New research suggests tummy tucks canlead to lasting weight loss
A study in the October issue of Plastic and ReconstructiveSurgery by Swiss researchers suggests that patients who haveundergone abdominoplasty following bariatric surgery (aprocedure which reduces the size of the stomach to helppatients reduce food intake and lose weight) were more likelyto keep weight off, regaining an average of less than 1kilogram a year compared with 1.8 kilograms annually forbariatric patients who didn’t have abdominoplasty procedures.
At North Adelaide Medical Centre in Adelaide we foundthis new study to be of interest too for many of our
patients who are concerned about their sagging skin andexcess belly fat, following bariatric surgery.
In the study, Tripp Holton, assistant professor of plasticsurgery at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine
stated that contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck can provide “a second wave of elation” that
helps a patient maintain their new shape and may also help motivate the patient to lose
more weight if necessary.

TUMMY TUCK: WHAT IT ISAND WHAT IT IS NOT
A tummy tuck cannot promise improved self-esteem howevermany of our patients say that they feel more confident. A tummytuck should also not be used as a treatment for obesity on itsown.
WHAT IT IS
it is important to realise that abdominoplasty should not be used asthe sole provider for actively trying to maintain your natural health.
Here at North Adelaide Medical Centre, we will never suggest using atummy tucks as a means to replace healthy eating and exercise.
It is important to follow a healthy diet and exercise routine as yourbody is not going through the process to improve things like your:
• muscular performance • high blood pressure • physical fitness • other medical conditions
Always follow a healthy exercise andeating plan to maintain your new shapefollowing your tummy tuck procedure
