INTRODUCTION
In all the areas of the industry, especially in me-chanical technology, the project and assemblyengineers are faced to a common problem: theexpansion.
This phenomenon, specially appreciable in thepipes and subjected conduits to important tem-perature changes, it has caused and it not caus-es few problems mainly to the serious alterationsthat it causes in the good operation of the instal-lation.
The fact that the pipes accuse this phenomenonparticularly it is due to their facility to changetheir longitude in presence of the thermal jumpsand to their, generally, long layouts.
On the other hand, the conditions of exploitationof the facilities of pipes and conduits have expe-rienced a growing increment of according tem-perature the yield of the plants it has demandedit, and the best technology in the materials hasallowed it.
Everything, together with the forces caused bythe expansion, the vibrations engendered bycompressors, turbines, engines, pumps and oth-er elements, transform the pipes and conduits in-to elements transmitters and agitators since theirstiffness and structure, generally metallic, bene-fits the quick and sustained propagation of an-noying effects through the facilities.
The adoption of measures with which it is neu-tralize or minimize the diffusion of these effects itis in fact of supreme importance in the field of thedesign of mechanical engineering to be all themharmful and contrary to the designer's will that isthe one to transport all type of fluids with effi-cience, security and without secondary effects.
Our program of metallic expansion joints of in-dustrial application, presented in the followingpages, has for objective to solve any derivated ef-fect of the phenomenon of the expansion and thepressure, compensating the displacements of theinstallation with an effective and durable way.

Installation InstructionsPIPE GUIDING
The pipe must be guided to allow axial movementonly. Spacing of guides according to Figs. 1 and2. Install anchors at changes of direction. Steampipes should be installed so that the condensatecan be drained.
PIPE SUPPORTS
Sliding or roller support should be used to preventthe pipe offsetting or lifting. Do not use swingingsuspensions with axial bellows.
ANCHOR POINTS
All lenghts of pipe where bellows are used to takeup expansion should be fixed at both ends withan anchor. Only one bellows between two an-chors points. The anchor points have to absorb the thrust ofthe expansion joint as well as the frictional forcesfrom the guides. Install anchors at changes of di-rection.
FILLING AND PRESSURISING THE INSTALLATION
Before filling and pressure testing, ensure thatanchors are firm and all guides in position. Do notexceed the permissible test pressure of the Ex-pansion joint.
EXPANSION
The max. permissible expansion is marked on theexpansion joint in ± values. These values, how-ever, should not fully be used in systems withvery frequent temperature charges. For lateralmovement see installation example (fig. 1).
FLOW DIRECTION
In expansion joints with internal sleeve take careto the assembly position in function of the flowdirection and internal sleeve position (fig. 3).
VIBRATION TAKE-UP
The Expansion joint should be installed as closeas possible to the vibrating equipment and an an-chor should be provided as close to the bellowsas possible (fig. 4). The bellows is installed in theneutral position, without cold draw.

Compensadores tipo Kappa-A.
Para cualquier consulta dirigirse a Coraci, s.a. Departamentode Compensadores de Dilatación.
GENERAL RECOMENDATIONS
Axial expansion joint which will not be cold drawnin our works have to be cold drawn in accor-dance the value of extension (extended the ex-pansion joint when works in hot pipes) or com-pression (compresed the expansion joint whenworks in cold pipes) indicated in our catalogues(fig. 5).For exactly calculation of the pre-set values infunction of room temperature, dessing tempera-ture and effetive expansion of the pipe, pleasesee the equation indicated in our in general cat-alogue.
COLD DRAWN COMPENSATORS
Type Kappa-A and assembly unit. These expan-sion joints are already cold drawn in our works by50% of the permissible movement.
Attention: The anchor points of the pipelinehaveto be solidly anchored before the clips are re-moved.
The bellows should not be stessed (torsion) dur-ing installation (fig. 6). This is particularly impor-tant for expansion joint with screwed ends. Thebellows should be protected from damage orblockage, wed splash, plaster or concrete parti-cles.
Please note! Water hammer destroys bellows, therefore pay particular attention to properdrainage of steam pipes.
Care has to be exercised to avoid damage by cor-rosion. (Water treatment, prevention of electrolyteformation in copper lines or galvanized lines,etc.).
OPERATING AND TEST PRESSURE
For the pressure operation see the coefficient ofreduction (Kp) in function of the temperature(general catalogue).
The permissible test pressure as per DIN 2401is indicated in (fig. 7).

