SPRINTING 3-YEAR-OLDSSTEP OUT IN PAVILION
Wednesday=s G3 Merriebelle Pavilion S. serves as the re-
introduction of last year=s G2 Gimcrack S. winner Blue Point
(Ire)(Shamardal), who could take high rank among the
sprinters this term and is being geared towards the G1
Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Impressive in that juvenile
feature of the York Ebor meeting in August, Godolphin=s >TDN
Rising Star= was also second in the G1 Middle Park S. at
Newmarket in September and third in the G1 Dewhurst S.
trying seven furlongs back there the following month. AI am
delighted with Blue Point, who wintered well in Dubai,@ trainer
Charlie Appleby commented. AHe has done all I have asked of
him to date and I have been pleased with his preparation. He
showed a lot of natural speed as a 2-year-old and this race is a
good starting point before hopefully going on to the
Commonwealth Cup.@ Clive Cox has a solid hand in the G2 Mill
Reef S. winner Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the G2
Prix Robert Papin winner Tis Marvellous (GB) (Harbour Watch
{Ire}). Cox said of his challengers, "They've both got identical
ratings, though Harry Angel is carrying a penalty. I'm hoping
they are both on the path towards the Commonwealth Cup at
Royal Ascot, but as there are such limited options before it
they are having to run against each other already.@

PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: THE BLACK PRINCESSBy Andrew Caulfield
I don=t know how much Sheikh Mohammed paid for Park
Appeal after this filly completed her unbeaten juvenile
campaign but one thing=s for sure--he has rarely made a better
investment. Not that the purchase of this daughter of Ahonoora
yielded any immediate dividends. The GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile
Fillies, two weeks after her change of ownership, had been
mentioned as a target by trainer Jim Bolger, but a virus put an
end to that ambitious plan. Park Appeal=s first appearance in
Sheikh Mohammed=s colours came in the 1985 G1 Poule d=Essai
des Pouliches. Despite being up against Alydar=s Best, who had
defeated the colts in the G1 Gran Criterium, the Irish challenger
started favourite on the strength of decisive victories in the
G1 Moyglare Stud S. and the G1 Cheveley Park S. (which she
took by an impressive four lengths). Park Appeal could finish
only seventh at Longchamp and she never raced again in
Europe. Cont. p3

Pavilion S. cont. from p1
AIt's a cracking renewal and totally warrants being upgraded
from a listed to a Group 3,@ Cox added. AI'm proud to have two
good enough to be considered for it, but it's just a shame they
have to take each other on. As ever with sprinters, though, you
just want to get them going." John Gosden drops >TDN Rising
Star= Seven Heavens (GB) (Frankel {GB}) back in trip after his
third in the seven-furlong Listed European Free H. at Newmarket
on Apr. 19.
HARBOUR DUTY Ascot plays host to the G3 Longines Sagaro S. on Wednesday,
when Jackie Cornwell=s G1 St Leger winner Harbour Law (GB)
(Lawman {Fr}) makes his return ahead of a possible staying
campaign which will take in Royal Ascot=s feature G1 Gold Cup.
Making the most of the unseat of Idaho (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the
Doncaster Classic in September, the bay--who had previously
shown he stays this far when second in the Listed Queen=s Vase
at the Royal meeting in June--has a four-pound penalty and is
ridden by a new jockey in Tom Queally in place of the injury-
stricken George Baker. AHe=s in good heart and he=s ready to go,@
trainer Laura Mongan said.
AHe wintered well. He went to his owners and then came back
to us in mid-January. There=s no doubt it will be emotional
without George, though. While taking nothing away from Tom,
who is an excellent jockey and rode him at Lingfield the other
day, George is a big part of the jigsaw puzzle with this horse.
Doncaster was such an amazing day, one we=ll never forget, but
we=ve always felt this horse would be even better with another
winter on his back. He=s matured physically and mentally and we
think he=s come on a lot. All being equal, I don=t think he=d run
again before the Gold Cup [at Royal Ascot on June 22] and we
think he=ll stay that far. After that, the races pick themselves.@
Heading the opposition is the G2 Doncaster Cup and G3 Henry II
S. winner Pallasator (GB) (Motivator {GB}), while the G2 Prix
Kergorlay scorer Nearly Caught (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) is one
of three from the Hughie Morrison stable along with the
authoritative Cesarewitch H. winner Sweet Selection (GB)
(Stimulation {Ire}). He said of the latter, AWe=ve got to be
realistic with Sweet Selection. It=s a massive step up from
handicaps into group races. How she=ll run I=ve no idea, because
she=s a terrible worker at home. She=s from a decent family--her
half-sister [Lightning Thunder] nearly won the Guineas, so if we
can get black-type she becomes a valuable broodmare.@

