Statoil in Canada
The company owns over 1,100 square kilometers of oil sand leases in Northern Alberta and we are currently managing a suite of Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) projects at different development stages, ranging from feasibility studies to full oil sands production. We also own interests in several exploration, development and production licenses offshore Newfoundland, Canada.
Our Leismer oil sands facility in northern Alberta is a demonstration project, or a learning platform, where we experiment to find the most effective production methods and successful ways to reduce our environmental footprint. The facility began producing in early January 2011, under-budget and one month ahead of schedule.
Learning
It takes time to develop technology and we acknowledge that we are very new in the oil sands industry. But we endeavour to take the learning we’ve acquired from being an offshore operator and put that into other parts of our business. It is because of this that we have established a Heavy Oil Technology Centre (HOTC) in Calgary, and the research

conducted there has provided us great advantages in learning and collaborating in the oil sands. Our technology pilot projects are associated with improved oil recovery from the deposits and more effective steam production. This could entail substantial reductions in carbon emissions.
Our goal is to make our next SAGD project even more energy efficient, and that includes reducing steam-to-oil ratio and reducing CO2 emissions. Our technology plan will enable us to reach these targets.
Sharing
Our involvement in the oil sands and diversifying our portfolio is essentially inspired by the world’s energy realities. The task of supplying the world with enough energy for coming decades is a tough one. Offshore resources are limited, so we need to seek new unconventional production methods. We know that as the global population grows and the standard of living is increased throughout the industrial world, the demand curve for energy continues to go up. We are committed to accommodating these energy needs in a responsible manner, applying technology and creating innovative business solutions.
Contributing
It takes great collaboration and innovation to capitalize on new resources while balancing the need to minimize impacts on our land, water and air. Statoil gladly collaborates with local industry peers on a number of technology, environment, and community initiatives. We have recently welcomed Thai company PTTEP as one of our partners in our oil sands operations and are collaborating with them because we believe we can always improve by working together and incorporating the expertise of others into our activities.
