey Emin, before being recently fully refurbished to
house the school’s air-conditioned studio, production
offices, classrooms, edit suites and 5.1. Surround Sound
cinema. The school looks out on London’s famous Brick
Lane, which has over a hundred bars, clubs, restaurants,
galleries and arts venues plus three world famous weekly
fashion markets. our location reflects our core belief that
filmmakers need to be at the centre of our culture.
The school is known for being a friendly, nurturing
environment with plenty of social activities, because we
recognize that many of our students are new to life in
London, and indeed new to life in the UK.
Universal House is very easy to access by train, tube and
bus. The school is just minutes away from 4 underground
stations and Liverpool Street mainline train station.
The closest tube station is Aldgate East, from which you
are advised to take the Whitchapel Gallery Exit turning
left, then immediately left again onto osborne Street.
After walking approximately 100 metres you will arrive at
a crossroads with Brick Lane in front of you and Universal
House on your left at the beginning of Wentworth Street.

Central leads the way in training its students on
established and emerging professional formats.
Whilst we are the only film school in the world in which
students get to shoot on 35mm film on a one Year
course, we are also at the forefront of experimenting
with new and emerging formats.
In addition to shooting on 35mm film and Super
16mm film, students also shoot on PRo HD solid
state cameras. our HD training includes the industry
standard Sony EX-3 with Pro 35 adapter and 35mm
prime lenses, the groundbreaking Canon 5D MkII with
full Moviecam rig and full 35mm lens and the latest
offering from RED. Whatever the format, students
are trained on the same level of equipment as that
used by professional film crews.
The same principle applies to all the other equipment
at the school, where students train on the same kit
as they will use when they move on to work in the
industry.
Where the industry is fully digital, such as in all
aspects of post-production, so are we, training our
filmmakers to cut on the industry standard FINAL
CUT STUDIo and PRoTooLS.
Training in film producing is delivered in a specialist
production suite at the school where students
are provided with independent office facilities
and telephone lines as well as the support of a
dedicated Production Manager. Students train on
industry standard software including MoVIE MAGIC
BUDGETING and MoVIE MAGIC SCHEDULING.

at BAFTA.
Central Film School students are given an amazing opportunity to screen their work to industry talent agents and producers,
followed by being invited up to the main stage to receive their diplomas.

Formal social events are scheduled each month, but
often it is the informal, impromptu nights out or trips
away that will lead to our students making creative
and social bonds with each other that will last well
into their professional careers.

Thanks to Cineworld, every full-time student at
Central Film School London receives a FREE one
Year Unlimited Access Movie Pass to any Cineworld
cinema in London and the rest of the UK. This means
that you can spend as much of your free time as you
wish watching movies and probably seeing them with
new eyes as you learn more and more of the secrets
of professional filmmaking.
The school also has an extensive DVD library and
provides students with the opportunity to view any of
these films in our state of the art screening theatre.
Student-Tutor Business Meeting at BAFTA
Every full-time student is also invited to the private
members’ lounge at BAFTA to review their progress
and to discuss their career path after film school.
These meetings give students access to the type of
environments in which many film deals are discussed
and where decisions are made.
The Location Shoot Residential
All full-time courses include residential visits, which
are not only great for teambuilding, but reproduce
the experience of going away on a location shoot. In
the past students have shot on location on the South
Coast of England and have been flown out to the
Republic of Ireland to shoot at Hilton Park country
mansion.
New York City
Directing Students are flown to New York City for
their residential visit to complete one module of their
course. on previous visits students have received
training in contemporary acting and directing
techniques from some of the most famous acting
schools in the world, including a masterclass in
Strasberg Technique from Mrs. Anna Strasberg and
classes in Practical Aesthetics Technique at William
H. Macy and David Mamet’s Atlantic Theatre School.