Pedigree Insights: The Black Princess
cont. from p1 Three starts in the U.S. as a 4-year-old yielded
just one win, in a restricted stakes race at
Hollywood Park.
At the time of her conception, Park Appeal=s
pedigree could have been described as more plebeian than
patrician. Her sire Ahonoora and broodmare sire Balidar had
been sprinters. Ahonoora, of course, was to transform himself
from an inexpensive speed sire into a sire of Classic winners and
Park Appeal=s dam Balidaress was to prove herself a very worthy
member of a highly distinguished female line. Balidaress=s fourth
dam Sister Sarah was--among other things--the second dam of
Nearctic and her female line traced all the way back to the
legendary Pretty Polly.
THE BLACK PRINCESS (FR), F, 4
Lifetime Record: GSW-Fr, GSP-Eng, 6-3-2-1, $125,134.
The first to launch Balidaress to stardom was Desirable, her
third foal. This daughter of Lord Gayle also won the G1 Cheveley
Park S. and she sold for 1,000,000gns as a 3-year-old in 1984,
having finished third in the G1 1000 Guineas. Park Appeal also
had a group-winning brother in Nashamaa and a Classic-winning
half-sister in Alydaress (G1 Irish Oaks). No fewer than five of
Balidaress=s daughters were to produce a total of nine group
winners. Pride of place went to Balistroika=s outstanding 1000
Guineas winner Russian Rhythm, to Desirable=s 1000 Guineas
winner Shadayid and Park Appeal=s G1 Lockinge S. winner Cape
Cross, whose descendants have made such an enormous impact
on the G1 Derby. Cont. p4

Andrew Caulfield cont.
The Balidaress female line has now produced more than 20
group winners, with Park Appeal=s contribution standing at six.
Her Sadler=s Wells filly Arvola visited Warning to produce Diktat,
Europe=s champion older sprinter of 1999. Park Appeal=s first
foal, the Nureyev filly Pastorale, also did well. Pastorale made a
winning debut at Newmarket as a 3-year-old, creating such a
favourable impression that she started at 6-1 for the G1 Irish
1000 Guineas. Although she disappointed at The Curragh,
Pastorale has made full amends by becoming the dam of three
group winners, headed by Iffraaj, a triple Group 2 winner over
seven furlongs, and the gelding Farraaj, who was rated as high
as 125 by Timeform.
The reason for this lengthy summary of the exploits of Park
Appeal and her family is that Sunday=s G3 Prix Allez France was
won in good style by The Black Princess. This filly is inbred 3 x 3
to Park Appeal, as she is by Iffraaj out of a daughter of Cape
Cross.
Although neither Iffraaj nor Cape Cross exhibited much
stamina, The Black Princess is very much at home over middle
distances, as she showed when third in the G2 Ribblesdale S.
over a mile-and-a-half. Coincidentally, the Iffraaj--Cape Cross
partnership=s other group winner, the German colt Magic Artist,
also gained his group victory over a mile and a quarter. These
two come from a sample of 10 starters.
There are several parallels between the careers of Iffraaj and
Cape Cross. Cape Cross started his career at only IR,8,000 at
Kildangan Stud and did so well that his fee peaked at i50,000.
Iffraaj also began his stallion career at Kildangan, starting at
i12,000. Although his fee fell as low as i6,000 by his fourth
season, he too has done very well--well enough for his fee to
rise to ,27,500 this year.
Iffraaj first drew attention to himself by siring 38 juvenile
winners in his first crop, including the unbeaten Group 1 winner
Wootton Bassett, while Cape Cross became champion sire of
2-year-olds with his first crop.
Iffraaj is now 16 years old and is making his mark in several
areas. Wootton Bassett, of course, is the sire of Almanzor, the
top-ranked European horse of 2016, and Iffraaj=s broodmare
daughters are also off the mark at Group 1 level, thanks to this
year=s New Zealand 2-year-old Melody Belle.
Iffraaj=s New Zealand-sired progeny have played a significant
role in his success story. This year has seen his son Gingernuts
win the G1 New Zealand Derby and the G1 Rosehill Guineas in
Australia, while Jon Snow has won the G1 Australian Derby, so
here again we have Iffraaj=s progeny staying much better than
he did.
His New Zealand progeny have also helped highlight Iffraaj=s
affinity for Danehill mares, with Turn Me Loose, a triple Group 1
winner, and Fix, a triple Group 2 winner, both being out of
Danehill mares. Danehill=s daughters also produced his smart
Northern Hemisphere performers Chriselliam, Nathra and
Latharnach. These five black-type winners come from the first
16 starters out of Danehill mares, so this is a partnership worth
keeping an eye on--especially when he also has group winners
out of mares by Danehill=s sons Dansili and Danzero. Cont. p5

