CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETYSEASON 2014-15
2 SEASON 2014-15 | www.cums.org.uk
Welcome to the CUMS 2014-15 Season. Following the phenomenal success of last year’s music-making, this year promises even greater spoils. We are delighted to welcome both the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra and the Cambridge University New Music Ensemble to the CUMS family – we will be joining the latter in November, for a celebration of the great Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s 80th Birthday year which will include performances by the Arditti Quartet and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Oliver Knussen.
Our Competitions continue to offer exceptional opportunities for the most talented of the University’s musicians and the winners will be a cantus firmus throughout the coming season. Our Concerto Competition Winners, Eleanor Kornas and Rees Webster, perform with the CUMS ensembles – Eleanor alongside Conducting Scholar Joel Sandelson in March and Rees with Cambridge favourite Peter Stark in October. Don’t miss the premières of new works by our joint Composers-in-Residence, Peter Yarde Martin and Alex Tay; both promise to be terrific additions to the concert season.
Martin Ennis, Margaret Faultless and Jeremy West join forces for a third time, to present ‘From Venice to Leipzig.’ If their previous two collaborations are anything to go by, this will be one of the season’s most exciting events. It is impossible to mention the terrific work of each of our ensembles, but I encourage you to support as many as possible. I would like to thank our volunteers and supporters without whose support this season would not be possible and I look forward to sharing with you the many wonderful musical experiences the 2014-15 season offers.

As Assistant Conductors of CUMS, Quintin Beer, Benedict Kearns and I are incredibly excited about conducting CUMS Concert Orchestra and Cambridge University Wind Orchestra. These orchestras have always offered fantastic opportunities for the University’s student conductors and soloists; in the past CUMS CO has played under the baton of Sir David Willcocks, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Edward Higginbottom. This year I’m particularly looking forward to the Varsity concert with Oxford University Wind Orchestra - which I’m sure will be fabulously entertaining.
I joined the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra at the beginning of last year, and have had the opportunity to play repertoire ranging from Handel’s Water Music, through
Beethoven symphonies to Bartok and Martinu. In November, the Chamber Orchestra has been invited to join Britten Sinfonia and
CUMS Chorus, to perform Britten’s War Reqiuem in Ely Cathedral, conducted by Stephen Cleobury, and I’m sure this will be a powerful
and moving experience. The CUMS Chorus have a wonderful year ahead, particularly Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony in King’s College Chapel.

PresidentCambridge University Chamber Orchestra
Harry Hickmore
The highlight of my first year in Cambridge has been playing principal flute in CUMS Symphony Orchestra, as one small part of our huge force. Now, as incoming president of CUMS SO, I am particularly excited about this year; from working with Peter Donohoe on Brahms’ first Piano Concerto, to other great symphonic repertoire including Berlioz’s masterpiece, Symphonie fantastique. We end the year with a flourish - performing Verdi’s famous Requiem with CUMS Chorus and members of The Bach Choir, in the glorious surroundings of King’s College Chapel – how thrilling!
The Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra is an ensemble like no other and I’m thrilled to be their president this year. Working on week-long projects with
world-class conductors and soloists, the 40-piece chamber ensemble strives for the highest musical standards. This year’s CUCO programme combines staples of the classical repertoire in Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 with less well-known works, such as Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin. In May, the orchestra joins forces with the Cambridge University Chamber Choir to perform Brahms Gesang der
Parzen and Nanie under the baton of Venezuelan conductor, Carlos Izcaray, who returns to Cambridge after a very well-received concert last season.

OUR HISTORY
CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished university music societies in the world. It offers a world class musical education for members of the university and local residents, nurturing the great musicians of the future and providing performing opportunities for over 500 Cambridge musicians every year.
The society has played a pivotal role in British musical life for almost 170 years. It has educated Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner, Christopher Hogwood and Robin Ticciati, has premièred works by Brahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Rutter, Saxton and Vaughan Williams, and has given generations of Cambridge musicians the experience of visiting conductors and soloists including Britten, Dvořák, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Since the 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several of Britain’s finest musicians, including Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and, from 1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury.
In 2009, Stephen Cleobury assumed a new role as Principal Conductor of the CUMS Chorus, and Sir Roger Norrington was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor. Martin Yates joined the team as Principal Conductor of the CUMS Symphony Orchestra, and a Great Conductors series was launched to expose CUMS members to a succession of world-class visiting conductors.
In 2010, CUMS entered another new phase when it merged with the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra and Cambridge University Music Club. In October 2010, the society launched the Cambridge University Lunchtime Concerts – a new series of weekly chamber recitals at West Road Concert Hall showcasing our finest musical talent. In 2011 it merged with the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, which is directed by Martin Ennis and David Lowe.
CUMS continues to provide opportunities for our finest student soloists and conductors by awarding conducting scholarships and concerto prizes, and it encourages new music by running a Composition Competition and premièring at least one new work each year. Recent highlights have included Wagner’s Parsifal conducted by Sir Mark Elder, a recording of Haydn and Mozart symphonies with Sir Roger Norrington, and a recording of The Epic of Everest’s original score for the British Film Institute.
24 SEASON 2014-15 | www.cums.org.uk
Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided unique opportunities for successive generations of Cambridge musicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural life of the University and City, and, having launched many of the biggest careers in classical music, it has played a pivotal role in the musical world beyond.
CUMS receives no core funding from the University, and income from ticket sales does not meet the full cost of delivering a world-class musical education. The CUMS Supporters’ Circle has been established to address this pressing financial need. All those who value Cambridge’s vibrant musical heritage, and want to maintain it for the 21st Century, are invited to join the Circle.