Patrick Tucker, Internationally acclaimed Directing Tutor at Central Film School LondonThe one-Year ‘Industry Filmmaking Diploma’ is an intensive programme that covers all the major areas of professional filmmaking through a hands-on, practical approach, structured around you making your own films to professional standards. Training is delivered by working industry professionals through a combination of dynamic practical workshops, masterclasses and on-set support
as you shoot in the school’s fully equipped film studio or on location across London and beyond. The course provides training for major motion picture production all the way from writing and breaking down scripts for production right through to shooting your films and working with composers and sound designers in the edit suite.
All learning is focused on you directing and crewing a high number of films with experienced actors – you will spend your time shooting on film and Professional High Definition digital formats, learning the highest professional studio standards used in major motion picture production. Early on in the course students go on a residential location shoot outside of London. This is not only great for team building, but broadens the scope of the training received on the course by
reproducing the experience of being a crew member on a location shoot. one of the keys to success on this course is that group sizes are strictly limited, meaning that there are no more than 9 students in practical workshop sessions, ensuring a very high level of hands-on training.
• All students will have the opportunity to produce a showreel of short films that showcase their talents in a number of areas. Please note that students also have the opportunity to specialize in areas of their choice in the latter stages of the course
• All students who complete the course successfully gain Central Film School London’s Industry Diploma in Filmmaking, presented at the Graduation Screening and Awards Ceremony held annually at BAFTA

Professional Screen Directing Diploma
This one Year intensive training programme is the ultimate course to prepare aspiring directors to work successfully in the screen industries. The programme responds to the realities of starting a career as a screen director and provides the very best opportunity to develop the skills you need to establish yourself in the industry.
In addition to the modules outlined above, the programme teaches directors how to work confidently with actors from a wide range of acting backgrounds and how to get the very best out of them in rehearsals and on-set, which is the skill many producers look for in upcoming directors.
Many successful film directors, including oscar Winning Best Director of The King’s Speech, Tom Hooper, began their careers in television, which provided the platform to progress through the industry. To this end, students on the directing programme receive specialist tuition in the following areas:

on the course students primarily learn through doing: through staging scenes, through casting, through structuring and directing rehearsals, through blocking for camera, through working under time pressure and through dealing with a wide range of the problems commonly encountered by professional directors on set. The Applied Screenwriting Diploma is a unique writing programme that provides the opportunity to learn the art and craft of screenwriting at an accelerated pace. During this one Year programme students receive expert teaching from working industry screenwriters and also see work they have written being rehearsed and going into production. After developing their screenwriting skills by working on exercises, scenes and short films, students then go on to focus on writing feature films, for which they receive professional script development support before pitching at exclusive meetings with UK literary agents.

The course is delivered over three terms. In the first term students gain a solid foundation in the key disciplines of screenwriting by studying under professional screenwriters. These classes are supplemented by workshops with film directors and professional actors in which students have scenes they have written dramatized. The first term begins with a focus on writing short films, which students then pitch to go into production.
During the second part of this term students focus more on the craft of writing feature films, which is continued in the second term until students are ready to begin writing their original feature films.
In the final term of the course students develop their skills as Script Readers, writing coverage on feature films, under the guidance of one of London’s highly respected development consultants.
Students will be given an exclusive opportunity to pitch their best ideas to major literary agents at a specially arranged pitching panel. This is another way in which Central Film School London provides its students with the very
best opportunity to kick-start their careers and get ahead of the competition.All students successfully completing the course will receive the Applied Screenwriting Award at the annual Graduation Screening
and Awards Ceremony at BAFTA.Also at the ceremony one graduating student per class will be presented with the “Screenwriter of the Year” Award.

• Unlike some other short courses, the Certificate course at Central introduces students to ALL of the main aspects of contemporary filmmaking, including professional sound recording, casting and producing.

As with all courses at Central, the emphasis is on clear, straight-talking tuition, working with industry standard equipment and professional post-production facilities. All tuition leads towards the production of quality short films made in small production teams, which are premiered at the end of the course Champagne Screening. • This course is designed for those with little or no experience of professional filmmaking. The course is designed to provide training in professional practice at a professional foundation level.
• To apply either call the school directly or email via the online Course Booking Form on the website.
• Students who have completed this course have gone on to make their own independent short films using the training and guidance they have received or gone on to apply for one of our full-time one Year training programmes.
• The age of students who have taken
the course ranges from 18-55, with students travelling from all over the world.
• Students on the one Month course are actively invited to attend social networking events during their time on the course to help build up a list of contacts for future projects.

We are able to offer financial support to a limited
number of students each year in the form of bursaries
ranging from £1,500 up to 50% of course fees.
Bursary students are required to make a positive
contribution to the life of the film school in a variety
of suitable roles.
If you wish to apply for a financially assisted bursary
place on one of our full-time courses please submit
an additional letter with your application materials
detailing your grounds for applying and any previous
work experience that you think may be relevant to a
bursary role.
