11 About CaribDA
11 Board of Directors
The two year term for the CaribDA Board of
Directors came to an end recently in early June
at the end of the CaribDA biennial conference at
the Trinidad Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain,
Trinidad & Tobago. The board achieved a
well-attended (nearly 200 delegates) and well
supported conference – many thanks to all of
our sponsors and exhibitors – despite the
current recession in Trinidad & Tobago because
of reduced oil and gas prices. CaribDA’s
membership now totals over 200 persons,
creditable progress having been made towards
our current goal of achieving a membership of
250. Notable at the conference was the
commencement of CaribDA’s Young Leader’s
Program under leadership of Monica Boodhan
and Karlene Singh as joint chairpersons. Also
many thanks to Shawn Meyer-Steele for his very
worthy effort in setting up a humanitarian
initiative and committee with the aim of
CaribDA arranging relief efforts throughout the
region in response to members’ concerns.
Very many thanks to departing directors Mario
Trevino, Gerard Pereira and Bill Anderson (who
reluctantly owing to work commitments, had to
withdraw earlier in the term). Also, a warm
welcome to our newly elected directors, Monica
Boodhan and Karlene Singh.
I am honoured to have been elected by the board
as President for the further term of 2016 to
2018.
New chairpersons have volunteered and been
elected to the chair positions for CaribDA’s
various committees. We are setting off on a new
two year term with goals of arranging workshops
and a next Biennial Conference in Curacao in
2018. We look forward to our next event which
will be holding a workshop at the start of the
CWWA Conference at the Trinidad Hyatt
Regency in October 2016.
President's Message By: John D. Thompson, Desalination Company of Trinidad & Tobago Ltd.
Letter from the Editor By: Karlene Singh, Consolidated Water Co. Ltd.
From my first introduction to CaribDA, having to
organize the 2010 Conference and Exhibition
held in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, I’ve felt a
great connection to and affection for the
organization. I am very happy to be more
involved now and look forward to serving
CaribDA and its members. I hope you enjoy the
new look of the newsletter – the complementary
orange was selected as a nod to CaribDA’s
Dutch roots!
The vision and reach of the organization
continues to expand with the development of
our Young Leader’s Program (YLP) and soon to
be established Humanitarian Committee. Our
membership and biennial conference
attendance is steadily growing.
In this issue, we share the highlights of CaribDA’s
2016 Biennial Conference & Exhibition recently
held in Trinidad. We also feature the work of
the conference’s Best Presentation and an
account from Best Student Poster Winner. The
YLP’s events during the week were a success,
with keen participation from new industry and
student members.
CaribDA will continue to look for ways to add
value to its members and sponsors. We invite
you to join with us in making CaribDA’s mission
to develop and promote desalination and water
reuse in the Caribbean a reality. We look
forward to having you join one of our
committees. Please share your ideas to make this
newsletter in particular a leading resource for
information on desalination and water reuse in
the Caribbean.

Eliminating Energy Costs from the Seawater
RO Process Using Wave Energy By: Justin Sonnett, EcoH2O Innovations, LLC
By harnessing hydrokinetic energy found within ocean waves to power
pumps that directly pressurize seawater for reverse osmosis, the
SAROS buoy is able to produce water more cheaply than previous
seawater desalination units. Initial oceanic testing of SAROS proved
that by utilizing the hydrokinetic energy found in ocean waves energy it
is possible to produce desalinated water suitable for human
consumption. (Continued on page 3.)
“Developing and Affording New Water
Sources” was the theme of CaribDA’s 5th
Biennial Conference and Exhibition, held at
the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad, from 31 May – 3 June. The
conference drew two hundred attendees,
twenty-two sponsors and twenty-three
exhibitors, spanning eleven Caribbean Islands,
six countries in the Americas, and as far as
Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel.
The week officially opened with a full line-up
of notable speakers at the opening session,
which included keynote speaker Dr. Denise
Tsoiafatt Angus, Secretary of Community
Development and Culture of the Tobago
House of Assembly; Mr. Alan Poon King,
Acting CEO of WASA; Emilio Gabbrielli, IDA
President; Roopnarine Oumade Singh,
Executive Director of Republic Bank and John
Curtis, Managing Director – Caribbean of
Seven Seas Water Corporation.
This conference saw the successful launch of
the Young Leader’s Program, with new
student and industry members coming on
board. Mentorship and internship connections
have already been made. The Ruby
Sponsored Networking Reception by Seven
Seas Water at Anchorage Beach Club was a
delightful event, showcasing Trinidad’s culture
through popular local dishes and dance.
Technical presentations were informative and
many spurred discussion. The winning
presentation came from the “Desalination
Using Green Technologies” session as it did in
2014, with an application of wave energy to
lower desalination energy costs by Justin
Sonnett of EcoH2O Innovations. All six
student posters were notable, especially for
their methods that utilized local natural and
renewable resources to solve existing
problems. The winning student poster,
presented by Akil De Leon of the University
of Trinidad and Tobago, focused on solving an
industry problem for predicting and
optimizing coagulant dosing using an
artificial neural network bases system.
The closing of the week was marked with
awards presented during the banquet dinner,
notably to Dr. Irving Moch for long service to
the desalination industry, particularly in the
Caribbean, and to the Desalination Company
of Trinidad & Tobago for fourteen years of
successful large scale provision of potable
water in Trinidad through sea water
desalination.
CaribDA is very grateful to each Sponsor and
Exhibitor that participated in the event. The
success of the Conference and Exhibition
greatly relies on your support. We do value
your feedback and will make every effort to
integrate your suggestions and ideas into
making the next event an even greater
success for us all. Join us in Curacao in 2018
to mark our 10th anniversary and the 90th
anniversary of Commercial Desalination on
Curacao!

