GRATON,CA,2020-06-16--TheballroomatBavariaDownswasdesignedforweddings,anditsluminousceilingispartofthefestivities.Usingcolor-controlledLEDlightingandtranslucentthermoformedceilingpanelsfromCeilume,thepopularChaska,MNeventandweddingvenuechangesitslooktosuittheoccasion.Thebroad,pitchedceilingcanmimicavastskylightonabeautifulblueafternoonormatchthebridesmaid’sgowns.Itcanevenbesyncedtothesoundsystem.WhenconceivingthenewballroomforBavariaDowns,designerEdHawksfordknewrightfromthebeginningthathewantedtodosomethingspecialwiththeceiling.“IwantedtheimpressionofaLaliqueglassceilingfromthe1920’s,backlitwithcolor-changingLEDs.”Theownerhadbeenthinkingaboutalargefieldofskylights,butevenonenarrowrowofskylightsprovedtobeprohibitivelyexpensive,andwouldnotreallygivethelookandfunctionhewanted.Hawksfordsuggestedaluminousceilingthatwasaningeniousmergingoftraditionalstyleandcontemporarytechnology,savedmoney,andaddedversatility.

Eventhoughtheceilingissloped,itusesaconventional2-footx2-footT-barsuspensiongridseensoofteninflatceilings.ThecentralportionoftheceilingislaidoutinaseriesofluminoussectionsmadeoftranslucentCeilumeDoricstyleacousticpanels,ageometricdesignwithnumerousangled,light-catchingfacets.Thesectionsare14feetwide,meetingatthepeak.Theyareseparatedby2-footwidestripsofopaquewhitepanels.ThelowerpartsofceilingareopaqueSand-coloredCeilumeFlorentinepanels.Anornate,deeply-detailedfloraldesignreminiscentof19thCenturydecorativeplaster,theyaddanoteoftraditionalstyletotheroom.Hawksforddescribestheoverallintentoftheceilingwas“tomakethisbuildingfeelconservatory-like.”Abovetheceiling,color-changingLEDfixturesaremountedabovethetranslucentCeilumepanels,pointingdownwardstowardstheroom.16-footlongLEDstripsrunperpendiculartotheridgelineoftheceiling,6-8stripsperbay.Theyarepositionedjust20inchesabovethetranslucentpanels.Thespacebetweentheceilingandtheinsulatedroofaboveithaslimitedheight.LightingdesignerScottWexler,presidentofWex-Tech,wasconcernedthatLEDlightssoclosetothepanelswouldnotbeevenlydiffused,andcouldcausehotspotsontheluminousceiling.Totestit,Wexlerconstructedasimplelightboxusinga24-inchx24-inchcardboardcarton,andduct-tapedthethermoformedpanelovertheendofit.Hefound,tohissurprise,thathecouldbringthelightsourcetolessthansixinchesawayfromtheCeilumepanelandstillgeteven,diffusedlight.Thebacklittranslucentpanelscreatealushfieldofcolorabovetheroom.Thecolorcanbechangedforarangeofeffects.Itcanmatchtheafternoonbluesky,ortheorange-redsofsunset,dependingonthetimeoftheevent.“Ifthebride’sgotacolorscheme,”Hawksfordpointsout,“wecanthemetheceilingtomatchhercolors.Thelightingsystemcanalsobeintegratedwiththesoundsystem,soitcanworklikeanolddiscoceiling.”HawksfordselectedCeilumepanelsspecificallybecausetheyallowedhimtokeepthefire-suppressionsprinklersabovetheceiling,withouthavingtopenetratetheluminouspanelsandspoilthe‘skylight’effect.Ceilumeceilingsareapprovedforusebeneathsprinklersbecausetheyare‘drop-out’panels.Intheeventoffire,heatsoftensthethermoformedpanelssotheydeformanddropoutoftheceilinggrid,allowingthesprinklerstoactivate.Hawksfordrecallsthatthefiremarshalwhohadtoapprovethedesignwasextremelystrict.“ThiswasthetoughestfiremarshalI’veeverdealtwith.”HawksfordsubmittedCeilume’sfire-testingdocumentationand,hesays,that“provedit.”Thefiremarshalallowedsprinklersabovethethermoformedpanels,whileinsistingonsprinklerspenetratingthroughadjacentmineralfiberpanels.CeilumethermoformedpanelsmeetClassAfiresafetyrequirementsandareGreenguardGoldcertifiedforindoorairquality.
Theceilinghasprovedtobeapopularsuccess,andsomethingofasalestoolinbookingeventsintothevenue.“It’sabonus:look,yougetthisbeautifulupgrade,”explainedformerDirectorofVenueOperations,GeorgiaMeyer.“Clientslookatitasadécortheydon’thavetoinvestin.Itbringsavalueplus.”
