Livercanceristhefifthmostcommoncancerinmenandtheninthmostcommoncancerinwomen,anditislargelyaproblemofthelessdevelopedregions.In2012,worldwide,thereareestimatedtohavebeen782000newcases,with83%ofthesecasesoccurringinlessdevelopedregions(50%inChinaalone).Ofthistotalnumberofincidentcases,554000occurredinmen(accountingfor7.5%ofallincidentcancercasesinmen)and228000occurredinwomen(accountingfor3.4%ofallincidentcancercasesinwomen).Inmen,thehighestestimated2012age-standardizedincidencerates(per100000population)areineasternandsouth-easternAsia(with31.9and22.2cases,respectively).IntermediateratesareestimatedinsouthernEurope(9.5cases)andNorthAmerica(9.3cases),andthelowestestimatedratesareinnorthernEurope(4.6cases)andsouth-centralAsia(3.7cases).Inwomen,theincidenceisgenerallymuchlower,withthehighestestimated2012ratesineasternAsiaandwesternAfrica(10.2and8.1cases,respectively)andthelowestinnorthernEurope(1.9cases)andMicronesia(1.6cases).
Livercanceristhesecondmostcommoncauseofdeathfromcancerworldwide,estimatedtohavebeenresponsiblefornearly746000deathsin2012(9.1%ofallcancerdeathsthatyear).Theprognosisforlivercancerisverypoor(withanoverallratioofmortalitytoincidenceof0.95),sothegeographicalpatternsinincidenceandmortalityareverysimilar.