Further development of a new wave energy converter device was able to extract even more
hydrokinetic energy, increasing the output of drinkable water by the unit. The SAROS buoy
addresses the limitations of the current point absorber wave energy converter and heave
plate designs and can effectively utilize the smallest wave conditions to produce clean,
drinkable water, while accommodating a huge range of tidal and wave conditions. The
effectiveness of this approach and our design became evident in our ocean trial at the UNC
Coastal Studies Institute in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in May, 2016. While
conditions were calm enough that the buoy was easily deployed and retrieved through the
surf, our wireless telemetry system showed that the prototype was able to take advantage of
waves less than 1.5 feet and 10 seconds apart. The amount of water pumped in these calm,
nearly flat conditions greatly exceeded our expectations.
Moving forward we will begin testing and analysis to optimize the loading of the buoy, extracting even
more energy with each passing wave. We are also partnering with two different universities to begin
in-depth research into the environmental effects during long-term testing, and the scalability of the
device beyond our current 3500 GPD goal as well as further buoy optimization.

Outreach Event at the University of Trinidad and Tobago By: Monica Boodhan, The University of Trinidad and Tobago
The Caribbean Desalination Association (Carib-DA) teamed up with its affiliate organization, the
International Desalination Association (IDA) and visited the University of Trinidad and Tobago
(UTT), Point Lisas Campus on 31st May 2016 for its first outreach event in Trinidad. This UTT
campus was specially chosen due to its close proximity to the industrial capital of the twin-island
Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The short seminar targeted students and young professionals from
all disciplines interested in desalination and water reuse. The main objective of the outreach event
was to promote the numerous benefits affiliated with membership in both organizations and to
stimulate interest in the desalination and water reuse world. The joint CaribDA-IDA team was
welcomed warmly by the staff and students at the UTT and the interactive presentations were well
received. Refreshments and a short networking session followed the seminar.

Official launch of the CaribDA Young Leader’s Program
By: Monica Boodhan, The University of Trinidad and Tobago
A very significant milestone was met during
the 2016 Biennial Conference and
Exposition as the CaribDA officially
launched its YLP initiative. The launch took
place on Wednesday 1st June in the main
exhibition hall with approximately 150
guests in attendance. The President of
CaribDA, John Thompson, warmly
welcomed all attendees and proudly
introduced the YLP co-chairs: Monica
Boodhan, Karlene Singh, and committee
member Jason Deal. All three YLP
committee members took to the floor and
gave an overview of the YLP initiative while
extending an invitation for new membership
applications and affiliate companies.

CaribDA Young Leader’s Program Activities
The CaribDA-YLP Kick-Off and Poster
Session was held on Wednesday, 1st June.
There were a total of six poster entries that
qualified to compete for the Best Student
Poster Award. All six entries were received
from students who are currently enrolled at
the University of Trinidad and Tobago, which
is the national university of the twin-island
Republic. The students are all currently
pursuing research at different degree levels in
the water treatment and reuse field.
The award winning presentation entitled “An
Artificial Neural Network Base System for the
Prediction and Optimization of Coagulant
Dosing in Water Treatment Plants” was
presented by Mr. Akil De Leon. In his
research, Akil developed an Artificial Neural
Network (ANN) to give a prediction of the
optimum coagulant dosage. This was one
using the initial values of turbidity and pH, the
polymer dose and desired settling turbidity as
the inputs.
Due to the outstanding quality of the work
presented by all the students, several
members of the outgoing and incoming
CaribDA Board of Directors and the
CaribDA-YLP committee members, pooled
together resources and presented monetary
consolation prizes to all six student poster
presenters!
The CaribDA Board of Directors and the
CaribDA-YLP committee members
extended congratulatory remarks praising the
high quality of work and encouraged the
continuation of such.

About the CaribDA YLP
An Account from the First
Ever Poster Winner, Akil
De Leon “The outreach event at the University of
Trinidad and Tobago, Point Lisas campus on
31st May 2016 served as my first introduction
to desalination outside of the classroom. The
seminar showed me the importance of
desalination and its growth and highlighted
the vital role it plays currently and in the
future development of the Caribbean. The
event inspired me to become part of the
CaribDA-YLP and stimulated my interest to
pursue a career in the field of desalination.
Additionally, I was given the opportunity to
attend and participate at the CaribDA 2016