Installation InstructionsGUIDED OF THE PIPE FOR AXIAL EXPANSION JOINTSThe pipe must be guided to allow axial movement on-ly. Spacing of guides according to figs.1 and 2. Installanchors at changes of direction.
Sliding or roller supports should be used to preventthe pipe offsetting or lifting.
All lengths of pipe where bellows are used to takeup expansion should be fixed at both ends with an an-chor. Only one bellows between two anchor points.
The anchor points have to absorb the thrust of theexpansion joint as well as the frictional forces from theguides. Install anchors at changes of direction.
EXPANSION
The max. permissible expansion is marked in our cat-alogue in ± values. These values, however, should notfully be used in systems with very frequent tempera-ture changes. For lateral movement see installation ex-ample (fig. 1).
VIBRATION TAKE-UP
The Expansion joint should be installed as close aspossible to the vibrating equipment and an anchorshould be provided as close to the bellows as possi-ble (fig. 3). The bellows is installed in the neutral posi-tion, without cold draw.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE ASSEMBLY
The rubber expansion joints complete their functionwell if the installation and the assembly are carried outcorrectly. Detail of install for threaded expansion jointsee overleaf.
Is necessary to choose well the long of the screw toavoid the possible contact with the rubber (in highpressures the expansion joint experiences a dilation inhis circumference), see fig. 6.
Screw in a diagonal way to get tight. Is recom-mended to examine the presses of the screws at leastone week after their start up and then periodically.
There are not necessary gaskets if the surface ofthe flange of the pipe is totally flat. The existence of acounterflange adapted in the pipe is a decisive factorfor the expansion joint life (see fig. 7).
Axial expansion joints have to be cold drawn in ac-cordance of the value of extension (extended the ex-pansion joint when works in hot pipes) or compressionvalue (compressed the expansion joint when works incold pipes) indicated in our catalogs (fig. 4).

The bellows should not be stressed (torsion) dur-ing installation (fig.5). This is particularly important forexpansion joints with threaded ends.
The bellows should be protected from damage orblockage, weld splash, plaster or concrete particles.
OPERATING AND TEST PRESSUREBefore filling and pressure testing, ensures that an-chors are firm and all guides in position. Do not exceedthe permissible test pressure of the expansion joint in-dicated in catalog.

CUALQUIER OTRO TIPO DE CONEXIÓN BAJO NORMAPUEDE SER SUMINISTRADO: DIN, ASA, FIL, etc.
Standard connectionsSpecially fitting for flexible connections betweenunits; stress elimination; elimination of corro-sion as a result of overstress, vibrations; con-veyance of all sort of fluids at high temperatureand high pressure.
Easy to handle thanks to its lightness, offering ahigh degree of safety against mechanical ag-gression because of its reinforced structure.
RECOMMENDATIONSFlexible metal hoses do not require specialmounting precautions. Following recommenda-tions should be anyway taken into consideration:– Do not twist the hose beyond what the bend
radius allows.– Select the necessary flexible hose length, tak-
ing into account the hose’s useful part.– Avoid bending the hose or to subject it to the
risk of being cut at the connection level.– For shiftings, and in view of the unfeasibility of
describing all possible combinations, pleasefollow the manufacturer’s advise.
– If the hose is subjected to wear and tear con-ditions because of abrasion, an additional out-er protection should be contemplated.
– When the hose is subjected to high tempera-ture and pressure use the values of reductionof the bend radius (Kr) and pressure (Kp) indi-cates in the enclosed chart.