Caulfield cont.
Having pointed out the Park Appeal inbreeding in The Black
Princess=s pedigree, I should add that there are other possible
explanations for the filly=s talent. She comes from a first-rate
family and her 2-year-old half-sister, the Dark Angel filly
Gabrielle, is in training with Andre Fabre. Their dam Larceny
managed only one start but this daughter of Cape Cross has the
distinction of being closely related to Lawman, winner of the G1
Prix du Jockey-Club and G1 Prix Jean Prat. Lawman was sired by
Invincible Spirit, who shares the same sire, Green Desert, as
Cape Cross.
The Black Princess=s second dam, the Gulch mare Laramie, is a
member of that very select number of mares with more than
one Classic winner to their credit. Mated to Ahonoora=s son
Inchinor, Laramie produced the 2004 G1 Prix de Diane winner
Latice and she also produced the speedy Group 3 winner Satri to
Mujadil.
Laramie showed only a little ability but comes from an
excellent female line. The Black Princess=s third dam, the Shirley
Heights mare Light The Lights, ranked among France=s best
staying fillies in 1988, when she won the G2 Prix de Pomone
before running well in the G1 Prix Vermeille and the Arc. The
fourth dam, that accomplished broodmare Lighted Glory, was
also a Group 1 performer in France, as well as being a half-sister
to the very smart stayers King Luthier and Torus. This female line
traces to the 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play, whose
descendants have won all five British Classics.
BARNEY ROY WORKS FOR GUINEAS Godolphin=s Barney Roy (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) put in his
final piece of work on Tuesday ahead of Saturday=s G1 Qipco
2000 Guineas. The G3 Greenham S. winner worked in company
with his Richard Hannon stablemate Larchmont Lad (Ire)
(Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who will also line up at Newmarket.
"I gave them both a little blow out this morning and I couldn't
have been happier with them," Hannon said. ABarney Roy is a
horse we have been very excited about for a long time and he
confirmed our views in impressive style when taking the
Greenham. He still ran a bit green that day and I believe the step
up in trip and the extra experience will stand him in good stead.
Cheveley Park Stud=s G3 Tattersalls S. winner Larchmont Lad
was fifth in his reappearance in the G3 Craven S. on Apr. 20.
"Larchmont Lad, my other runner who is now owned by
Cheveley Park Stud, worked very nicely today and has definitely
come on from his first run at Newmarket," Hannon added. "He
was on the wrong side of the track that day and got tired over
the last furlong. He seems to be in much better order and I
expect a bolder sighting of him on the big day."

REFLECTION GEARING UP FOR RETURN Last year=s champion sprinter Quiet Reflection (GB)
(Showcasing {GB}) is drawing closer to her 4-year-old debut,
which is likely to come in the G2 Duke of York S. on May 17 or
Haydock=s G2 Temple S. 10 days later. Trainer Karl Burke said the
bay could go for a racecourse gallop at Redcar on Thursday.
"She's in great form and I'm thinking of taking her for a day out
after racing at Redcar on Thursday,@ the trainer said. AI think
that will do her good. At the moment I'm favouring going to
Haydock for the Temple with her, but it all depends if there's
'soft' in the going description. Saying that, if it came up slow at
York we might go there."
CARAVAGGIO ON COURSE FOR POULAINS Last year=s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. and G2 Coventry S. winner
Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) remains on course for the May 14
G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains after being removed from
Saturday=s G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas. The unbeaten Caravaggio
has not been seen since his Phoenix win in August and trainer
Aidan O=Brien said, "We always had our eye on the French race
with him and his big works are going to be this weekend. He's
going to do plenty this week and then we'll see how we are
going. We know that he can go sprinting anytime. He's not short
of pace."
DAWN WIGAN DIES Dawn Wigan, who formerly ran West Blagdon Stud, died on
Sunday aged 98 after a long illness, according to Racing Post.
Wigan is the mother of James Wigan of London Thoroughbred
Services, who now runs West Blagdon, and is also survived by
three other children.
Dawn Wigan inherited West Blagdon from her father, Charles
Gordon, in 1959 and ran it with her husband Dare Wigan, who
died in 1993. The stud has historically done well at the
Tattersalls December Foal Sale. Under Dawn Wigan=s direction
West Blagdon achieved top price at the sale five times despite
owning an average of four mares. James Wigan has continued
that standard after expanding the broodmare band to around
24, and has sold the top-priced lot at that sale the last two
years.
SWISS SPIRIT FILLY ADDED TO GUINEAS SALE A daughter of Swiss Spirit (GB) has been added to the
Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up and Horses-in-Training Sale on
May 5. Lot 269A is a half to two winners and her dam, Early
Morning Rain (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), is a half-sister to
three stakes winners including G1 Irish Derby and GI Secretariat
S. winner Treasure Beach (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).
Two-year-olds slated for the sale will breeze on May 4
beginning at 9 a.m.

