Have had opportunities to practice multiplication and division from YR-Y6
Apply calculation methods to questions and consider how best to support children
ContextContextSome children at BJR get a lot of support
at home, others get noneMethods and strategies taught at home
can be different from those taught at school
Some children find it difficult to apply home learning to school
This can lead to a great deal of confusion ESPECIALLY in Y5 and 6

Multiplication Y1Multiplication Y1
Doubling numbers e.g. 5 + 5 = 10.Say things like, “What is double 4?”The ‘X’ symbol is then introduced.5 x 2 = 10
Multipication Y1/2Multipication Y1/2
Arrays are used to show multiplication in a pictorial form. 4 x 3 = 12 or 3 x 4 = 12
This also illustrates repeated addition because 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
