CXS Surround System
The CXS option brings true multi-formatflexibility to the Capricorn, providingcomprehensive monitoring features for allsurround mixing applications includingmusic scoring, DVD and film. In creatingthe CXS, AMS Neve engineers drew onyears of expertise gained through designingthe VSP scoring panel for the V Seriesanalogue console, now considered standardequipment by leading film scoring mixers.
The new digital CXS design enables theuser to rapidly create and compare mixes inany surround format, including LCRS, 5.1,6.1 and 7.1, and to simultaneously form a 2track stereo version of the mix. The optionalso includes dual automated surroundjoysticks for easy creation and visualisationof complex surround pans.
CXS Features
Monitor PathsThere are Mute, Solo and Trim controls foreach of the 8 Film Monitor paths.
This allows control of the Film Monitorpath prior to the Assignable Inserts and Eqsbefore the speakers, without affecting theStems (busses).
Miscellaneous ProcessingProvides local control ofexternal surround processors -for example, DS4/424s. The"Acad" button switches in aninternal dual curve AcademyFilter when monitoring inmono. "Insert" enables any aDigital or analogue insert tobe controlled in the FilmMonitor path.
Alternate monitor selectAllows monitoring of a2-track mix created from thesurround mix, an 8-wayexternal patch, LT-RT matrixor 2 normal stereo inputs.

2 Track reductionA surround mix may be reduced in thedigital domain to form a stereo mix. Thereis individual level for the amount of thecontribution of the centre channel andsurround channels, and an overall level andmute.
Dialogue InputFor Scoring, there is a stereo DialogueGuide Track input. A director can try outfades of Music against Dialogue to ensure aCue's timing. These are done by the Musicand Dialogue faders provided.
PlaybacksIn addition to the usual 8-Track playbacksfrom the Record tracks, there are 3additional 8-wide playbacks feeding into the8 monitor paths, giving you an "in-context"input to the monitor paths. These playbackshave individual cut and level controls.
Stem/Monitor sectionIn Monitor mode, the stem select, cut andsolo buttons determine what will bemonitored on the speakers.
In Stem mode, these buttons, and also thepaddle switches determine the activity ofthe stems going to the tape machines.
The Stem select button(s) of the Stem(s)may be selected, and then the individualtracks may be cut/soloed or dropped intorecord by use of the paddles.
There are also link buttons to linknumerous buttons together, a master soloclear button and individual safe buttons forthe stems. There is also LED indication ofwhich Stem is active on the controls.

Additional Channels andProcessing
Capricorn's processing system can beexpanded to meet the requirements of thebiggest, most demanding sessions. Optionsinclude adding channel or monitor inputsfor handling bigger projects such assurround mixes, and adding EQ ordynamics cards for greater creativeflexibility.
Contribution Card
The Con card gives additional audio pathssuch as inputs, monitors, aux's, outputs, subgroups and cues). Each card provides 16paths in any combination.
Filter Card
A unique ASIC chipset captures thelegendary Neve sound. Each card offers 324-band EQs or filters.
DRC (Dynamic RangeController) Card
32 exp/gates or compressors or limiters orany combination, and 32 individualsidechains for each of these 32 dynamicelements.
Colour Button Upgrade
Colour-coded buttons on the channel stripand central area aid identification of keycontrols, simplifying operation foroccasional users. Colour-coded controlsinclude buttons for automation modes andsolos, as shown in the drawing on page 1.

New 24-Bit I/O and Mic/Line Racks
Capricorn's unique proprietary hardwaredesign ensures that every audio signal ispreserved at full 24-bit quality within theconsole, even when extremes of EQ anddynamics processing are applied. A range ofnew inputs and outputs now fullycompletes the 24-bit signal chain, enablingsignals to be preserved at optimum qualitythroughout tracking and mixing.
Benefits include:
 24-bit performance
 Reduced rack size
 Reduced power consumption
Please Note. The following analogue and digital rackscan be connected in addition to the existingCapricorn I/O racks. Any combination ofexisting and new I/O racks is possible.
I/O, Mic/Line and Mic/LinePower Supply Racks
I/O RackThe I/O rack can accommodate up to 24I/O cards. These cards may be 24-bit QuadADCs or 24-bit Quad DACs. This rack willconnect into a Capricorn I/O card using apair of MADI connectors. As an example
one rack could have 12 ADC's and 12DAC's, giving 48 analogue inputs andoutputs in a compact 6u rack.

MADI/SRC Unit
AMS Neve's MADI SRC unit allows digitalmultitracks to be varispeeded just as easilyas analogue machines. It provides 24 or 48channels of sample rate conversion in twodirections simultaneously. This allowsrecording on all tracks of a vari-speedingmultitrack machine at the same time asmonitoring the track returns. The SRCaccepts a MADI input, generates a MADIoutput and can be used in series with anyother MADI equipped I/O racks.

TDIF/MADI Unit
Many studios are now choosing to useModular Digital Multitracks (MDMs) suchas Tascam DA88s to provide track capacityto supplement existing DASH machines.Use of such machines can lead to newflexibility in the production process, enabling material tracked in smaller studiosto be used not only as a guide, but also tobe incorporated in the finished project.
The TDIF-I interface has six 8 channelports fitted as standard making it suitablefor connecting up to six DA88 transports, resulting in a total of 48 tracks.
Multiple TDIF machines can betreated as a single digital multitrackwith up to 48 tracks, or alternativelythe machines can be usedindependently or offset against eachother.
 44.1kHz or 48kHz operation
Allows a standard TDIF machine tobe used as a 4-track 24-bit resolutiondigital recorder
Each of the six TDIF-1 ports can beindependently selected for 24-bitoperation
Synchronisation for the interfaces isselected from one of four sources:TTL wordclock, AES/EBU syncinput, MADI port or the first TDIFinput.
Full support of MADI channel status