RECORD-SETTING FILLY GRADUATES AT
VAAL by Alan Carasso
Best Kept Secret (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}), who established a
new record price for a filly sold in South Africa at the 2016 Cape
Premier Yearling Sale, was off the mark at third asking Tuesday
at the Vaal, landing a maiden juvenile plate over 1200m.
Trained by Mike de Kock for the partnership of Mrs. John
Magnier, Mrs. Diane Nagle, Maine Chance Farms and Mayfair
Speculators, Best Kept Secret was in front entering the final
quarter-mile for jockey Callan Murray, went clear inside the
furlong and was kept to her task late to best the well-backed Let
It Flow (SAf) (Judpot) by a diminishing half-length as the 29-20
joint favorite.
Bred by the BBP Syndicate, the full-sister to Equus Award-
winning juvenile filly and treble Grade 1 winner All Is Secret (SAf)
and G1SW The Secret Is Out (SAf) was consigned to the Premier
Sale by Klawervlei Stud as agent and was hammered down to
Tina Rau Bloodstock and Coolmore=s M.V. Magnier for R5.2
million (,223,004/i291,401). That result came not long after
Mayfair and Coolmore joined forces to acquire the sale=s top lot,
a colt by Silvano (Ger)--National Banker (SAf) (Fort Wood) for a
record-setting R6 million. Now named Silver Coin and under the
care of Joey Ramsden, the Drakenstein Stud-bred bay broke his
maiden at first asking as the 5-4 favorite at Kenilworth Apr. 4.

PARADISE WOODSFAVORED IN OAKS
Herman Sarkowsky and Mr. & Mrs. Martin Wygod=s >TDN
Rising Star= Paradise Woods (Union Rags) drew gate four and
was installed the 5-2 morning-line favorite by Mike Battaglia for
Friday=s running of the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill
Downs. Bred by Sarkowsky, the bay filly is one of the least-tried
runners in the full field of 14 sophomore fillies, with just three
starts, but exits the single most dominating performance along
the road to the Oaks, an 11-length defeat of Abel Tasman
(Quality Road) when last seen in the GI Santa Anita Oaks Apr. 8.
AShe=s come a long way fast and its an obstacle to overcome
the crowd with an inexperienced filly, but we=ll give it a shot,@
said trainer Richard Mandella, in search of a first victory in the
race.
Riding a five-race winning skein is Miss Sky Warrior (First
Samurai), the Kelly Breen-trainee who was made the 9-2 second
selection and will break from the 10-post.
AI don=t know if I could have drawn it up any better,@ Breen
said. AIf they let me draw the pills and decide who went where,
the 10-post is probably the best spot for us. We were the first
one drawn and even if the other speed drew outside of us, we
could have dictated it from the 10. It's a perfect position for us.
Paco [Lopez] is a great gate rider with a good head on his
shoulders. He=ll be able to see what we=re going to have to do.@

TAPWRIT A 2015 >BEST SELLER= FOR RIGGIOby Steve Sherack
LOUISVILLE, KY - Books aren't the only thing that Len Riggio
has been making headlines selling these days.
The Barnes & Noble founder has also accumulated quite the
collection of broodmares over the past decade or so and will
have his name listed in the program as a breeder at Saturday=s
GI Kentucky Derby via GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby
hero Tapwrit (Tapit).
AI look at it as a privilege to be able to have the means to
breed horses that can compete at this level,@ said Riggio, who
built his aforementioned Fortune 500 company from just a
single college bookstore back in 1965. "For the size of our
operation, if we get one Grade I or one very good one a year,
we're doing great.@ Cont. p3

