REJOICE Isaiah proclaims truly good news to us! God's coming brings not sadness, guilt, fear, wrath, or condemnation. No, God's coming is a source of comfort and joy. Saying it once is not enough, for today's readings are full of joy. Mary's Magnificat substitutes for our psalm today, and our second reading encour-ages us to rejoice, to give thanks and praise. This is the root meaning of the Greek word for eucharist. We are urged to rejoice and give thanks, because the com-ing of the Lord brings joy, heal-ing, liberty, release, vindication. It makes the very earth spring up with new life! Good tidings!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
Last week, we looked at a form of nativity scene called a presipio, charac-terized by framing the crèche of Jesus with a vast array of personalities and a rich geographical context. The tradition was carried to the New World, and finds very rich expression in Latin America today. While in Europe the presepio was reserved mostly to the homes of wealthy nobles and great churches, in Lat-in America it was claimed by the poor and expressed the skills of native arti-sans. In Mexico, you can still find clay figures in every village market. In a way, the native people took the religion of Spanish rule and baptized it with their Indian culture by surrounding the crib of Jesus with local geography and peo-ple. In Brazil, where Christmas falls in summer, the figure of the baby Jesus is wrapped in gold and gems, and set on a hillside surrounded by flowers and animals of all kinds. Sometimes there is a double presepio, presenting both Nativity and Crucifixion. In some places in Latin America, even non-religious people take care to have a presepio in the home, sometimes dedicating one whole room in the house or apartment to the scene. Some cities have markets where people from the countryside sell plants and figurines. In Cuzco, churches and families pro-vide hot chocolate for the children of the poor who come down to help create the nativity scenes. In Paraguay, the baby Jesus grows—the small infant who arrives on Christmas Eve is replaced at New Year with a toddler Jesus who holds in one hand the globe and in the other a cross. Few Christmas traditions have the vitality and variety of presepios and crèches honoring the Nativity.

O GOD, who sees how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS; AGAIN I SAY, REJOICE. INDEED, THE LORD IS NEAR. cf. PHILIPPIANS 4:4-5
John witnesses to one who is to come, one far mightier than he (3), one who will proclaim freedom and deliverance (1) from sin and death. As we await his coming again in glory (2), let us join with Mary in singing the praises of God (Ps).
FIRST READING — ISAIAH 61:1-2a As a garden makes its growth spring up,
so will God make justice spring up before all the nations.
RESPONSORIAL — LUKE 1:46-50 My soul rejoices in my God.
SECOND READING — 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-24 Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances.
Test everything; retain what is good.
GOSPEL — JOHN 1:6-8, 19-28 I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
make straight the way of the Lord.

NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL:
2017-2018 St. Joseph Catholic School
Gap Campaign
We have seen many great successes at our school over the past year including standardized test scores that ranked in the top 10% nationally and multiple sports championships. We accomplish our successes on a very modest budget. Local public schools spend $10,000+ per student. St. Joseph thrives while spending around $6,000 per student with an average tuition income of around $4,000 per student. This leaves a $2,000 per student gap that we must overcome. While we are proud of the successes we achieve on a limited budget, each year it is a challenge that we need your help to meet. Today we ask,
Will you help us conquer this challenge by covering some or all of this $2,000 gap
for a child in our school?
We believe that every member of the St. Joseph community can make a meaningful contribution to this gap campaign. Please prayerfully consider if a gift will be possible for your family. Learn more at

ADVENT SUNDAY AND CHRISTMAS MASS
OBLIGATIONS As Catholics, we honor Sunday every week of the year as the day of Our Lord's Resurrection. For this reason, we are obli-gated to attend Mass on Sunday (which starts on Saturday evening), even when that Sunday is the day before Christmas. We are also obligated to attend Mass on Christmas, celebrat-ing Our Lord's birth.
Thus, we have a great privilege this year of being able to at-tend (and needing to attend) wonderful Masses on two con-secutive days: the Fourth Sunday of Advent on December 23-24 AND Christmas on December 24-25.

DURING MASS Why are we no longer "enthroning" the Book of the Gospels after the Gospel is proclaimed? The respect given to the Book of the Gospels is meant to highlight the special nature of the Gospel's proclamation at Mass. The Book of the Gos-pels can be carried in procession at the beginning of Mass, it is placed on the altar before the Gospel reading, and it is incensed when incense is used. All of those actions happen before the Gospel is proclaimed at Mass and in some way prepare us for that proclamation. After the Gospel reading is finished, the situation changes. There is no incense used for the book after the Gospel reading. Also, at the end of Mass, the book is not carried in procession. Given those differ-ences, it seems appropriate to simply place the Book of the Gospels in the ambo after the Gospel has been proclaimed. Thus, when we respond "Glory to you, O Lord," we should simply sit down without waiting for anything to be done with the Book of the Gospels.
CLERGY WELFARE FUND The collection at all Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be for the Clergy Welfare Fund. This fund provides retirement and health care benefits to retired and infirm priests around our diocese. Our priests spend every day of their adult lives as humble and devoted servants, doing God’s work and serving us until age or infirmity calls them to retirement. Your contributions to the Clergy Welfare Fund make our priests’ retirement possible. Please share with them the generosity that they continue to share with us.
ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
The Twelfth Promise of the Sacred Heart as made to St. Mar-garet Mary:
St. Margaret Mary, speaking of a grace which our Lord ac-corded her on all First Fridays of the month, expressed herself thus: “This Divine Heart appeared to me as a resplendent Sun, whose fiery rays fell directly on my heart, which felt as if it were reduced to ashes by so fierce a fire.”
If you are interested in enthroning your home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus or would like more information, contact Kath-leen Blessing, 236-0826 or [email protected].
NATIONAL RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS
Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, broth-ers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in ser-vice to others—educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, el-derly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously to today’s sec-ond collection.

EVANGELIO DE HOY Jn 1, 6-8. 19-28
Respondió: "No".
