Camping Standards
• Behaviours - improved
• Washing Up - much the same
• Fire Safety, safe access & egress - improving
• The Right Gear
• Food Storage
• Not many gadgets (ok, more important to get the
basics right – but not doing that either!)
• Interventions required
• Hot water / detergent issues
• 3 bowl method not the norm. 1-2 bowls in a number of sites;
3rd bowl dry in others.
• Actually doing the washing up…..
Foggy morning?
Probably not just one
camp’s grime!
Urrgghhh
Clean socks = healthy feet?
• Very few dome tents set up well
• Broken gear, not cleaned
• We would have had a lot of wet patrols if it had rained…
Yes, this was like this
all weekend!
Lots of patrol tents with
corner guys not pulling
in correct direction.
Good to store your
mess out of sight, but
not good for a
delicate dome tent
floor!
• Still patrols without fire blanket
• It’s in the SSS instructions
• Don’t know how to check for gas leaks
• Training required in how to respond to
a fire….
• Only a small number of fires this year.
Pull me!
Night Light?
That fork will hurt if
you’re in a hurry
Upside down Miss Jane
• Patrol boxes often used as dump sites.
• Or camp sites used as dump sites for patrol gear…?
Very nearly a camp
inspector injury!
• Lack of care and attention
• Even with ice deliveries there were some ice challenges
• Food boxes in the sun, not put away, etc.
Ice is heavy!
• “too busy”
• “no one helps” / no duty roster
• Patrol issues
• Most patrols did it “their way”. And yes, some are learning
from their mistakes.
• Obviously some patrols do a lot more patrol camping than
others.
• Some under-equipped for a full weekend in camp.
• Was food packed by Parent/Leader and then they didn’t know
what to do with it next day?
• All patrols had some form of shelter up.
• Some would have had issues with wind (e.g. 6x3 pop-up not
pegged or guyed)
• Many would have had issues with rain – elevated swimming
pools.
• Some great sites
• Gadgets and initiatives
• Lots of fun being had
• Struggle to set up a good campsite without the right gear
• Poor quality / too small…
• Or just not enough (e.g. wash up buckets)
• Did they forget to pack it?
• Inexperienced and needed more leader guidance?
• Group just doesn’t own the gear they need?
• Overall behaviour was better than 2017.
• Some patrols not set up for success – PL/APL difficulties, Scouts
who aren’t able to cope with a 4 day camp.
• Patrols to stay in campsite until finished clean-up.
• Lack of respect for PL / duty roster / etc.