Oaks draw cont.
The joint third choices at 5-1 are Coffeepot Stables= Farrell
(Malibu Moon, post 7), victress of both the GII Rachel Alexandra
S. and GII Fair Grounds Oaks, and GI Los Alamitos Starlet S.
heroine Abel Tasman (post 13).
AI do like the seven,@ trainer Wayne Catalano said of Farrell=s
post. AWhen I school her, I have been putting her in the seven,
so it came out how we=ve been putting her in there.@
Salty (Quality Road) has been pegged as a 6-1 gamble. Also a
veteran of only three races, Salty will have to work out a trip
from the 14-hole, though the draw was of minimal concern to
trainer Mark Casse.
AWell if we got that in the Derby we=d be happy,@ he
commented. AIt could have been worse. I don=t think our filly has
a lot of speed, so the post could=ve been a little harder on some
of the others.@
Sailor=s Valentine (Mizzen Mast), a 22-1 upsetter of the
GI Central Bank Ashland Apr. 8 at Keeneland, was given a 30-1
chance on the Oaks morning line and drew post eight.
AIt=s perfect for her,@ trainer Eddie Kenneally said. AI really like
the post.@

Tapwrit a 2015 >Best Seller= for Riggio cont.
AWe probably raced 25 or so like Tapwrit and then we sold
him,@ Riggio, who primarily breeds to race, said with a laugh.
AThat's just the way it goes.@
The 76-year-old continued, AHe was the first horse of that
value that we ever sold. You never know with these horses. It's
like catching lightning in a bottle.@
Tapwrit, a very good second behind McCraken (Ghostzapper)
in Tampa=s GIII Sam F. Davis S., heads to Louisville for trainer
Todd Pletcher off a fifth-place finish after a slow start in the
GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland Apr. 8.
AWe=ll be rooting for him,@ Riggio said. AWe own the mare--I
hope he wins everything.@
Appealing Zophie's 2-year-old colt by Candy Ride (Arg) brought
$375,000 from John C. Oxley at the recently concluded OBS April
Sale. Barren for 2017, Appealing Zophie is also represented by a
Speightstown yearling colt and is currently in foal to Frosted on
a Feb. 24 cover.
Riggio's broodmare band is headed by the 20-year-old Oatsee
(Unbridled), the dam of GI Preakness S. hero Shackleford
(Forestry), GI Alabama S. heroine Lady Joanne (Orientate) and
two other graded winners. The 2011 Broodmare of the Year was
purchased by Riggio for $1.55 million while in foal to A.P. Indy at
the 2008 Keeneland November sale. The resulting produce
Stephanoatsee carried Riggio's hunter green-and-camel silks to a
win in the 2012 Barbaro S. at Delaware Park and a pair of
graded-stakes placings.
Oatsee also has an unraced 3-year-old filly by Frankel (GB); a
2-year-old filly by Distorted Humor; a yearling colt by Malibu
Moon; and a Ghostzapper colt, just foaled Apr. 17.
AOatsee is our prize,@ said Riggio, who splits his 30 or so
broodmares between Kentucky and his farm on Long Island.
AShe's almost been like a factory, producing winner after
winner.@
He continued, A[Kern Thoroughbreds President] Lincoln Collins
is our manager and Alan Porter helps Lincoln and I in making
selections for the matings. You spend all this time being
conscientious and you make an informed decision... And then
you pray. And if you're lucky, three percent of the time, you're
right.@
Riggio's broodmare band also includes: GISWs Funny Moon
(Malibu Moon) ($2.3 million >11 FTKNOV); Love Theway Youare
(Arch) ($1.45 million >12 FTKNOV); Miss Shop (Deputy Minister),
the dam of the promising MGSW Tin Type Gal (Tapit); as well as
the multiple stakes-placed half-sister to leading sire Tapit,
Overandabeauty (Grand Slam) ($750,000 >06 KEESEP);
and the stakes-winning My Meadowview homebred Marion
Ravenwood (A. P. Indy).
AWe have a horse farm on Long Island in the Hamptons--that's
where we have our New York-bred program, which produced
Samraat (Noble Causeway),@ Riggio beamed of the 2014
GIII Gotham S. hero and GI Wood Memorial S. runner-up. AAnd
that, of course, was a big thrill for us. You just don't see
championship-caliber horses being born and bred out there.@
The late Noble Causeway (Giant's Causeway), a $1.15-million
KEESEP yearling purchase in 2003, gave Riggio his first taste of
competing on the big stage. The 2005 GI Florida Derby
runner-up--unplaced in that term's Kentucky Derby and
GI Preakness S. for Nick Zito--went on to sire Samraat, who
began his career with five straight wins, including a trio of stakes
victories.
Trained by Rick Violette, Samraat reported home a respectable
fifth behind two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome
(Lucky Pulpit) in the first leg of the Triple Crown. He was a close
second in last year=s GII Suburban H. at Belmont.
AWe were very fortunate, one of the first horses that we
bought was Noble Causeway,@ Riggio explained. AWe kind of got
spoiled right at the beginning.@
Riggio--one of 16 members of the New York Racing
Association's Board of Directors--always had an interest in racing
while growing up in Brooklyn, but it wasn't until 2001 that he
began putting together his stable.
AIt started quite by accident,@ Riggio explained. AMy wife and
daughter love the show horse world and they would be buying a
horse every year or so and I finally said to my wife, >Hey, is it OK
if I buy one to race?' It really started out as innocently as that.@
Riggio's wife Louise is on the board of directors at the Maker's
Mark Secretariat Center, a reschooling facility and showcase for
adoptable Thoroughbreds located in the Kentucky Horse Park in
Lexington. His daughter Stephanie is a nationally ranked hunter
jumper. Cont. p5