CORACI Loading Arms simultaneously load multi-compartment liquid transport trucks via connec-tions at the base of the trailer tank rather than theconventional way, through the opening at top ofthe trailer. CORACI Bottom Loading Arms are de-signed to meet API envelope dimensions.
This design allows for a safe and unobstructedworking area while loading.
BASIC COMPONENTS:
Swing joint permits rotation of arms.
Counterbalance arrangement above Swing Jointallows arm to be positioned vertically with a min-imum of effort, facilitating easy connections.
Coupling systems. Any coupling accesories ex-ist in the market can be used and adapted to theloading arms (flexible hoses, API coupling, kam-lock…).
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:
1. Bottom loading arms are installed in a pres-sure-tight sealed system. Provisions to relievepressure build up due to thermal expansion ofproduct are necessary.
2. Should it be necessary to store arms backwhen not in use, the method used should notimpose any sharp bends or stresses.
ACCESSORIES:
Stand pipes (below “Swing Joints” in line draw-ing) are usually supplied by customer. Heights de-termined by dimensional considerations of rackpiping system and discharge evelope.
API style coupler, arms are compatible for usewith API style couplers made by coupling manu-facturer of your choice. Always used in conjunc-tion with swivel elbow.
Spacer spool sometimes used between couplerand swivel elbow to give longer extension to cou-pler.
Pillow block supports sometimes used for ad-ditional support when the arms extend extreme-ly high off the ground or when risers needstrengthening.
Scuff guard to protect hose and truck tanks.

BELLOWSCONSTRUCTION, TYPES, TESTING AND INSPECTION
The main component of expansion joints is themetal bellows. The main feature of bellows is their high axial, lateral and angular flexibility.
Often, the use of such a flexible part is in practiceundesirable and the flexibility of the bellows mustbe limited according to the requirements of eachsingle case. This is achieved by means of specialdevices installed on the piping (anchors, guides, etc.) and, in many cases, by devices assembledon the expansion joints (tie-rods, hinges, etc.).Of course these must be designed so as to with-stand the end thrust exerted on the pipe by inter-nal or external pressure.
TYPES OF BELLOWS
Bellows can be classified on the basis of the fol-lowing.• Corrugation shape.• Number of walls.• Presence of external reinforcing rings.• Material.
For a long time, the shape and type of bellowswere dependent upon availabletechnical facili-ties. For example, the lack of special forming ma-chines led many manufacturers to produce bel-lows from annular shaped bulged discs weldedon the outside and inside of the corrugations (fig.1). According to another manufacturing technique

bellows were also produced by welding togetherthin corrugated discs. This technique is still suc-cessfully employed in special applications butgenerally are not used to solve expansion prob-lems on piping (fig. 2).
The same kind of reasons, that is very precisetechnical limitations, is at the origin of a wide usethat was made in the past of certain materialwhich, being as they are, much easier to formby a tool rolling technique than the stainlesssteel, were preferred by manufacturers using thatkind of technique. Before classifying the bellowsmentioned above, it would be advisable to look atthe forming methods used.
In order to form corrugations in a cylinder andkeep the stresses on the materials as low as pos-sible, you need to exert a radial force from the in-side to the outside and, at the same time, an ax-ial compression force.
This can be done mechanically (by means ofrollers) or hidraulically (by means of liquid pres-sure inside the bellows placed into axial movingdies). Rolling can be carried out in hot or coldconditions.
NUMBER OF WALLSAssuming that all the other parameters definingthe shape of a corrugation remain constant, if weconsider the influence of the thickness of a single-ply bellows on the meridional and circum-ferential stresses due to a given pressure andtravel, we shall see how the stress due to thepressure decreases where as that due to the trav-el increases together with the thickness.
To overcome this limitation to the constructionof bellows suitable to meet special pressure andtravel requirements, multilayer bellows are man-ufactured.

Coraci manufactures:• Single-ply bellows: These are available in all
diameter for low pressures and in very largediameters for all cases.
• Multiply bellows: These are made of 1 to 4corrugated concentric cylinders. They areavailable in all diameters for average pressurevalues.
• Multilayer bellows: These are made of a largenumber (from 4 to 20) of thin layers using anexclusive corrugating process. This manufac-turing technique enables the most cryticalpressure and movement problems to be easi-ly solved.
• Reinforced bellows: Another way of reducingthe stresses due to the internal pressure with-out increasing the wall thickness is to use re-inforcing rings.
The reinforced bellows, which in some cases canbe used as well as multiply bellows, find theirmost economical range of application from DN400 to Dn 1800.In exceptional cases the reinforced bellows aremanufactured sometimes on larger and smallerdiameters.A great deal of research has been carried out onthe shape of reinforcing rings that act as a meansof reducing stresses without limiting the travelcapacity of the corrugations.
CORRUGATION SHAPE
This is dependent upon the following parameters:• Inside diameter d• Corrugation height h• Lower corrugation radius ri• Upper corrugation radius ra• Pitch p• Total thickness s• Number of walls n• Unit wall thickness t
On the standard expansion joints, Coraci uses astandard corrugation series. This standardisation(that is the choice of parameters) based on overthirty years experience in designing and manu-facturing expansion joints, is made by continu-ously varying the ratios between each parameterand the diameter.
With the standard bellows it is possible to solvealmost all expansion problems met in practice. Inaddition to standard bellows, however, we designand manufacture new types of bellows for spe-cial applications.
The performance of the bellows, that is its traveland pressure capacity for a given life, is calculat-ed under the designe equations show is theSEVENTH EDITION 1998 & OWN. 2000 of the Stan-dard Expansion Joints Manufactures Association(E.J.M.A.) and om experience.