AUltimately, we got the bug to have our own breeding
operation when >Noble' became a sire,@ Riggio said. AWe bought
a bunch of mares for him and then we kind of got, I want to say,
addicted.@
And addicted for all the right reasons.
ABeing able to watch the horses being born, get on their legs
for the first time, and seeing them go through the paces of
growing into adults--all of that, I must say, is more thrilling than
the race itself,@ Riggio concluded. AWith every one of them,
you're just full of hope and you really get to love these
magnificent creatures.@
TUESDAY=S TRACKSIDE DERBY REPORT
by Steve Sherack
LOUISVILLE, Ky - Sunny skies, a buzzing backstretch and a
packed house filled with enthusiastic racing fans and throngs of
media. It really doesn=t get much better than spending a
morning at Churchill Downs during GI Kentucky Derby week.
There was once again no shortage of action to take in during
Tuesday=s 15-minute training period reserved for the
Derby/Oaks runners, led by appearances from some new faces.
Godolphin=s G2 UAE Derby winner Thunder Snow (Ire)
(Helmet {Aus})--understandably a bit fresh after clearing a 42-
hour window in quarantine--briefly attempted to rear up on the
clubhouse turn while jogging along the outer rail, but was much
more composed once allowed to canter the circuit for a mile.
The Dubai invader certainly had a nice spring to his step while
guided by Godolphin exercise rider Daragh O=Donohoe.
The Spendthrift Farm team was out in force--including owner
B. Wayne Hughes, Ned Toffey and Mark Toothaker--to watch
the farm=s future stallion and GI Santa Anita Derby winner
Gormley (Malibu Moon) stretch his legs for the first time
beneath the Twin Spires since arriving from Southern California.
Spendthrift, of course, also stands the handsome blaze-faced
bay=s sire, Malibu Moon. Gormley, sporting a shadow roll, was
clearly looking to do more during his gallop as exercise rider
Cisco Alvarado had a very snug hold throughout.
>TDN Rising Star= and GII Wood Memorial hero Irish War Cry
(Curlin) made his presence immediately felt while entering the
track by the chute wearing blue wraps and a flashy browband
with the blue-and-red Graham Motion stable colors. He, too,
was plenty eager while galloping approximately a mile during his
first trip to the track since
arriving from Maryland
Monday.
The lightly raced >TDN
Rising Star= Patch (Union
Rags), meanwhile, just
keeps going about his
business like a seasoned
pro, despite losing his left
eye as an unraced 2-year-
old. AAs a 2-year-old, he
developed an ulcer and
we did everything to try to save his eye, but even with the best
of care, the eye had to be removed,@ Calumet General Manager
Eddie Kane told TDN. Cont. p6

Kane added that the Calumet homebred and GII Louisiana
Derby runner-up was actually named before he lost his eye--it=s
a play off of his sire=s name.
With training hours winding down, a large group of
photographers and media types gathered back at Barn 41 as
>TDN Rising Star= Battle of Midway (Smart Strike), under the
watchful eye of Jerry Hollendorfer assistant Christina Jelm, Irap
(Tiznow) and Irish War Cry were all out for baths.
Barn Notes...
Always Dreaming (Bodemeister), out early once again to
gallop at 5:50 a.m., was much more settled during his training
session Tuesday, his second straight day equipped with draw
reins. AI thought he went great this morning,@ trainer Todd
Pletcher said. AI very much liked what I saw.@
Trainer Chad Brown revealed that Practical Joke (Into
Mischief), second in the Blue Grass, will not be adding blinkers in
the Derby.
SHOWTIME So now we=ve arrived: this weekend sees the
first four North American and European Classics
of the season: the GI Kentucky Oaks on Friday,
followed by the G1 English 2000 Guineas Saturday
morning US time, the GI Kentucky Derby Saturday
afternoon, and the G1 English 1000 Guineas on Sunday at
Newmarket. The Kentucky Oaks is dominated by >TDN Rising
Star= Paradise Woods, impressive winner of the GI Santa Anita
Oaks by nearly 12 lengths and one of three Grade I-winning
fillies from the first crop by Lane=s End=s Union Rags; and Farrell,
by a top filly sire in Malibu Moon, winner of her last four,
including a sweep of the three filly races at Fair Grounds, among
them convincing wins in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. and GII Fair
Grounds Oaks.
This year=s Kentucky Derby, as has been widely trailed, is a
different kettle of fish, with a win by one of maybe 15 of the 20
probable starters within the realms of possibility (the last time
the landscape looked like this, in 2009, I had 14 horses live in a
Pick 3 and Mine That Bird won at 51-1, leaving a certain
Pioneerof the Nile toiling in the slop).
But wait: every year one or two horses seem to bloom at
Churchill Downs and those horses are usually a danger to all.
I was all set to declare five-length GI Xpressbet Florida Derby
winner Always Dreaming, from WinStar Farm=s Bodemeister=s
first crop (the second and third were also from the first crop of
3-year-olds by their sires: State of Honor, by Gainesway=s To
Honor And Serve; and Gunnevera, by Darby Dan=s Dialed In) the
Derby favorite after his impressive :59:3/5 work last Friday, but
subsequently he has evidently been very keen in his work.
Seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, who
trained a previous Derby winner in Super Saver in 2010, doesn=t
have a lot of time to sort Always Dreaming out, and being too
keen in the Derby is a sure formula to falter in that final 10th
furlong. Bodemeister himself won the GI Arkansas Derby by nine
lengths over nine furlongs, but couldn=t quite get the trip after
setting a scorching pace, in either the Derby or the GI Preakness
S., and Always Dreaming=s female family has more sprinters and
milers than two-turn horses in it. I still think he=ll be the favorite,
but not by as much as I thought he would be just after his work.
Bodemeister is of course by Empire Maker, himself repatriated
to Gainesway for the 2016 breeding season after a stint in
Japan. Pioneerof the Nile, like Bodemeister a WinStar stallion, is
also by Empire Maker, and Pioneerof the Nile is also the sire of
2016 champion 2-year-old colt and GI Arkansas Derby winner
Classic Empire, who should be vying for second favoritism with
GI Wood Memorial winner and >Rising Star= Irish War Cry
(Curlin). If nothing else, Empire Maker (by Unbridled, by
Fappiano) should end up as the grandsire of two of the top
three favorites for the Derby. I=ve said before, Florida form looks
best to me this year: all three probable favorites raced on the
dirt in Florida this winter, as did fellow >Rising Star= McCraken,
Gunnevera, State of Honor, Practical Joke, and Tapwrit.