The hidraulyc forming method has the advantageof avoiding friction between the walls of the cylin-der and the tools during forming operation withthe result that the surface finish of the bellowsis not affected. The thinner the material, the moreimportant this factor becomes.
Special tooling is required for each diameter, thickness and shape of corrugation. Fhurtermore, forming machine dimensions increase by the di-ameter of the bellows, which mans that over acertain diameter it is unpractical to manufacturebellows hidraulically.

Our manufacturing programme is therefore asfollows:• DN12 ÷ DN700: Automatic hydraulic forming
method.• DN700 ÷ 2800: Semiautomatic hydraulic
forming method.• DN > 1000 - 10,000 mm or greater: Mechani-
cal rolling method.
The two hydraulic forming methods differ fromone another with respect to the finished productin that semiautomatic one allows an easier man-ufacture of bellows with reforcing rings.
The reinforcing rings, as we will discuss later on,are necessary for large diameter bellows operat-ing at high pressure.
The most important characteristic step in theworking process is the corrugation forming.
The other steps are equally important and includethe following:• Cutting and measuring metal sheet or strip
from which the corrugations are to be made.• Preparation of the edges for welding.• Butt-welding of the edges to form a cylinder.
This operation is very important, as well as themost difficult, in the case of thin sheets or strips.
Welding is carried out on a fully automatic ma-chine designed and built by us.
Welding qualification and inspection are accord-ing to ASME Boiler Code Section IX.

Pt = PN x Kp Ct = C x Kc
Nominal pressureThe values of pressure and travel given in thiscatalogue refer to room temperature.
To calculate the PN (nominal pressure) for a giv-en working condition, see UNI 1282-84 specifi-cation.
Allowable pressures and travels at various tem-perature conditions must be converted using thefollowing equations:
Pt = Maxim pressure at working temperature
Ct = Maxim travel at working temperature
(Kp y Kc in previus table)
Anchors and guidesFor a correct operation of the expansion jointssuitable means should be provided to limit themovement possibilities allowed by the expansionjoint itself.
Said means should also transmit to the support-ing structures the weight forces of the pipes, ofthe expansion joints and of other components, aswell as to keep the forces and moments to strainthe expansion joint.
The structures used to prevent the pipes frommoving or rotating are called anchors.
The structures allowing movement in one direc-tion only ared called guides.
The type and number of anchors and guides re-quired in each expansion joint installation will bespecified in this catalogue.
In many cases, especially for angular and lateralexpansion joints, special guides are used whichallow movement in more than one direction.

MaterialsIn theory, any material can be used in the manu-facture of bellows provided it can be welded andhas a suitable elongation (higher thau 35%).
In practice, however, the choice of materials isdependent upon the following considerations:• Corrosion resistance to the most commonly
used media, in particular superheated waterand steam both superheated and saturated.
• Fatigue resistance: preference is given to ma-terials with a high bending fatigue limit.
• Possibility of welding to the most commonlyused pipe materials.
Although we make bellows upon request in awide range of materials, we have standardisedthe use of those given in the next page tablehereunder showing the following data at varioustemperature, according to ASME Section VIII andUSAS B. 31. 1. 0: allowable stress σt - moduli ofelasticity E - reduction factors for both pressureand travel Kp, Kc.
The standard material is AISI 321.
The expansion joints of this catalog, when indi-cated with their code identification, are intendedto be made with AISI 321 bellows.
In the following charts the upgrade is facilitatedbetween norms and the equivalences among thediverse countries.