What second-crop sires are most likely to benefit from the
exploits of their sons and daughters in the Classic season? Darby
Dan=s Shackleford is the leading North American second-crop
sire (with first 3-year-olds) by 2017 earnings, with 21 winners
and the earners of $1,502,847 through Monday (click here). The
bulk of that money came as a result of >TDN Rising Star=
Malagacy=s win in the $900K GII Rebel S., but he is out of the
Derby, so Shackleford could be caught for the title of Leading
Second-Crop Sire. There are really three sires with runners with
major chances this weekend: Bodemeister, of course, sire of
Always Dreaming; Dialed In, sire of Gunnevera, who looks nailed
on to stay the trip and thus becomes a good horse to use in the
gimmicks; and Union Rags, sire of the GI Kentucky Oaks favorite
Paradise Woods. We=d better throw in the European Darley sire
Helmet, an Australian-bred reverse shuttler by Exceed And
Excel, since Godolphin announced they are sending GII UAE
Derby hero Thunder Snow to Kentucky. Because of that win,
Helmet=s YTD progeny earnings are only just behind
Shackleford=s, and he is the leading European second-crop sire
by 2017 worldwide progeny earnings, ahead of Juddmonte=s
Frankel (click here).
Only 12 colts were nominated for Saturday=s G1 English 2000
Guineas at Monday=s six-day entry stage, including four trained
by Aidan O=Brien and two each by Saeed bin Suroor and Richard
Hannon, although one of Hannon=s is G3 Greenham S. winner
Barney Roy, now owned by Godolphin, so they have a total of
three nominated. It=s going to be a small field, and only four
horses are quoted under 10-1 on Betfair as of Monday.
Coolmore=s Churchill (by Galileo out of Meow, by Storm Cat),
beaten at six furlongs first time out, then winner of five straight
at seven furlongs as a 2-year-old, including the G1 National S.
and the G1 Dewhurst S., and the undisputed champion
2-year-old of Europe 2016, was trading at 8-5 on Betfair
yesterday. Two others were trading around 4-1: the
G3 Greenham winner, Barney Roy, from the first crop by the
Coolmore sire, Excelebration; and Al Shaqab=s Al Wukair, by
Dream Ahead, impressive winner of the G3 Prix Djebel for M.
Fabre. Eminent, a Frankel colt out of You=ll Be Mine, by
Kingmambo who won the G3 Craven S. at Newmarket on only
his second career start, was 11-2. Frankel already has three
GSW this year, and eight GSW from his first crop.
For Sunday=s G1 English 1000 Guineas, I will have to admit to a
degree of unfamiliarity. Last year=s G1 Fillies Mile winner
Rhododendron, by Galileo, is the 5-2 favorite. All I really know
other than that, is that trainer John Gosden won both fillies=
preps for the same owner Mr. Abdullah Saeed Al Naboodah, the
G3 Nell Gwyn S. by the Acclamation filly Daban, while Dabyah,
from Sepoy=s second crop, won the G3 Fred Darling S. At last
report, Daban was heading to Newmarket, with Dabyah
redirected to France. Contact Bill Oppenheim at
WEEKLY SALES TICKER by Bill Oppenheim
“The OBS April Sale is the Keeneland September of 2-year-old sales, and the results were very encouraging, with the gross up 17% to $61.1-million, and the average up 14%, to $90,245. The clearance rate from the catalogue edged up almost 2%, to 56.1%, though almost a third (391, or 32.4%) of those originally catalogued were withdrawn. In 2014 the gross reached just under $57-million, the percentage withdrawn was 22%, and the percentage sold from the catalogue was 63.8%, which is 7.5% higher than this year. Overall, the North American 2-year-old sales so far are up over $20-million (15%) in gross and 12% in average compared to 2016, though when we go back farther, the withdrawal rate is up by 10 percentage points since 2013, and the percentage sold from the catalogues is down 8.5%. It’s all about how many home runs you can hit.”

Handle, Field Size Up for Spring Meet at Hawthorne:
Despite a rainy April, handle and field size for the recently
concluded spring meet at Hawthorne increased over 2016, the
track announced Tuesday. Daily handle averaged $1,352,173, an
uptick from $1,343,819 in 2016, and field size rose to 7.18
starters per race from 7.03 the previous year.
AThis spring, we showed that we have turned the corner and
are headed in the right direction at Hawthorne,@ said president
and General Manager Tim Carey. AIt=s unfortunate that April had
so much rain, causing us to lose numerous turf races, but the
later post time, improved on-air exposure, and the return of the
Illinois Derby all contributed to a positive meet. Being able to
stabilize our overnight purse structure while returning some
races to the stakes schedule have us well positioned to only
improve in meets going forward.@
Jockey Victor Santiago took home his first riding title by
booting home 30 winners, Scott Becker led all trainers with 25
victories and William Stiritz captured the owner crown, also with
25 winners.
New Vocations= Open Barn and BBQ Hosts 600-Plus:
Over 600 people from the racing and sport horse industries
attended the Apr. 28 New Vocations Open Barn and BBQ,
sponsored by AmWager and Siena Farm. The event was
organized to raise awareness for the importance of
Thoroughbred aftercare, while spotlighting New Vocations=
mission to rehab, retrain and rehome retired racehorses.
AIt was really inspiring to see so many people involved in the
equine industry, from owners and trainers of Thoroughbreds to
equestrians and horse enthusiasts, come to visit our new
facility,@ said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Director. AThe
main thing every person had in common was a mutual respect
and love for the Thoroughbred.@
New Vocations at Mereworth Farm welcomed guests to tour
the nearly complete retraining and adoption facility. The biggest
draw was the retired racehorses that filled the 30 stalls, each of
which was either up for adoption or in training to be put up for
adoption. One of the stalls, housing Mean Booger Bear, was
sponsored by the TDN.
